TRACKING SHOWERS AND STORMS

Storms are already firing up on the First Alert Live Radar this afternoon and will continue through the evening and into the night. Some of these storms will be strong to possible severe, with the main threats being very heavy downpours, gusty winds, hail and lots of thunder and lightning.

Through the evening hours, the storms move out over the Gulf of Mexico as we head into the night. Overnight, we'll stay warm and muggy under mainly cloudy skies with lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

For tomorrow, we'll see mainly cloudy skies. There will be showers and storms popping up again, but it looks like it will be another late day event as an area of low pressure moves in from the Gulf of Mexico. If you have plans early in the day even into the midday time frame, you shouldn't have any problems. The late afternoon and evening plans could be a bit of a mess, though. Expect that some of the storms that pop up could once again be on the strong to severe side and they will likely last into the overnight and even Saturday morning.

Through the day Saturday, we'll dry things out and even get the sunshine to return. Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the lower 80s.

If you are planning to attend sunrise services on Easter Sunday, temperatures will be near 60 degrees. That is rather cool by Southwest Florida standards for this time of year, so you may want the light sweater for that early morning time frame. Then we'll warm to the lower to mid 80s for Easter Sunday afternoon. Return to index of stories...

EVER WONDER IF THE STOCK MARKET TENDS TO PERFORM SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER DURING CERTAIN MONTHS?

NICK CHLUMSKY WITH THE NOLTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP IS WITH US TODAY TO GIVE US THE ANSWER.

NICK - SO IS THAT THE CASE? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

Well, the answer is yes. But the statistics show us that seasonal correlations actually began with a constitutional amendment. For the first third of the twentieth century, there didn't seem to be any correlation between annual market performance for the year and the market performance for the month of January. That all changed with the passage of the amendment to the constitution in 1933.

· The 20th amendment is known as the "Lame Duck" amendment. It was designed to shorten the period of time that members of congress and the president would serve in office after they had failed to be re-elected. The new amendment stipulated that the terms for Congress and the office of the president would begin on January 3rd in the year after elections. Previously, terms began in March.

· Now, in 1972, Yale Hirsch discovered a direct correlation between the performance of the stock market in January and the annual return of the market for that year since the 1030's. And hence, the January Effect was born. Simply stated, if the market does well in January, there's a good chance the market will finish positive for the year. For the record, this January was down, but we'll leave that for another discussion.

· The accuracy of the January Effect has created a new focus on seasonal investing trends. April, historically, is an impressive month. As a matter of fact, for the past 64 years, April, November, and December have been the top performing months of the year.

· April holds number two position with markets positive 68% of the time. For the record, December has been the top performing month delivering returns for investors 75% of the time. Now what can we expect for the balance of this month? Historically, April market performance is prone to weakness after the April 15th tax deadline. In regard to the upcoming Easter Holiday, markets are usually positive moving into Easter Weekend and negative the Monday after. In fact, the day after Easter is the second worst post-holiday for markets.

· The first quarter of this year has been a normal correction, not the beginning of a Bear Market. The S&P 500 is now up three quarters of one percent but some stocks are down 30% or more from their 52 week high. What does this mean? Well after a scary start to the year, there's some real opportunity out there particularly in dividend paying stocks. So for all you income oriented investors out there, we are either at or near a market level that gives us a great bargain shopping opportunity. Return to index of stories...

Rescuers are facing harsh weather conditions as they search for the hundreds of passengers still missing.

The South Korean Coast Guard said that the visibility in the murky waters near the sunken vessel is less than two meters and that fast currents are impeding the professional divers looking for any survivors.

Families of the passengers on board, mostly students on a field trip, are gathering on nearby Jindo Island.

They are outraged with what they call a slow government response after the Sewol sank off the country's southwest coast on its way to the resort island of Jeju.

NUMBERS TELL THE STORY. MORE THAN 5-MILLION PEOPLE VISIT THE HOSPITAL EACH YEAR WITH CHEST PAIN. AND ABOUT 600-THOUSAND PEOPLE DIE EACH YEAR FROM HEART DISEASE. THE CHALLENGE IS TO INTERVENE EARLY.

DR. LARRY HOBBS/EMERGENCY MEDICINE

RUNS:

:20 Heart disease is a number one disease in the American society. So our number one, chief complaint, coming through our doors in the emergency room is chest pain.

AS PART OF THE CHALLENGE TO SPEED TREATMENT, LEE MEMORIAL HEALTHY SYSTEM PUT IN PLACE A PROTOCOL DRIVEN APPROACH TO PATIENT MANAGEMENT. IT REDUCES TIME TO TREATMENT DURING THE EARLY STAGES OF A HEART ATTACK. BEGINNING WITH A CALL TO 911 FOR AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE.

DR. LARRY HOBBS/EMERGENCY MEDICINE

RUNS:

2:04 We added an EKG station so that EMS can transfer the EKG to the Emergency Room prior to the patient getting here. So we can get the cath lab manned and ready to go and have the cardiologist standing by.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

If someone is having a heart attack, they can be quickly taken into surgery to re-open a blocked artery. But other times the cause of their chest pain is unclear. In those instances, patients can now get a speedy assessment.

2-SHOT CINDY & AMY

RUNS:

10:36 For Southwest Florida yes it is a novel program. And we believe it's the best medicine because we're using nationally evidence-based medicine.

THE HEALTH SYSTEM INSTITUTED A CHEST PAIN PROGRAM IN EACH OF ITS HOSPITALS. THEY INCLUDE A WARD OF PATIENT ROOMS WITH TRAINED STAFF WHO CONDUCT THE NECESSARY TESTS.

CINDY BROWN/VP PATIENT CARE SERVICES

RUNS:

4:54: We do what's called point-of-care testing which means we're able to draw your blood and determine whether or not the blood work shows you might have had a heart attack. That used to take about an hour to get the results. We're able to get them now in 15 minutes. So were able to move the patients quickly through the system and quickly to a diagnosis.

GOING BACK TO THE NUMBERS: USING THESE PROTOCOLS, CUTS DIAGNOSTIC TIME IN HALF. SETTING NEW STANDARDS OF CARE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

NATSOT

Barbecue season is just around the corner in Washington DC, where Juan Manuel Rubio and his friends never miss a chance to get together for a cookout.

SOT:

IT'S MY MAIN-- THE STRUCTURE, THE BACKBONE OF MY SOCIAL LIFE.

But from barbecues to butcher shops to restaurants, Americans are facing sticker shock in the form of ballooning beef and bacon prices.

The average retail cost of beef is $5.36 a pound -- up 32 cents since January, and the highest price since 1987.

Texas cattle rancher Jim Guthrie blames the severe drought in the Southwest for reducing cattle herds and pushing up prices.

SOT:

PEOPLE LIQUIDATED THEIR HERDS BECAUSE THEY JUST DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH FEED TO KEEP THEIR COWS.

NATSOT:

-PIGS-

Pork prices are also up, thanks to a virus that's killed millions of pigs in the U.S.

The retail price of bacon has spiked to $5.55 a pound, up 64 cents in a year.

Consumers are feeling the squeeze:

SOT:

YEAH, DEFINITELY LOOKING AT THE PRICE. YOU HAVE TO SAVE MONEY WHEREVER YOU CAN.

Still, some butchers say they're being cautious, and won't raise retail prices too quickly:

SOT:

IF I CHANGE THEM DAILY, CUSTOMERS WILL GET UPSET.

SO IF YOU SEE A TREND BUILDING, THEN YOU ADJUST.

SOT:

I LIKE MY BACON IN THE MORNING. THICK CUT. /COVER EDIT WITH BACON/ EVERYTHING TASTES GOOD WITH BACON. 1/8LAUGHS 3/8

but for those who can't stomach the rising bacon and beef prices, the number one alternative in america is:

COLLEGE SPYING-PKG

CLIP:

"Bond clip."

The FBI is cracking down on espionage… but they're not looking for your typical 007.

"nats."

Just this week -- the Bureau released this 28-minute video -- re-enacting the story of Glenn Duffie Shriver, a former college student from Michigan.

In 2011, Shriver was sentenced to 4 years federal prison for attempting to give classified information to Chinese intelligence officers.

. who wooed him, at first, with seemingly benign jobs while he was studying abroad in Shanghai.

"Who cares, it's just an essay. As long as they pay."

Seventy-thousand dollars later, they encouraged him to apply for work in the CIA.

At the end of the video -- a jailhouse interview with Shriver himself.

"Don't fool yourself. The recruitment is active and the target is young people -- throw lots of money at them and see what happens."

A former U-S intelligence official tells NBC News Chinese officers AGGRESSIVELY target dozens of American students each year.

And, experts say China's not alone -- that Russia and Israel are known to recruit students, too.

"The targeting of students, especially students in the hard sciences, has been a problem for quite a long time."

The video won't win any Academy Awards.

Scenes set in Shanghai were actually shot in Washington, D-C's Chinatown.

. and the dialogue can be cheesy at best.

"It's for emergencies and I think this one qualifies. Awesome!"

College students have mixed options of the FBI's new warnings.

"No offense to the government, but it seems like it's another situation of creating a job for somebody you know- "make a video about college students being spies." Return to index of stories...
