THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A PLEASANT, MOSTLY SUNNY DAY

After a cool start this morning, plenty of sunshine lead the way to a quick warm up this morning. As we continue on through the day, you can expect mostly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 80s. If you are headed to the beaches we could even have a few of those coastal locations hang on the the upper 70s for afternoon highs. Though we will see some clouds, overall, today can be described as mostly sunny. There will be light and variable breezes that turn on shore with the afternoon sea breeze today.

For tonight, you can expect the mild weather to continue with lows dropping into the low to mid 60s by morning.

Through the rest of the week, there are no storm systems headed our way. There will be a continued mix of sun and clouds with periods that have more sun and periods that have more clouds. We are looking at a trend of gradually warming things up and even adding back some humidity be the end of the week. In fact, we'll finish out the week with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Return to index of stories...

THE WORK SEEMS NEVER-ENDING.

IT'S BEEN ONE MONTH SINCE A MOUNTAINSIDE PLUNGED INTO THE TOWN OF OSO, WASHINGTON.

SEARCHER BEN WOODWARD TOOK US RIGHT INTO THE HEART OF THE SLIDE.

Ana: What was here before the landslide?

Ben: Houses, sparse houses, trees.

WE WALKED ALONG WHAT WAS ONCE A HIGHWAY.

THE SURROUNDINGS DON'T EVEN RESEMBLE THE COMMUNITY THAT ONCE FLOURISHED HERE.

YET, THIS IS PROGRESS.

"It was 6 foot under water, or so, right where we are standing."

S/U: "Water and mud still creating the biggest challenges for these search crews. We're told water was above my head when that landslide first hit. What they've had to do is create a water channel with pumps to be able to move the water out of this area just to give search crews access to look here."

SPECIAL MACHINERY, LIKE THIS FLOATING EXCAVATOR, JUST ARRIVED TO HELP SEARCH FOR THE MISSING IN THE OBSTACLE-FILLED WRECKAGE.

S/U: This gives you an idea of what search crews are up against. Logs, mud, piles of debris 20-40 feet high in some places."

THE SLOW, SLOPPY AND DANGEROUS WORK COMES WITH AN EMOTIONAL TOLL. SO FAR, AT LEAST 41 VICTIMS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED IN THE DISASTER ZONE.

A WASHINGTON SPRUCE TREE LEFT STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SLIDE AREA NOW SERVES AS A MAKE-SHIFT MEMORIAL TO HONOR LIVES LOST.

BEN: Absolutely

IN A REFERENDUM IN 2006, 58% OF MICHIGAN VOTERS APPROVED AMENDING THE STATE CONSTITUTION

TO BAN ANY CONSIDERATION OF RACE IN PUBLIC COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND PUBLIC EMPLOYMENT.

THE SIX JUSTICE MAJORITY UPHELD THAT PROCESS.

JUSTICE ANTHONY KENNEDY WRITING

Kennedy:

"This case is not about how the debate about racial preferences should be resolved. It is about who may resolve it,"

THIS CASE IS NOT ABOUT HOW THE DEBATE ABOUT RACIAL PREFERENCES SHOULD BE RESOLVED. IT IS ABOUT WHO MAY RESOLVE IT.

THE COURT DID NOT RULE ON THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION BUT OPPONENTS ARE STILL CELEBRATING

"Well, we live in a time with a black president and black attorney general.

When, to make the kind of claim that people are being discriminated against -

to be prevented from entering into positions in universities or a job at a hospitals

or a public employment project - simply no longer makes sense."

THE NAACP SAYS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS STILL NEEDED

"Segregation and racial inequality exist throughout this country. In housing.

We see it in employment. We see it in schools and so that is something that must be addressed."

JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR AGREED, SAYING JUDGES OUGHT NOT SIT BACK AND WISH AWAY RACIAL INEQUALITY. AND SHE SAID OF THE MICHIGAN REFERENDUM

ONE OF THE FIRST 'MOM' DECISIONS ELYSE PICKETT MADE CAME LONG BEFORE BABY MCKENNA'S BIRTH.

ELYSE PICKETT/FIRST-TIME MOM

RUNS: 06

:37 Absolutely. I, I knew I wanted to breastfeed the moment I found out I was pregnant.

GOING ALL-NATURAL IS SOMETIMES A BUMPY ROAD- IT WAS FOR ELYSE.

ELYSE PICKETT/FIRST-TIME MOM

RUNS:

1:25 We actually had a bit of a struggle right off the bat, you know some moms do. We actually had a medical condition that she had to get corrected in order for us to get going.

The notion of new moMS easily and comfortably breast-feeding is challenged by research that indicates nursing problems are a near-universal experience among first-timers.

CAROL LAWRENCE/PhD CLINICAL COORDINATOR

RUNS:

1:15 Sometimes breastfeeding comes very easily to the new mom and baby. But sometimes it's a learned process.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Beginning right here in the hospital room, moms are given the support they need to breastfeed. Should any issues arise, help is just steps away.

CAROL LAWRENCE/PhD CLINICAL COORDINATOR

RUNS:

2:31 The first line of support is our certified breastfeeding counselor. Which are mom-baby nurses that have received a certification in breastfeeding. They're at the bedside 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

INTERVENING EARLY AND OFTEN IS KEY AT THIS CRITICAL STAGE. STUDIES SHOW MOMS WHO REPORT PROBLEMS ARE nearly 10 times more likely to abandon breast-feeding within two months.

ELYSE PICKETT/FIRST-TIME MOM

RUNS:

4:50 After we overcame our initial issues it's become a routine. Whenever she needs to eat, she lets me know.

FORECAST-WXWALL

STOWAWAY UPDATE-O ANIBOX

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STORY OF THAT STOWAWAY WHO CLIMBED INTO A PLANE'S WHEEL WELL AND SURVIVED A FLIGHT FROM CALIFORNIA TO HAWAII.

BRIAN ROSS SHOWS US HOW THE TEEN MANAGED TO BEAT THE ODDS, AND SURVIVE THE HARROWING TRIP. Return to index of stories...

STOWAWAY UPDATE-PKG

THE GROUND CREW NOTICED HIM WANDERING THE TARMAC IN MAUI. DISORIENTED.

F-B-I SPECIAL AGENT TOM SIMON SAYS THIS 16-YEAR-OLD BOY CLAIMED TO HAVE RIDDEN TO MAUI IN THE WHEEL-WELL OF A HAWAIIAN AIRLINES 767 ALL THE WAY FROM SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.

THE AIRPORT SPOKESWOMAN IN SAN JOSE SAYS:

"He's a very lucky boy today."

OFFICIALS HAVE REVIEWED SURVEILLANCE VIDEO-AND SAY THE TEENAGER WAS SEEN HOPPING THE FENCE AT THE SAN JOSE AIRPORT-- AND WALKING ACROSS THE TARMAC, TOWARD THE HAWAIIAN AIRLINES PLANE.

THE MAUI AIRPORT HAS FOOTAGE OF HIM CRAWLING OUT OF A WHEEL-WELL.

WE WENT INTO THE WHEEL-WELL OF A 707-- SMALLER THAN THE 767'S WHEEL BAY.

BUT SECURITY EXPERT RAFI RON WAS ABLE TO SHOW US HOW HE COULD'VE WEDGED IN.

BT: "In the wheel-well, this center area here could be key, right?"

RR: "Yeah- with the setup that we have here in the 707, this area here is probably the best location for him at this time- because that is where the space between the wheels would later on be positioned and that ensures that there will be slightly enough space for him to survive, and then he can improve his position once the gear is in."

EXPERTS SAY IF HE DID SUCCESSFULLY STOW-AWAY, IT'S ALMOST MIRACULOUS.

THE WHEEL-WELLS OF PASSENGER JETS AREN'T HEATED OR PRESSURIZED, THEY SAY.

AT A CRUISING ALTITUDE OF 30-TO 38-THOUSAND FEET, THE COLD AIR COULD HAVE KILLED HIM.

"At that height, you've got temperatures of around minus-45 to minus-55 degrees 'C.' Just to put that into perspective, skin freezes almost instantaneously at around minus-44 degrees 'C'."

A LOSS OF OXYGEN AT THAT ALTITUDE COULD HAVE KILLED HIM, UNLESS HIS METABOLISM SLOWED ENOUGH FOR HIM NOT TO NEED MUCH OXYGEN.

THE LACK OF SECURITY IN SAN JOSE IS ALSO BEING QUESTIONED IN THIS CASE.

RAFI RON SAYS THE BOY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A GAP IN THE SYSTEM.

"Right now, many of our airports are not protecting the perimeter well enough to prevent an incident like this one."

THE AIRPORT SPOKESWOMAN IN SAN JOSE SAYS THAT FACILITY EXCEEDS ALL SECURITY REQUIREMENTS AND HAS AN EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD.

THE T-S-A IS ASSISTING THE AIRPORT IN ITS INVESTIGATION. Return to index of stories...
