FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Hot and humid days"

Over the weekend temperatures managed to soar into the lower 90s across Southwest Florida. In fact, Page Field recorded 91° on thermometer both Saturday and Sunday. The summer-like heat will continue, with increasing rain prospects by mid to late week.

Now that the winds have turned onshore, temperatures will stay slightly cooler along our beaches and coastal areas with readings in the middle 80s. Expect daytime highs to climb near 90° in town, while inland communities top out one or two degrees above that. As the seabreeze moves inland, a few spotty showers will be possible mainly east of the interstate as we close out the afternoon.

A very slight shower chance will continue through the evening hours, and temperatures will begin to settle into the lower 80s by sunset. Due to the extra humidity, temperatures will be slow to fall overnight as they bottom out in the upper 60s to lower 70s area wide.

With high pressure to our east, a southerly flow will continue to pump in heat and moisture. Expect partly sunny skies for Tuesday with a few showers deep inland. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm in the upper 80s to lower 90s. We'll keep late day showers in the forecast through Wednesday, with higher rain chances Thursday through Saturday as a cold front approaches the Florida peninsula. Return to index of stories...

:30 Running is basically something that can give you a lot of exercise. Help your body grow. Strengthen your bones. You don't need a lot of equipment.

HE SHOULD KNOW- RICK SNYDERMAN HAS BEEN OUTFITTING RUNNERS IN FORT MYERS FOR DECADES. NOW DOCTORS ARE GETTING ON THE BANDWAGON- TRYING TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET MOVING. ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS ARE MOUNTING A CAMPAIGN- AIMED AT LAZY BONES.

DR. DAVID EICHTEN/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

1:21 It's important for people to know that their bone is alive, it's constantly being remodeled and it's important for exercise and weight-bearing activity so that your bones aren't soft.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Up until your mid-20s, your body is accumulating bone mass- actually developing bone. After that it starts declining. In women the decline speeds up after menopause. But setting an active pace keeps your bones strong. Experts believe you set yourself up for success later in life by building bone mass when you're young.

DR. DAVID EICHTEN/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

2:17 Your bone responds to stress. So when there's stress on the bones that's when you get an increase in bone density. So any weight-bearing activity is going to be very good for your bones.

ANY EXERCISE IS GOOD. WEIGHT LIFTING INCREASES BONE MASS- AND RUNNING DOES TOO. WITH ALL OF YOUR BODY WEIGHT PRESSING DOWNWARD WITH EACH STRIDE.

RICK SNYDERMAN/SNYDERMAN SHOES

RUNS:

3:02 Absolutely. You're putting tremendous pressure on your feet.

DR. DAVID EICHTEN/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

BREAST CANCER-ONCAM

THE EFFECTS OF A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS MAY CONTINUE LONG AFTER TREATMENT ENDS.

TODAY NBC2 IS UNCOVERING NEW STARTLING FINDINGS.

ERIKA EDWARDS EXPOSES THE REASONS. Return to index of stories...

BREAST CANCER-PKG

"This is my miter saw."

KRIS SNOW IS LOOKING AT THE REMNANTS OF WHAT USED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL HOME REMODELING BUSINESS.

SHE HAD TO STOP WORKING AFTER CHEMOTHERAPY TO TREAT BREAST CANCER IN 2011. LEFT HER WITH EXTREME FATIGUE AND NERVE DAMAGE.

THREE YEARS LATER -- SHE IS STILL UNABLE TO LIFT AND USE HER TOOLS EFFECTIVELY.

"I basically have lost my business because you can't tell someone, 'oh I'll remodel your bathroom for you, but I'm not sure when I can get it done.'"

A NEW STUDY OF EARLY-STAGE BREAST CANCER PATIENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN FINDS ONE THIRD WHO ARE TREATED WITH CHEMOTHERAPY ARE OUT OF WORK FOUR YEARS LATER.

MANY MISSED TOO MUCH WORK. OTHERS DEVELOPED WHAT'S CALLED "CHEMO BRAIN" -- A MENTAL FOGGINESS OFTEN LINKED WITH CHEMOTHERAPY.

"A lot of patients tell me that they may have jobs where they were multitasking quite a bit and now they're trying to find new ways to organize themselves."

DOCTORS ARE NOT SUGGESTING PATIENTS AVOID CHEMOTHERAPY -- THE PRIORITY IS A CURE.

BUT LONG-TERM EFFECTS ARE IMPORTANT TO ADDRESS.

"We may have to spend extra time, either the physicians the nurses or the social workers, spending time informing their employers of what to expect."

DOCTORS DECLARED KRIS CANCER-FREE. AND SHE EXPECTED TO GO BACK TO WORK.

INSTEAD. SHE'S ON DISABILITY.

"I can see progress, but it's really hard to be patient and not be back."

THE TOOLS USED TO SAVE HER LIFE. MAY HAVE ENDED HER CAREER.
