THIS IS A STORY FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID.

JACKSON, Miss. - Authorities say a large tornado has damaged homes and down trees and power lines around the northern Mississippi city of Tupelo.

Don Lewis, chief operations officer for the city, says there were no immediate reports of injuries. He says damages have been reported in several neighborhoods north of the city and emergency crews have spread out to aid residents with recovery.

Areas of western Tupelo also reported some homes damaged and downed trees when the tornado moved past. Forecasters say the tornado sprang for a severe storm front sweeping across the northern part of the state.

Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency Monday in advance of expected storms that forecasters have warned could trigger tornadoes, heavy downpours, damaging hail and flash floods. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Hot and humid days"

Over the weekend temperatures managed to soar into the lower 90s across Southwest Florida. In fact, Page Field recorded 91° on thermometer both Saturday and Sunday. The summer-like heat will continue, with increasing rain prospects by mid to late week.

Now that the winds have turned onshore, temperatures will stay slightly cooler along our beaches and coastal areas with readings in the middle 80s. Expect daytime highs to climb near 90° in town, while inland communities top out one or two degrees above that. As the seabreeze moves inland, a few spotty showers will be possible mainly east of the interstate as we close out the afternoon.

A very slight shower chance will continue through the evening hours, and temperatures will begin to settle into the lower 80s by sunset. Due to the extra humidity, temperatures will be slow to fall overnight as they bottom out in the upper 60s to lower 70s area wide.

With high pressure to our east, a southerly flow will continue to pump in heat and moisture. Expect partly sunny skies for Tuesday with a few showers deep inland. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm in the upper 80s to lower 90s. We'll keep late day showers in the forecast through Wednesday, with higher rain chances Thursday through Saturday as a cold front approaches the Florida peninsula. Return to index of stories...

JIM HARDING THOUGHT HE WAS HEADING OUT FOR A REGULAR SUNDAY FISHING TRIP AT THE BURNT STORE MARINA.

BUT IT'S NOT THE MANATEES OR THE TARPON HE'LL REMEMBER.

SOT

JIM HARDING

57:12 - 57:20

It was a really colorful plane. It looked like a big lure in the water. Haha.because we had our fishing boats, that's what I thought of

SOT

CAPT. NICK SANGUEDOLCE

I looked over, and the boat was just sitting there, half submerged

CAPTAIN NICK SANGUEDOLCE WITH TOW-BOAT U-S WAS THE ONE WHO HELPED GET THE BOAT BACK TO SOLID GROUND.

EARLIER TODAY -- HE TOOK US TWO MILES OUT FROM THE MARINA TO SHOW US WHERE THE PLANE LANDED.

We got right next to it. We anchored out boat. We dropped our pumps in. Got the flotation ready.

10:38 - 10:53

This is the area where that rescue mission took place. CApt. Nick said it took about four hours b/c they actually had to drain some of the water off the plane first and then tow it two miles to the BS Marina. But there was one thing that made the whole thing just a little bit easier

SOT

CAPT. NICK

8:05 - 8:15

Any time we can do anything like that and stand on the ground it's always a lot easier than trying to tow the thing upside down or drag it through the water

FIRST RESPONDERS TOLD US THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THE CRASH WITHOUT GETTING HURT.

NBC2 CONTINUES TO EXPOSE NEW INFORMATION ABOUT ALLEGATIONS OF WRONGDOING INSIDE THE CHARLOTTE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION.

NEW TONIGHT -- A CALL FOR HELP FROM INSIDE THE PRISON ON THE NIGHT A PRISONER WAS FOUND DEAD.

CCI 911 CALLS-PKG

Dispatcher "911 where's your emergency?"

Caller "Yes, hi, this is Charlotte Correctional Institution."

A CALL TO 911 JUST BEFORE 1 A.M. THE MORNING OF APRIL 11TH --

Caller "We have an emergency here."

Dispatcher "What's going on?"

Caller "There was an assault on. on staff."

--SOMETHING IS WRONG INSIDE THE CHARLOTTE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION.

THE CALL PAINTS A CLEAR PICTURE THAT A PHYSICAL STRUGGLE BETWEEN MORE THAN JUST TWO PEOPLE OCCURRED.

THE CALLER CLAIMS TO HAVE LIMITED INFORMATION ABOUT A VIOLENT INCIDENT INSIDE ONE OF THE PRISON'S DORMS.

Caller "I don't know all of the information because I'm in the control room and they're handling it out on the compound. I was just advised to call 911."

Caller "Two people are hurting and I think the inmate hurt too. I'm. I'm not exactly sure."

WHAT WASN'T REPORTED TO THE 911 DISPATCHER WAS THAT THE INMATE - MATTHEW WALKER - WAS EITHER MAIMED OR ALREADY DEAD, ACCORDING TO OUR SOURCES.

Caller "Two staff members were down. I don't know what's going on with the inmate"

SOURCES TELL ME LT. TYLER TRIPLETT, WHO WAS FIRED LAST WEEK FROM CCI, WAS PERFORMING CELL CHECKS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT - CHECKS THAT ARE *ALWAYS* SUPPOSED TO BE RECORDED DOWN TO THE MINUTE FOR THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.

IF THAT WAS PERFORMED PROPERLY, INVESTIGATORS WOULD HAVE AN IDEA OF WHEN AN ALTERCATION OCCURRED AND COMPARE THAT TO THE TIME OFF THE 911 CALL TO THE TIME OF DEATH FROM WALKER'S AUTOPSY REPORT. DETAILS THAT HAVE YET TO BE RELEASED.

EVEN THEN, THERE COULD BE HOLES IN THE INVESTIGATION - DEPUTIES NEVER ARRIVED TO WRITE UP AN INCIDENT REPORT.

"Dispatcher "You need deputies also I'm taking it?"

Caller "Ah. I don't. I don't know. I don't know. pretty sure just an ambulance."

Dispatcher "You just want ambulance for now?"

Caller "Yeah"

OFFICERS ARE ACCUSED OF HANDCUFFING WALKER AND BEATING HIM TO DEATH, SOURCES TELL US, BECAUSE HE WOULDN'T PUT PERSONAL ITEMS AWAY IN HIS CELL.

… AND NEARLY THREE WEEKS AFTER THESE ALLEGATIONS SURFACED, THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS STILL WON'T ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER ANY OTHER OFFICERS HAVE BEEN FIRED OR ARE ON LEAVE AFTER THIS INCIDENT.
