FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A FEW STORMS TODAY"

The summer-like heat won't stop across Southwest Florida. Yesterday we officially topped out at 92° and while this isn't one for the record books, it's still about 5° above average. The trend of hot and humid days will continue before relief comes in the form of scattered rain by late in the week.

A good amount of sunshine will prevail through the late morning hours, allowing temperatures to climb quickly into the middle to upper 80s by noon. During the afternoon expect partly sunny skies to take over along with a southerly wind. This will continue to pump in more heat and moisture across the area. This combined with the seabreeze will allow for a few downpours and storms to develop along and east of the interstate. Daytime highs will eventually top out in the lower to middle 90s, with cooler readings at our beaches and coastal locations.

A very slight shower chance will continue through the evening hours, and temperatures will begin to settle into the lower 80s by sunset. Due to the extra humidity, temperatures will be slow to fall overnight as they bottom out in the lower 70s.

A slow moving storm system that continues to kick off rounds of severe weather across the south, will push itself down the Florida peninsula in a much weakened state. This will bring us a slight uptick to our rain prospects beginning Friday. As this front drapes itself across the southern half of the state, expect more clouds than sun Friday and Saturday with scattered rain and a few storms. Skies will turn a bit sunnier by late Sunday with drier weather building over the state. Return to index of stories...

Lockett was set to be executed using a NEW EXPERIMENTAL cocktail of three drugs.

The execution began at 6:23pm, when prison officials administered the first drug, a sedative, to Lockett.

SOT:

IT WAS DETERMINED THAT HE WAS SEDATED APPROXIMATELY 7 MINUTES INTO THE EXECUTION. AT THAT TIME, WE BEGAN PUSHING THE SECOND AND THIRD DRUGS IN THE PROTOCOL. THERE WERE SOME CONCERN AT THAT TIME THAT THE DRUG WAS NOT HAVING AN EFFECT.

Courtney Francisco of NBC station K-F-O-R, witnessing the execution along with other reporters, said prison officials declared Lockett unconscious at 6:33pm.

But over the next six minutes, eyewitnesses said Lockett still appeared conscious -- and was struggling:

SOT:

ONE OF THE THINGS HE SAID IS "SOMETHING'S WRONG," HE SAID "MAN" AT ONE POINT. HE KEPT TRYING TO RAISE UP.

Then, eyewitnesses said prison officials closed off their window into the chamber -- putting Lockett's execution on hold.

SOT:

IT SOUNDS AS IF THE VEIN STOPPED WORKING AFTER THE FIRST DRUG WAS GIVEN, SO THE PARALYSIS AND THE MEDICATION TO STOP THE HEART-- THEY JUST NEVER WORKED.

Prison officials said Lockett suffered a massive heart attack and died at 7:06pm.

Lockett's lawyer - WHO INITIALLY SUED THE STATE FOR REFUSING TO DISCLOSE DETAILS ABOUT THE EXECUTION DRUGS - said prison officials are to blame:

SOT:

THEY WANTED TO HURRY UP AND GET IT DONE WITH AS LITTLE TRANSPARENCY AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS WHAT THEY GET.

In a statement, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin called for "a full review of Oklahoma's execution procedures" and ordered the execution of a second death row inmate, Charles Warner, to be delayed for 14 days.

.HELD BY AMANDA KNOX AND HER THEN BOYFRIEND RAFFAELLE SOLLECITO.

THE 337 PAGE COURT DOCUMENT SAYS.

MEREDITH KERCHER "was overpowered by a number of aggressors and simultaneously stabbed with the blades of different knives."

SOLLECITO'S LAWYER REJECTED THAT CLAIM.

.NO WAY SHE SAID OUTSIDE COURT.

BUT ON THE MURDER ITSELF. THE JUDGES SAY. THE EVIDENCE.

".leads us to believe. Amanda Marie Knox lashed the deadly wound to the throat of Meredith"

BUT AMANDA KNOX - IN HER STATEMENT - SAYS EXPERTS AGREED THAT HER DNA WAS NOT FOUND ANYWHERE IN MEREDITH'S ROOM, WHILE THE DNA OF RUDY GUEDE WAS DISCOVERED.

HE IS ALREADY SERVING A PRISON SENTENCE FOR MEREDITH'S MURDER

ON THE MOTIVE THE COURT FOUND THERE HAD BEEN.***

"heating up of an argument between Amanda and the English student" INVOLVING "increasing aggressiveness"

ON A PRIOR CLAIM THAT AT THE HOUSE IN PERUGIA A SEX GAME HAD GONE WRONG.

"It is not plausible to believe", THE JUDGES SAID, "that group sexual activity had begun among the foursome"

AMANDA KNOX WAS CONVICTED IN 2007. SENTENCED TO 28 YEARS. BUT WON AN APPEAL IN 2011

NOW SHE FACES ANOTHER BATTLE TO CLEAR HER NAME.

"Now if she loses her appeal then Italy could file an extradition request with the State Department demanding she is sent back from Seattle to that country, but there is a lot of legal argument ahead before that possibility. Back to you." Return to index of stories...

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS-ONCAM

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION HAS DECLARED ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE A MAJOR GLOBAL HEALTH THREAT.

WHILE ANTIBIOTICS SAVE LIVES, OVERUSE HAS LED TO BACTERIA THAT CAN WITHSTAND EVEN LAST-RESORT DRUGS.

ERIKA EDWARDS BRINGS US THE WARNING. Return to index of stories...

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS-PKG

DOCTORS RELY ON ANTIBIOTICS TO DESTROY THE BACTERIA THAT MAKE PATIENTS SICK -- EVERYTHING FROM EAR INFECTIONS IN KIDS TO LIFE-THREATENING BLOODSTREAM INFECTIONS.

HERE'S THE CAVEAT:

"The more we use antibiotics, the more resistant the bacteria become."

AMONG THE MOST URGENT THREAT IN THIS COUNTRY IS C-R-E -- ALSO KNOWN AS "NIGHTMARE BACTERIA."

IT'S FOUND PRIMARILY IN HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS -- WHO'VE ALREADY RECEIVED ANTIBIOTICS TO TREAT OTHER INFECTIONS.

"The danger now is that these resistant bacteria which are in hospitals, especially in intensive care units, will begin to spread to other patients in the hospital and even outside the hospital."

THAT HAPPENED WITH ANOTHER BACTERIA CALLED MRSA -- ORIGINALLY ONLY FOUND IN HOSPITALS -- NOW COMMON IN THE COMMUNITY -- AND CAN BE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL.

EXPERTS SAY DOCTORS NEED TO PRESCRIBE ANTIBIOTICS CAUTIOUSLY. AND PATIENTS HAVE A DUTY TO TAKE THEM AS DIRECTED.

THAT MEANS FINISHING THE ENTIRE COURSE OF MEDICATION EVEN IF YOU FEEL BETTER -- BECAUSE IT HELPS ENSURE ALL OF THE BACTERIA ARE KILLED.

"If there's a few bacteria hanging around, those are the ones that begin to become resistant if the antibiotics are stopped too early."

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION HAS NOW DECLARED ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE AN IMMEDIATE, GLOBAL HEALTH THREAT.

OTHER BACTERIA THAT HAVE EMERGED AS RESISTANT INCLUDE SALMONELLA AND THE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE, GONORRHEA.

AN INFECTION THAT LEFT UNTREATED CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS, INCLUDING INFERTILITY.
