TWO INMATES HAVE BEEN KILLED IN AN GAS EXPLOSION AT AN ESCAMBIA PRISON IN PENSACOLA.

AUTHORITIES SAY ABOUT 600 PRISONERS WERE IN THE BUILDING AT THE TIME AND MORE THAN 100 INMATES AND CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WERE INJURED.

WE'RE LEARNING THAT UNINJURED INMATES ARE BEING MOVED TO OTHER DETENTION FACILITES IN ESCAMBIA AND NEIGHBORING SANTA ROSA COUNTY.

THERE'S NO WORD IF THE ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY THE WEEK'S HEAVY STORMS, WHICH DID FLOOD PORTIONS OF THE JAIL.

OFFICIALS SAY AROUND 11 P.M. A GAS EXPLOSION ROCKED THE CENTRAL BOOKING FACILITY OF THE ESCAMBIA COUNTY JAIL IN PENSACOLA.

"It caused a partial building collapse, and we did have somewhere over 100 injuries, both inmates and corrections officers."

ESCAMBIA COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY THEY'RE STILL INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION, BUT THE BUILDING DID RECEIVE RECENT DAMAGE FROM THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.

"The building did receive extensive flooding as a result of the rains. I don't know if that's directly related to the incident that happened this evening or not. We'll be doing an investigation to determine that."

IN THE MEANTIME, HUNDREDS OF CONCERNED FAMILY MEMBERS GATHERED AROUND THE SCENE TO FIND OUT THE CONDITIONS OF THEIR LOVED ONES.

THEY SAY THEY'RE UNHAPPY WITH THE LACK OF INFORMATION THEY'VE BEEN GIVEN.

"Where is our family members? I mean, no one's telling us nothing. We don't know if they're dead or alive. It's very frustrating. I can't sleep not knowing if my child's okay. I have other family members in there, we don't know if they're okay either." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's setting up to be yet another warm and humid afternoon across Southwest Florida, with highs again climbing into the low 90s.

Showers and storms once again will push across parts of the area today, with the best chance for storms along and east of I-75.

The storms will again move in a northeasterly fashion and should gradually diminish later this evening.

For tonight, skies will stay partly to mostly cloudy with lots of humidity in place. There will even be a few showers and storms lingering late into the evening. Lows will again be in the lower 70s.

For Friday, there will be plenty of heat and humidity as afternoon highs reach into the upper 80s. More moisture in the atmosphere will lead to more scattered showers and storms and they will get started around midday to early afternoon.

A storm system on the way Saturday brings more showers and storms across the area through the day. By Sunday, drier air will be moving in and more sunshine will return by the afternoon with lower humidity. Highs will be in the upper 80s through the weekend.

Through the middle of next week, the pattern looks pretty quiet. Highs will stay in the upper 80s under mostly sunny skies. Return to index of stories...

BALTIMORE STREET COLLAPSE-INTRO

NEW DEVELOPMENTS THIS MORNING.

AFTER TWO DAYS OF HEAVY RAIN, A BLOCK-LONG PORTION OF A BALTIMORE STREET COLLAPSED, SWALLOWING MULTIPLE CARS.

KIM DACEY REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BALTIMORE STREET COLLAPSE-PKG

Sharon Zitzer:

"I'm just overwhelmed, overwhelmed."

CONFUSION AND FRUSTRATION ALONG 26TH STREET IN CHARLES VILLAGE. SHARON ZITZER IS ONE OF THE RESIDENTS WHO CAME HOME TO *THIS*. THE STREET ACROSS FROM HER HOME COLLAPSED UNDER WEDNESDAY'S HEAVY RAINS. TAKING MULTIPLE CARS WITH IT. SHARON THOUGHT HER HUSBAND'S CAR MIGHT BE ONE OF THEM.

Jeremiah McNair:

"The whole room shook a couple things fell in my room and when I came out all the cars was down."

/

"The cars just kept falling about three more cars kept falling all the rubble down there."

RESIDENTS FELT AND HEARD THE COLLAPSE. THEN CAME OUTSIDE AND SAW THE DESTRUCTION. EMERGENCY CREWS QUICKLY ROPED OF THE AREA. AND EVACUATED THE HOMES NEARBY AS A PRECAUTION. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT.

Balil McAllister:

"At least 30 minutes before that happened I was walking on that sidewalk so its just anything could happen."

WHILE THE SCENE ITSELF IS SHOCKING. MANY RESIDENTS SAY THEY'RE NOT ENTIRELY SURPRISED. THEY SAY THEY'VE KNOWN THAT ROAD HAS HAD STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS FOR YEARS. IN FACT. WBAL DID A STORY CHRONICLING THE HISTORY OF THE ROADS PROBLEMS BACK IN 1998.

Mark Truelove:

"We've been expecting this for a long time we've been patching it up putting asphalt on it to make it look good then it washes away and gets another three inch crack in it a matter of six months so this hill has been sliding for a decade."

Sharon Zitzer:

"It was expected because we've reported this over the last couple of years and we were told it was structurally sound they've patched it up and let it at that so we've been expecting it."

AS FOR SHARON ZITZER. ONE BRIGHT SPOT IN HER NIGHT. SHE FOUND HER HUSBAND'S CAR PARKED ON ANOTHER STREET.

Sharon Zitzer:

"Yes car is safe now I gotta find my poor husband." Return to index of stories...

RENT OR BUY-INTRO

AS THE HOUSING MARKET CONTINUES ITS RECOVERY, MANY CONSUMERS ARE FACED WITH THE QUESTION: SHOULD I CONTINUE TO RENT, OR IS IT TIME TO BUY?

A NEW SURVEY FINDS IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU'RE LOOKING.

KARIN CAIFA HAS DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

RENT OR BUY-PKG

MORTGAGE RATES HAVE REMAINED LOW, RENTS HAVE BEEN CREEPING UPWARD, AND MANY MAY BE WONDERING - SHOULD I CONTINUE RENTING, OR SHOULD I BUY A HOME?

A NEW ANALYSIS BY REAL ESTATE WEBSITE ZILLOW, SAYS IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU'RE LOOKING. IN ABOUT HALF OF MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS SURVEYED, BUYING BECOMES THE BETTER OPTION AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS, AS OWNERS BREAK EVEN ON THEIR INVESTMENT.

AMONG THE MARKETS WHERE OWNERS BROKE EVEN MORE QUICKLY - RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, ORLANDO, TAMPA, AND MIAMI-FORT LAUDERDALE, ALL MORE OR LESS, ONE YEAR.

BUT AMONG THOSE WITH THE LONGEST TIME TO BREAK EVEN - WASHINGTON, D-C, BOSTON, PHOENIX AND SAN DIEGO, ALL THREE YEARS OR MORE.

DESPITE POSITIVE SIGNS IN CERTAIN MARKETS, BUYING ISN'T FOR EVERYONE JUST YET, AND ZILLOW SAYS BREAKING EVEN IS JUST ONE FACTOR TO CONSIDER.

BEFORE MAKING THE LEAP TO OWNING A HOME, RENTERS SHOULD TAKE CERTAIN EXTRA COSTS INTO CONSIDERATION IN ADDITION TO WHAT THEY'LL PAY FOR THEIR MORTGAGE EACH MONTH.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEIR DOWN PAYMENT. ALSO, CLOSING COSTS, INSURANCE, TAXES, AND UTILITY AND MAINTENANCE COSTS THAT MAY BE PAID BY A RENTER'S LANDLORD NOW.

ALSO CONSIDER FUTURE NEEDS, LIKE WHETHER YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR HOUSING NEEDS WILL EXPAND WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

FOR CONSUMER WATCH, I'M KARIN CAIFA. Return to index of stories...

ROTTING WHALE STINKS TOWN-PKG

TAKE THE LARGEST ANIMAL ON EARTH --

ADD IN MORE THAN A WEEK'S WORTH OF ROT -

AND THE FRESH SEA AIR - BECOMES PRETTY FOUL.

Well, its getting worse now. its really getting, everyday. if the weather warmed up, it'd be really bad. its okay as long as it's cold like this.

HEAVY ICE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE KILLED A GROUP OF WHALES OFF NEWFOUNDLAND'S WEST COAST.

THIS IS LIKELY ONE OF THEM.

GAWKERS MAY BE FLOCKING TO SEE THIS 25 METER LONG BLOATED BEHEMOTH NOW -- BUT THEY'RE NOT LINGERING LONG -- A BIG CONCERN FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES - THAT RELY ON THE TOURIST TRADE:

The smell of it right now, and the gradual rotting of the whale, is going to cause havoc on the community. health wise, as well as for tourism. right now, we have a stream of traffic coming to see the whale, and we would like that to develop further, into, what can we do with this whale, for future tourism?

DAVID HAYASHIDA HELPED INSTALL A HUMPBACK WHALE SKELETON IN HIS TOWN OF KING'S POINT.

HERE - HE SEES A POTENTIAL ATTRACTION - GOING TO WASTE.

It mystifies me, it really does. its such a tragedy, and it's a double tragedy when something like this is just going to be thrown away.

BUT IT'S NOT SO SIMPLE TO SAVE THE SKELETON.

THERE'S ANOTHER ROTTING BLUE WHALE IN THE NEARBY TOWN OF ROCKY HARBOR - JUST NORTHWEST OF HERE.

IN BOTH CASES - THE FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS SAY - IT'S ENTIRELY UP TO THE TOWNS TO CLEAN UP THE CARCASSES.

It could possibly weigh up to 180 tons. the section that's blowing up is probably about 8 feet high. you know, we've never had to deal with a situation like this, its very unusual.and i really don't believe we have the resources, in terms of removing it. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!
