APPROXIMATELY TEN THOUSAND BABY BOOMERS WILL BE RETIRING EVERY DAY FOR THE NEXT 18 TO 20 YEARS.

NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE FROM THE NOLTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP TO TALK ABOUT JUST HOW IMPORTANT THE YEARS IMMEDIATELY BEFORE AND AFTER RETIRING ARE - IN GETTING YOUR RETIREMENT *RIGHT.

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· That's a whole lot of retirees. In fact, it adds up to about 75 million people that will be leaving the workforce and beginning the next chapter of their lives. These are the years that will offer the possibility to pursue long-awaited opportunities and new experiences. However, many of you nearing retirement will experience an increased sense of anxiety and worry not knowing for sure if you will be able to maintain your current lifestyle and do the things you hoped to do in retirement.

· So if you are nearing retirement or just entered into your golden years, it's important to understand just how critical the few years surrounding your retirement date is in determining your retirement potential. These are the years when a well-thought-out plan matters most. And that plan should address the following types of risk.

· First, let's talk about market volatility and sequence-of-returns risk. In most cases, your nest egg will be at its greatest value in the first few years of your retirement and therefore at heightened risk. This elevated potential risk is often referred to as sequence-of-returns risk which involves the order in which investment returns occur and their impact on your portfolio's value. Because it's not only what the market does that counts, but when. A bad correction in the markets or an unexpected large expense in the early stages of your retirement can significantly reduce the amount of income you will be able to generate over your lifetime.

· Second, there's something called longevity risk, or the risk of outliving your income or assets. Now, running out of money at any age is not a good thing. But running out of money in your 70's or 80's is a nightmare. A well thought out retirement income plan should include a well allocated and diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds to generate current income but you should also consider insuring a portion of your retirement assets to create a guaranteed stream of lifetime income to cover essential expenses.

· Another risk which may not have a dramatic effect in the first few years of your retirement but can have a significant impact on your portfolio and purchasing power over a longer period of time is inflation. Inflation simply put is when the value of your money falls and therefore your purchasing power falls. It's important that your retirement plan address this risk by including securities in a portion of your portfolio like stocks, real estate, and commodities that can outpace inflation over time to at least maintain your purchasing power.

· Make sure you are working with an advisor that can build a retirement income plan that not only considers what is happening now, but also reflects on what is likely to happen next, and most important what may happen later. A well-thought-out plan that addresses the kinds of risks we talked about today will increase the likelihood of you getting to and through retirement successfully. Return to index of stories...

I'd make them spell every word five times and then use it in a sentence, you know, at home. And they're like, "We-- we don't even do this at school." I said I don't care. you're gonna do it here"

ANDERSON SAYS HE REHABILITATED HIMSELF. BUT THE STATE STILL THINKS HE OWES THEM 13 YEARS.

This is a highly unusual case.

MICHAEL WOLFF is A FORMER MISSOURI SUPREME COURT JUSTICE

The state still takes the position that look we have a judgment we are entitled to have this guy serve a sentence. How long a sentence? That's the question.

THE MISSOURI ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE WROTE IN COURT FILINGS THAT MIKE ANDERSON "TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A SITUATION HE COULD HAVE EASILY CORRECTED."

KATE SNOW:

Why should you not have to serve out 13 years?

MIKE ANDERSON:

I shouldn't have to serve it out now because I-- I feel the last 14 years of my life speak for itself. It shows that I'm not that person who they said it was. And for-- me being' incarcerated for 13 years / I wouldn't have turned out to be the man that I am now.

HE MISSES HIS KIDS.

MIKE: I worry about them every day.

KATE SNOW:

I see sadness in your eyes.

MIKE ANDERSON:

I'm trying' not to show it, so--

KATE SNOW:

W-- what's behind that?

MIKE ANDERSON:

My kids. The love for my family.

BUT HE HAS FAITH THAT HE WILL GO HOME.

MIKE ANDERSON:

every day that I wake up, /every time the door opens, I'm believing' that it's my day. Return to index of stories...

TRAIN DERAILMENT-VO IN PLASMA

THE VIDEO IS AMAZING AND TERRIFYING.

INVESTIGATORS ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO NEARLY 50-THOUSAND GALLONS OF CRUDE OIL AFTER A FREIGHT TRAIN DERAILED IN LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA.

ATHENA JONES IS UNCOVERING BRAND NEW CLUES FIRST AT FOUR. Return to index of stories...

TRAIN DERAILMENT-PKG

CLOUDS OF THICK, BLACK SMOKE FILLED THE AIR AFTER THIS CSX FREIGHT TRAIN - CARRYING CRUDE OIL - JUMPED THE TRACKS IN DOWNTOWN LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA.

"I saw this black smoke and flames just shooting up real bad."

IN ALL--ABOUT A DOZEN CARS DERAILED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND CAUGHT FIRE ALONG THE JAMES RIVER, BURNING FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS.

"I was hiding behind a car, waiting for my ride to get there to let us in the car. Yeah, I wasn't 25 yards."

NEARBY HOMES AND BUILDINGS WERE EVACUATED, AND WHILE NO ONE WAS INJURED, AND THE CITY SAID ITS WATER SUPPLY WASN'T AFFECTED --

THE INCIDENT COMES AMID GROWING CONCERNS ABOUT THE SAFETY OF TRANSPORTING DANGEROUS CHEMICALS BY RAIL.

OUTGOING NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD CHAIRMAN DEBORAH HERSMAN HELD A TWO-DAY FORUM ON THE ISSUE JUST LAST WEEK.

"The issue is what shouldn't be transported in those cars."

AN OIL BOOM IN NORTH DAKOTA AND CANADA MEANS FOUR TIMES MORE CRUDE IS BEING SHIPPED BY RAIL NOW THAN IN 2005.

AND THAT MEANS THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS ACCIDENTS -- LIKE THIS ONE IN QUEBEC LAST JULY, WHEN A DERAILMENT AND FIRE KILLED 47 PEOPLE --

AND A STRING OF ACCIDENTS LAST WINTER IN ALABAMA, NORTH DAKOTA AND NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.

IN A LETTER SENT TO PRESIDENT OBAMA, JUST HOURS BEFORE THE ACCIDENT, NEW YORK GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO DEMANDED THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STRENGTHEN NATIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS FOR TRANSPORTING CRUDE -- WARNING THAT "INADEQUATE RAIL TANKS" COULD MAKE STATES LIKE NEW YORK "EXTREMELY VULNERABLE TO THE IMPACTS OF A DERAILMENT, SPILL, FIRE OR EXPLOSION."
