That's HOW INVESTIGATORS ARE DESCRIBING AN ARREST OF A MINNESOTA TEEN ACCUSED OF PLOTTING TO KILL CLASSMATES AT HIS SCHOOL.

MN SCHOOL ATTACK PLOT-PKG

FROM THE DEADLY SHOOTING RAMPAGE AT COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL -- TO THE KILLINGS ON THE VIRGINIA TECH CAMPUS, AND THE HEARTBREAKING LOSS OF YOUNG LIVES AT SANDY HOOK.

THESE EVENTS ALL ALLEGEDLY SERVED AS INSPIRATION FOR A 17-YEAR-OLD IN WASECA, MINNESOTA --

A STUDENT, WHO AUTHORITIES BELIEVE, HAD "TWISTED" PLANS OF HIS OWN.

"His plan was to kill his family members, start a diversionary fire in rural Waseca to distract first responders, and travel to the Waseca junior and senior high school. Once there, he planned to set off numerous bombs during the lunch hour, kill the school resource officer as he responded to help, set fires, and shoot students and staff."

A VIOLENT PLOT -- THWARTED -- BY CHELSIE SCHELLHAS.

A RESIDENT, WHO REPORTED WHAT SHE BELIEVED TO BE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY AT A STORAGE FACILITY.

THAT LED POLICE TO THE TEENAGER -- IN A LOCKER WITH BOMB-MAKING MATERIALS.

EVERYTHING, FROM PYROTECHNIC CHEMICALS, TO STEEL BALL BEARINGS, GUN POWDER AND AMMUNITION, ALSO -- AT HIS HOME.

"Numerous guns, ammunition, prepared bombs, and paperwork documenting his plans were removed from the home."

THE INVESTIGATION STARTED MARCH 24TH -- WHEN POLICE BEGAN DISCOVERING EXPLOSIVE DEVICES AT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND.

A PLACE THAT SEEMED TO BE HIS TESTING GROUND.

THEY BELIEVE HIS FINAL BLUEPRINT WAS TO TARGET WASECA JUNIOR & SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, AND HE EXPECTED SWAT TEAMS TO KILL HIM.

A PLAN OFFICIALS SAY HE ORIGINALLY WANTED TO CARRY OUT ON APRIL 20TH -- TO COMMEMORATE THE MASSACRE AT COLUMBINE -- BUT DIDN'T BECAUSE IT WAS EASTER SUNDAY, AND SCHOOL WAS NOT IN SESSION.

"We can either believe that this is the result of a lucky break, or chose to believe as I do that God was looking out for all of us."

A SMALL MINNESOTA TOWN -- THANKFUL, THIS DAY -- TO HAVE APPARENTLY AVOIDED BECOMING ONE MORE -- IN A LONG LIST OF TRAGIC SCHOOL SHOOTINGS.

NO ONE IS MORE INTUNE WITH YOUR CHILD THAN YOU- MANY TIMES IT'S PARENTS WHO ACTUALLY PICK UP THE SIGNALS THAT SOMETHING DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT.

DR. PIERRE LOREDO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:31: Absolutely, a lot of these are intuitive when you think 'gosh I think something is wrong with my child's hearing. You call to them they say what, look at me a little confused.'

In the first few years of life, hearing is a critical part of A CHILD'S social, emotional, and cognitive development. Even a mild hearing loss can affect THEIR ability to speak and understand language. BABIES ARE GIVEN THEIR FIRST SCREENING AT THE HOSPITAL. SOME REQUIRE ON-GOING ATTENTION.

DR. PIERRE LOREDO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

3:23: There are a lot of red flags. An intra-utero infection meaning when the baby was in the womb had an infection, family history of hearing loss, certain medicines they are on, these things can put us at risk for hearing loss and so those are the ones you really want to make sure to screen.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Not all hearing loss is the result of a birth defect. Sometimes it is acquired. The result of infection, trauma or exposure to extreme noise. There are 'milestones' for measuring a baby's hearing- like a startle response to loud sounds and reacting to their parent's voice. Regardless of age- there are ways to test a child's hearing.

DR. PIERRE LOREDO/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

1:29 We have different tests, we have Auditory Brain Stem Response.:54 We also check your hearing during your regular health supervision visits and they also check at most schools.

IT PAYS FOR PARENTS TO KEEP THEIR EYES AND EARS OPEN TOO. THE EARLIER A PROBLEM IS DETECTED, THE BETTER THE TREATMENT OPTIONS. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A COUPLE OF CLOUDY DAYS

You can expect to see more cloud cover today and tomorrow across Southwest Florida. There is a cold front headed toward us. Ahead of that front, there will be more cloud cover today. We could get a few scattered showers and storms this afternoon, but better rain chances come during the evening. As the front approaches, we'll get some showers and storms to start moving into Southwest Florida from the northwest around 5pm. Highs will be in the upper 80s today. Into tonight, the clouds will stick around we could even see a few showers and storms linger in the area with lows in the lower 70s.

For Saturday the clouds will still be with us. With the front pushing its way through the area, we'll keep the chance for a few showers off and on at any point in the day. Highs will be in the mid 80s.

By Sunday, we'll start to see gradual clearing through the day with some sunshine the afternoon. High temperatures will be in the mid and upper 80s, but there will be less humidity in place.

We'll continue with mostly sunny skies thorugh the middle of next week with afternoon high temperatures climbing back to near 90 degrees. Return to index of stories...

UNEMPLOYMENT-ONCAM

THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS NOW AT 6 POINT THREE PERCENT NATIONWIDE.

THAT'S THE LOWEST LEVEL SINCE 2008.

BUT ARE MORE PEOPLE FINDING JOBS OR ARE MORE PEOPLE GIVING UP ON THE SEARCH?

NBC'S CHRIS CLACKUM TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ISSUE. Return to index of stories...

UNEMPLOYMENT-PKG

ANALYSTS FOUND A LOT TO LIKE FRIDAY ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT FALLING IN APRIL FROM 6-POINT-7 TO 6-POINT-3 PERCENT.

AND THE 288,000 JOBS CREATED BEING 70-THOUSAND MORE THAN PREDICTED.

BUT PRESIDENT OBAMA WANTS MORE. FROM CONGRESS.

120755

"There's plenty more Congress should be doing from raising the minimum wage to creating good construction jobs rebuilding America"

CONSTRUCTION IS WHERE MORE JOBS THAN PREVIOUSLY REPORTED WERE ADDED IM FEBRUARY AND MARCH.

THE NUMBERS DO COME WITH A QUALIFIER, THOUGH. THAT HAS A LOT TO DO WITH THE WEATHER.

"I think what we're seeing here is a snapback from very harsh winter weather. clearly there was some pent up demand from hiring among employers and they waited really until the weather cleared"

THE JOB GROWTH WAS WIDESPREAD, TOO, AND, ACCORDING LABOR SECRETARY THOMAS PEREZ.WELL PAYING.

"Construction jobs, education and health, professional and business services. these are all middle class and upper middle class jobs"

ALL THIS IS WHAT THIS MONTH'S COLLEGE GRADUATES WANT TO HEAR.AND IS IN LINE WITH A SURVEY OF EMPLOYERS BY CHALLENGER, GRAY AND CHRISTMAS.

"It was very positive, two thirds said they planned to hire college grads from this year's class"

BUT POSSIBLY THE BIGGER POSITIVE IS A BETTER JOB MARKET SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

"Underlying job growth looks to be stronger and that might mean a quicker decline to the un-employment rate in the months ahead."

A QUICKER DECLINE TO AN UNEMPLOYMENT RATE THAT'S ALREADY THE LOWEST IN SIX YEARS.

City officials are concerned about contractors who may come in and take advantage of residents.

They been showing up?

Yeah. A lot of them. You know. they want to help.

BY EARLY MORNING TUESDAY, CHASTAIN HAD ALREADY BEEN APPROACHED BY SEVERAL REPAIR CREWS. THE MAYOR HAS ORDERED ALL CONTRACTORS TO REGISTER WITH THE CITY BEFORE TAKING ON ANY JOBS INSIDE THE CITY LIMITS.

A lot of contractors are not rip-off artists, but we are asking that they come to City Hall and get a transient vendor license in order to do business, which means they have insurance and they are bonded -- that type of thing.
