CONTROVERSIAL OIL DRILLING UPDATE-BNR-PKG

ENVIRONMENTALISTS HAVE SPECULATED FOR MONTHS---

Karen Dwyer

Stonecrab Alliance

Dan A. Hughes is not being honest. Just like they weren't being honest when they said we're not going to frack 04

NOW-

THE D-E-P IS TAKING ITS OWN ACTION AGAINST THE DAN A. HUGHES COMPANY.

IN A STATEMENT FRIDAY--

THE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT ORDERED THE COMPANY to STOP ALL NEW OPERATIONS IN FLORIDA

WHILE THEY INVESTIGATE A SITE SOUTH OF LAKE TRAFFORD-

IT'S THE SAME SITE THE D-E-P ACCUSED THE COMPANY OF ILLEGALLY DRILLING LAST MONTH.

Karen Dwyer

Stonecrab Alliance

They've already proven that they won't abide by industry best practices. That they are guilty of criminal wrong doing, reckless disregard for our water shed and our everglades, so they hould be shut down. 11

THE ORDER COMES ONE DAY AFTER SENATOR BILL NELSON CALLED FOR A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

SAYING QUOTE--

"We cannot tolerate expanded industrial drilling activities that pose a threat to the drinking and surface water so close to the Florida Everglades."

Karen Dwyer

Stonecrab Alliance

WE're glad that the senator has finally come on board. We've tried to contact him for over a year now. We've gone up and spoken with his legislative assistant. 07

ACCORDING TO THE D-E-P

THE ORDER WILL AFFECT THREE DRILLING SITES IN COLLIER COUNTY.

ONE IN GOLDEN GATE ESTATES

ANOTHER TWO MILES SOUTH OF IMMOKALEE

AND A THIRD - AT THE COLLIER HOGAN WELL SOUTH OF LAKE TRAFFORD-WHERE A THIRD PARTY WILL BE TESTING WATER SAMPLES.

IN A STATEMENT TO NBC 2 --

THE DAN A HUGHES COMPANY DENIED ALLEGATIONS OF FRACKING -- SAYING QUOTE -- "AT NO TIME HAS THE GROUNDWATER BEEN IN DANGER."

THE COMPANY SAYS IT WILL FULLY PERFORM THE WELL MONITORING

AND is CONFIDENT THE RESULTS WILL SHOW THE OPERATIONS ARE SAFE.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS HOPE THE D-E-P WILL FIND ENOUGH TO STOP THE COMPANY FROM DRILLING OIL IN COLLIER COUNTY FOR GOOD.

Karen Dwyer

Stonecrab Alliance

I hope that they shut down dan a. hughes 04

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

A cool front is slowly edging its way down the Florida peninsula this Friday evening, bringing down plenty of clouds along with some scattered showers and storms.

As we work through the evening and overnight, expect the possibility of rain and evening a couple of thunderstorms.

The line of rain and storms will be gradually weaken as it pushes into Southwest Florida tonight, but we'll keep the chance of rain in our forecast through the overnight hours and into our Saturday.

The best chance of rain Saturday will come during the morning and midday time frame, but we should start to dry things out by the late afternoon and evening.

Plan for a mostly cloudy day on Saturday, but even with lots of cloud cover around, temperatures should manage to reach the mid 80s by the middle of the day.

Sunday will be the nicer weekend day with more sunshine and even a refreshing drop in humidity as we get on the north side of the front--where the air is slightly cooler and less humid.

Temperatures will still be rather warm by Sunday afternoon with highs reaching the mid to upper 80s, but keep in mind the air will feel a bit more comfortable as humidity levels take a dip.

Our sky will continue to clear out through the upcoming week, making way for lots of sunshine and some pretty warm temperatures.

Highs for most of next the week will peak in the upper 80s to low 90s, but overnight temperatures will be slightly cooler with lows in the mid 60s for the first half of the week.

Rain chances will stay relatively low next week with no approaching weather systems expected until next weekend.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

WITH THAT -- CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT CHANGED COURSE -- ANNOUNCING HIS SUPPORT FOR A MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILL.

APPEALS FROM FAMILIES OF SICK KIDS SWAYED MANY FLORIDA LAWMAKERS TO VOTE YES.

THE BILL ALLOWS LIMITED USE OF MARIJUANA FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM SEIZURES.

DOCTORS COULD PRESCRIBE AN OIL-FORM. LOW T-H-C STRAIN OF THE DRUG CALLED CHARLOTTE'S WEB.

SENATOR LIZBETH BENACQUISTO VOTED NO. SAYING WHILE SHE SUPPORTS TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN THE NEW VERSION OF THE BILL GOES TOO FAR--

AND SHE CAN'T BACK COVERAGE OF MORE AILMENTS.

THIS BILL IS MORE LIMITED THAN A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDEMENT UP FOR A VOTE IN NOVEMBER.

THAT WOULD ALLOW DOCTORS TO PRESCRIBE MORE POTENT VERSIONS OF THE DRUG FOR MORE ILLNESSES.

AND IT HAS POLITICAL EFFECTS.

CHARLIE CRIST HAS ALIGNED HIMSELF WITH THE AMENDMENT - WHICH HELP HIM BY DRAWING MORE PROGRESSIVE VOTERS TO THE POLLS.

TODAY'S BILL MAY CHANGE THAT. Return to index of stories...
