FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A dry stretch of weather"

After a soggy start to the weekend, we ended it on a sunnier note. With no big weather systems headed our way, expect tranquil conditions over the next several days with a big warm up through the week.

After an unseasonably cool start to the day, temperatures will quickly climb into the lower half of the 80s by the noon hour. Wall to wall sunshine will prevail through the afternoon as temperatures make their way into the upper 80s. Lower 90s will be felt deeper inland in a few spots, while slightly cooler readings will be along the coast.

Through the evening, temperatures will start to settle back into the lower 80s. Mostly clear skies will remain in the forecast tonight with comfortable temperatures as they dip into the lower to middle 60s area wide.

As high pressure continues to build in across the peninsula, expect mostly sunny skies through Tuesday. Daytime highs will be quite toasty as they top out in the lower 90s. As winds turn more southeasterly and humidity levels start to come up a bit, morning lows will gradually warm into the middle to upper 60s, while daytime temperatures return to the lower 90s each afternoon. The forecast looks dry for much of next week with partly sunny conditions. Models are hinting at a few showers by next weekend, but rain prospects at this time are only around 20%. WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

34 MILLION AMERICANS SUFFER FROM ASTHMA.

MOST ARE ABLE TO MANAGE SYMPTOMS WITH STEROIDS AND OTHER MEDICATIONS.

FOR SOME THOUGH ASTHMA ATTACKS ARE SO SEVERE THAT DRUGS AREN'T ENOUGH.

AMY OSHIER EXPLAINS A NEW TECHNIQUE IN TODAY'S HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

WITH EVERY BREATH COMES FEAR FOR MANY ADULT ASTHMATICS. FEAR OF THEIR AIRWAYS CLOSING WHILE THEY'RE POWERLESS TO STOP IT. NOW THERE IS A NEW ALTERNATIVE FOR PEOPLE WITH HARD TO MANAGE SYMPTOMS.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

:11 There's a new technology in the treatment of asthma that's called bronchial thermoplasty. We use this technology on folks who have severe asthma and whose symptoms have not been controlled with usual medical therapy.

BRONCHIAL THERMOPLASTY IS PERFORMED AS AN OUT-PATIENT PROCEDURE. IT TARGETS MUSCLES IN THE AIRWAYS THAT SWELL AND CONSTRICT DURING AN ASTHMA ATTACK- BY APPLYING HEAT DOCTORS ARE ABLE TO SHRINK THE MUSCLES.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

50 So the idea is can we do something to weaken these muscles so that they don't close down the airways so tight? What we do in bronchial thermoplasty is take a thin, flexible, fiberoptic tube with a camera at it's tip, from the nose down into the lungs. We take it to each individual breathing tube and at a very, very, low frequency we emit heat energy that allows that muscle around the breathing tubes to shrink.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Bronchial thermoplasty is first non-drug therapy approved by the FDA to treat severe asthma. Patients who qualify undergo multiple treatments. While it is not, most find it can limit if not eliminate attacks.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

3:05 Getting back from a point where you're always scared when the next asthma attack is going to be when you can't even get a good night's sleep because you have to wake up two or three times to use your rescue inhaler. Going from that to being well controlled is a huge improvement.

THE PROCEDURE IS ONLY APPROVED FOR ADULTS AND IS NOW AVAILABLE LOCALLY.

DR. SAGAR NAIK/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:21 It's a brand new technology, it's a technology that Lee Memorial has invested in and we plan to use to treat our asthma patients.

IT'S HOPED BY TURNING UP THE HEAT, PATIENTS CAN DIAL DOWN THEIR DEPENDENCE ON MEDICATIONS. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
