MARRIOTT EXPANSION CONTROVERSY-PKG

Whether they're for or against it -

Marco Island residents came to city council ready to speak their mind on the Marriott's plans to expand.

Nancy Book

Marco Island resident

45:02 45:07

I've never come to a meeting but I felt strongly that I wanted to come and hear what people had to say

Tonight only council had a say -

deciding to push the public hearing back until next month.

Rick Medwedeff

General Manager, Marco Island Marriott

39:43 39:46

Obviously quite disappointed that this got continued

The resort's general manager had his presentation ready to go -

to explain why council should approve a change to the existing ordinance -

allowing the Marriott to build bigger and taller.

Medwedeff

42:20 42:26

In returns we believe that we will provide jobs on the island

Some councilors argued the draft ordinance - which the resort wrote - wasn't up to par -

and city staff should take another look at it before council decides anything.

Amadeo Petricca

Marco Island City Council

33:50 33:54

Write this ordinance the way it should have been written on the first place

The public *will have a chance to speak at the next meeting-

but by early June - seasonal residents will be long gone.

Nancy Book

Marco Island resident

44:54 45:00

We won't be here the next time there's a meeting so that makes me sad

Some arguing - on a topic this controversial -

they'd rather speak their mind on a ballot

Susan Helton

Marco island resident

Anything this important - shouldn't it be put to a vote? Not off season? Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A dry stretch of weather"

After a soggy start to the weekend, we ended it on a sunnier note. With no big weather systems headed our way, expect tranquil conditions over the next several days with a big warm up through the week.

Wall to wall sunshine will prevail through the late afternoon hours as temperatures peak in the upper 80s. Lower 90s will be felt deeper inland in a few spots, while slightly cooler readings will be along the coast as the seabreeze develops.

Through the evening, temperatures will start to settle back into the lower 80s. Mostly clear skies will remain in the forecast tonight with comfortable temperatures as they dip into the lower to middle 60s area wide.

As high pressure continues to build in across the peninsula, expect mostly sunny skies through Tuesday. Daytime highs will be quite toasty as they top out in the lower 90s. As winds turn more southeasterly and humidity levels start to come up a bit, morning lows will gradually warm into the middle to upper 60s, while daytime temperatures return to the lower 90s each afternoon. The forecast looks dry for much of next week with partly sunny conditions. Models are hinting at a few showers by next weekend, but rain prospects at this time are only around 20-30%.
