AVILA FAMILY MURDER FOLLOW-trxPKG

The burned out shell of the mansion rented by the Campbell family sits in stark contrast the surrounding opulence of this upscale Avila neighborhood. Balloons, flowers and cards are attached to the mailbox.

"I think everybody just questions what mentality it takes, what state of mind are you in when you can kill your family kill your children? You can't even process that," said neighbor Sheliah Maudin.

Deputies confirm, Campbell bought a large quantity of fireworks and purchased gas cans on Sunday. On Tuesday, he continued his diabolical plot, buying gas at two different stations.

Wednesday morning, he put the plot into motion, placing the fireworks throughout the house and using the gas to get the fire going.

"Darrin Campbell systematically with the gun that was registered to him, a 40 Sig sour systematically shot his son, his daughter, and his wife in the head," said Col. Donna Luscznski.

Campbell had bought the gun almost a year earlier from Shooter's World on Fletcher Avenue. Manager, Bruce Kitzis said Darrin Campbell passed state and federal background checks and never returned after picking up the sig 40 caliber.

This case, especially with kids involved, is hitting investigators, hard.

"Anytime this happens, it's a tragedy. And it's disturbing to us as a sheriff's office, the investigators and everybody that participated," said Col. Donna Luscznski. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN-CLIP

Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's been a classic May afternoon across Southwest Florida, featuring plenty of sunshine, heat, and humidity.

We've also seen more patchy clouds bubbling up through the heat of the day, but still, temperatures had no trouble soaring into the low 90s during the afternoon.

We'll keep the warm temperatures in the forecast as we go through the evening, and we'll even watch for a spotty shower or two along the sea breeze.

Our sky will stay partly to mostly cloudy overnight, and temperatures will only cool off into the low to mid 70s by Sunday morning.

Our Mother's Day forecast will look slightly different as some thin clouds work in from the northwest, filtering our sunshine at times. We'll still manage to work in partial sunshine through the morning and afternoon hours, which will warm our temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s again.

Coastal communities should top out right around the mid to upper 80s where the sea breeze will keep daytime highs slightly lower.

Like today, we'll see the possibility for just a few isolated afternoon downpours firing along the sea breeze, but rain coverage will stay very spotty. Overall, our rain chance for Mother's Day will be around 20%.

Rain prospects will be a touch higher for the first half of next week as some extra tropical moisture grazes Southwest Florida, helping to produce some isolated showers and storms during the afternoon.

Our sky will stay partly sunny for most of the week, which will keep our temperatures rather toasty; highs will top out around 90, and overnight lows will drop to near 70 degrees. Return to index of stories...
