WX HEADLINE-WX CENTER

We had some pretty amazing weather over the last week with lots of sunshine and comfortable humidity levels. As we head into Mother's Day weekend, our weather will stay mainly dry, but the humidity will be on the rise with temperatures in the lower 90s.

Our morning will get off to a mostly sunny start with a few high clouds overhead and temperatures will be quite mild as they range from the upper 60s north, to the lower 70s south. As high pressure remains to our east, expect winds to be breezy at times today as they remain out of the south/southeast. Thus, our Saturday afternoon will be hot with daytime highs in the lower 90s with a bit more humidity. Plan on a partly sunny day with the possibility of an isolated shower deep inland.

Tonight, a few clouds will remain across the area, while overnight lows settle into the lower 70s.

Mother's Day will be hot and humid with afternoon temperatures in the lower 90s. Expect partly sunny skies with an isolated shower or two during the peak heating hours. The work week will get off to a mainly dry start, with increasing rain chances as we head into Tuesday and Wednesday. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The heat and humidity will be the main focus this Mother's Day weekend across Southwest Florida, and we'll even be watching for the possibility of a few showers developing late in the day.

We'll start off quite warm through the morning hours as temperatures quickly climb to the mid to upper 80s by noon; our afternoon temps will peak in the low to mid 90s except along the coast where the afternoon sea breeze will hold temperatures in the middle 80s.

Overall, our Saturday should end up being a fairly sunny day, but we'll also have some more clouds mixing in with sunshine through the day.

Humidity levels will be noticeably higher over the weekend as our winds remain southeasterly from 5-15 mph with some gusts up to 20 mph.

Rain chances will stay relatively low through the afternoon both today and Sunday, but there should be just enough moisture in place to spark a few late-day downpours along the sea breeze.

Mother's day will likely be a bit cloudier than today as some thin clouds work in from the Gulf, but our sky should stay at least partly sunny as temperatures peak around 90 degrees.

We'll keep a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast for the upcoming week along with the chance for some isolated showers and storms during the afternoon along the sea breeze.

Temperatures will continue to stay rather hot with highs around 90 and lows near 70 degrees. Return to index of stories...

NEIGHBOR VERSUS NEIGHBOR.

Capt. Tim Guerrette/CCSO/23:24:53 "We take all of these incidents seriously."

CONFLICTS THAT CAN TEAR LIVES APART.

Capt. Guerrette/23:24:56 "every situation is independent."

CAPTAIN TIM GUERRETTE SAYS EVERY ARGUMENT HAS ITS OWN ROOT.

AND THE NUMBER ONE THING HOMEOWNERS should do from the start - GET LAW ENFORCEMENT INVOLVED.

Capt. Guerrette/23:24:59 "we try to determine how we can better mediate or mitigate the problem."

BUT EVERY PROBLEM ISN'T BLACK AND WHITE.

Capt. Guerrette/23:25:13 "unfortunately with the laws that we have we can't always solve the problem there."

GUERRETTE SAYS 95% OF THE CALLS ARE USUALLY HANDLED AND DONE WITH.

WHILE THE OTHER 5%.

Capt. Guerrette/23:28:49 "there is a small percentage where the neighbors do get so heated, so frustrated and there is violence."

CAN END WITH CONFRONTATIONS LIKE THIS.

JUST LAST NIGHT - DEPUTIES ARRESTED 34-YEAR-OLD Stacy Scuderi AND CHARGED HER WITH TRESPASSING AND BATTERY.

THIS - AFTER DEPUTIES SAY SHE was TRESPASS ing IN HER NEIGHBOR'S GARAGE.

Angela Sutherland/Naples/23:07:03 "she came towards me in my garage and attacked me in my garage."

A BIZARRE INCIDENT NEIGHBORS CAUGHT THE END OF, ON CAMERA -

THE COUPLE SAYS THEY'VE DOCUMENTED EVERY INCIDENT OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.

ANOTHER SMART THING HOMEOWNERS CAN DO.

Capt. Gurrette/23:27:56 "i know we've communicated with them for several years in this one situation, they have done the right thing as far as giving us a call."

BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY - ALTERCATIONS LIKE THIS - ARE EXACTLY WHAT DEPUTIES ARE TRYING TO AVOID.

Capt. Gurrette/23:28:58 "our goal is to eliminate any type of violence, injury and we don't want to see an outcome that would be negative." Return to index of stories...

12:58:46 "How can you say you can have a 2 car garage, but only put

one car in it, my boats cost more than most cars on the road" Hooten

THE CITY ALLOWS ONE CANOPY PER HOUSEHOLD

ANY MORE- AND IT MUST GO THROUGH THE CITY'S PLANNING AND ZONING BOARD.

WHICH HAS REJECTED NUMEROUS REQUESTS LIKE HOOTEN'S

13:31:58 "It was already turned down by the zoning board, 6 to 0, it

was denied I think they better leave it the way that it is." Joel

Pusateri, Against Canopy

JOEL PUSATERI IS AGAINST HOOTEN'S CANOPY

HE FEARS THE ADDITIONAL CANOPY NOT ONLY OBSTRUCTS WATERFRONT VIEWS-

BUT IS A SAFETY HAZARD.

13:30:35 "I will say the city will have a huge liability problem if

they pass this because the visibility will be obstructed even more."

Pusateri HOOTEN HOPES THAT MONDAY CITY LEADERS WILL NOT ONLY GRANT

HIS REQUEST BUT OPEN THE DOOR TO GIVE ALL BOAT OWNERS A CHANCE TO

PROTECT THEIR TOOL TO NAVIGATE THIS PIECE OF PARADISE

13:00:54 "I believe they should redo the existing laws on the

books and try and make it so that people living in the area can do

this" Hooten Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.The heat and humidity will be the main focus this Mother's Day weekend across Southwest Florida, and we'll even be watching for the possibility of a few showers developing late in the day.

4:32 We will be removing all our fryers from all our cafeterias. So we push people away from their preponderance of fried foods and lead them to healthier products like freshly made salad or whole fruit or maybe a lean burger or a lean piece of chicken with no skin.

FOR YEARS HOSPITALS SUFFERED A BAD RAP FOR SERVING CHEAP, LACK-LUSTER FOOD. INSTEAD OF FIGHTING THE STEREOTYPE, HEALTH SYSTEMS ARE TAKING AIM.

LARRY ALTIER/DIR. FOOD & NUTRITION

6:15 We introduced about 40% more salad bar products 6:36 We introduced lean meats, more fish, fresh vegetables, we had an exhibition station that offers a vegetarian option daily.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The idea is to toss out the salty, greasy, sugary and fattening foods and adding more lean, fresh and plant-based. Serving as a healthy example, promoting the benefits of a good diet.

JEANNE STRUVE/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

1:14 Give it about three to four weeks you'll start to see the energy levels start to go up, usually cholesterol will go down, weight starts to go down.

FRESH FOODS ARE TYPICALLY VIEWED AS MORE EXPENSIVE, BUT LEE MEMORIAL Health System controls costs by relying largely on it's massive food service operation which produces for all of it's hospitals and retail settings.

THE FISHING PIER IN VENICE JUTS OUT 700 FEET INTO THE GULF, LURING FISHERMEN TO SEE WHAT SURPRISES THE WATER HOLDS BELOW.

AND LAST WEEKEND, A GROUP OF FRIENDS CAUGHT A BIG ONE.

AFTER WRESTLING THE LINE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, NOE CAMPOS JUMPED IN AFTER THE LINE GOT WRAPPED AROUND A POLE.

S/ Noe Campos/Delivered Shark Pups:22-24

"People call me crazy but, I'd rather save a fish."

THAT 'FISH' WAS A 12 FOOT HAMMERHEAD SHARK! AND ONCE THEY BROUGHT IT TO SHORE, THEY REALIZED THERE WAS A LOT MORE RESCUING TO DO.

S/Andrew Weedman /Delivered Shark Pups:34-37

"As soon as they roll it over, you can see this big hole."

THE SHARK WAS INJURED.

SOT

"it had a big radius bite, a big bite mark taken out of it."

THEN THEY NOTICED SOMETHING- LITTLE BABY SHARKS WERE INSIDE! THE FEMALE HAMMERHEAD WAS PREGNANT!

SOT

"We seen the tail, pushing out. They were trying to push their heads out, so I'm guessing the mom tried to give birth but she didn't have the strength to push them out."

THEY PULLED THEM OUT ONE BY ONE.

SOT

"They were wiggling and squirming. They were definitely very alert."

EVENTUALLY THEY PULLED OUT TWENTY BABY PUPS!

SOT

"I stood in the water for a couple of seconds to make sure they swam off good. I held them and as soon as I put them out, voom! They took off!"

SOT

"When you were delivering the babies, did you know what you were doing?"

SOT

"No. But it's the instinct where you have to get the babies out because they're alive."

UNFORTUNATELY, THE MOTHER SHARK DID NOT SURVIVE HER INJURIES. CAMPOS IS DISAPPOINTED, BUT HE'S HOPING HIS ACTIONS MAY HAVE SAVED ANOTHER GENERATION OF HAMMERHEADS. Return to index of stories...
