HELLO-TOWERCAM, WX CENTER

GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

WE ARE KICKING OFF OUR SUNDAY WITH A MIX OF SUN AND CLOUDS, ON THIS MOTHER'S DAY.

WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH IN THE WEATHER CENTER WITH METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING.

WE BOTH WANT TO SAY HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

AND WE WILL SHARE PICTURES WITH OUR MOMS A LITTLE LATER IN THE SHOW.

JASON, IT'S A DAY TO SAY THANKS TO MOM, AND CELEBRATE ALL THAT SHE DOES FOR US.

HOW'S THE WEATHER SHAPING UP? Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We'll start off Mother's Day with warm and humid weather across Southwest Florida with morning temperatures in the low to mid 70s.

Expect a little more cloud cover through the morning and midday hours as some thin clouds work in from the northwest, but we should manage to see increasing sunshine by the afternoon.

Despite the extra cloud cover around today, temperatures will stay quite warm with daytime highs returning to the upper 80s and low 90s.

Coastal communities should top out right around the mid to upper 80s where the sea breeze will keep daytime highs slightly cooler.

By the late afternoon and evening, we'll see the potential for a few isolated downpours firing along the sea breeze, but rain coverage will stay pretty spotty; overall, our rain chance today will only be around 20%.

Rain prospects will be a touch higher for the first half of next week as some deeper tropical moisture grazes South Florida, leading to some isolated showers and storms during the afternoon.

The best rain chances will likely come Wednesday afternoon when the deepest moisture moves through Southwest Florida, resulting in a scattering of showers and storms during the afternoon.

Our sky will stay partly sunny through the first half of the week, which will keep our temperatures rather toasty. Highs will top out around 90, and overnight lows will drop to near 70 degrees.

Once the tropical moisture exits toward the end of the week, we'll see sunnier skies and perhaps even a slight drop in humidity by Friday into next weekend. Return to index of stories...

SEVERAL REPORT SEEING TWO PEOPLE PLUMMETING FROM THE BASKET.

"you could hear them screaming, 'please, dear god, sweet jesus, help us, we're gonna die, oh my god, please help us."

AUTHORITIES SAY THE SEARCH IS ONGOING.

BUT THE RESCUE OPERATION IS NOW REFOCUSED ON RECOVERY.

"we do continue to keep finding debris, and various items that would've been on the hot air balloon, and that is encouraging to the search crews.

MORE THAN TWENTY HOT AIR BALLOON TEAMS WERE SCHEDULED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MID-ATLANTIC BALLOON FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND, BUT THE FESTIVAL HAS BEEN CANCELED IN THE WAKE OF THE ACCIDENT.

"i can't even imagine what those people are going through, to go to this festival and be so excited about a good day and making memories with their family, and then not coming home."

A TRAGIC END TO WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FESTIVE DAY.

I'M SCOTT THOMPSON REPORTING.

FORECAST-WXWALL

RECTAL BLEEDING ISN'T SOMETHING TO IGNORE OR PUT BEHIND YOU.

BRUSHING OFF THE CONDITION DOESN'T MAKE IT GO AWAY.

THERE ARE ACTUALLY SEVERAL POTENTIAL CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS THAT SET THEM APART.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

WHILE IT MAY NOT BE THE SUBJECT OF CASUAL CONVERSATION- RECTAL BLEEDING IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR. BUT VERY OFTEN PEOPLE ARE EMBARRASSED AND BRUSH IT OFF.

DR. JEFFREY NEALE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

:10 A lot of people think 'oh I have bleeding from my bottom, it's just hemorrhoids' and that's not always the case.

WHEN SOMEONE PRESENTS WITH BLEEDING, THE FIRST THING DOCTORS WANT TO DO IS RULE OUT CANCER.

DR. JEFFREY NEALE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

1:26 We have to work them up with our gastrointestinal colleagues to make sure there's no bleeding from the rest of the colon or in the rectum and make sure there's no polyps or cancers present.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Most times, the bleeding results from either a hemorrhoid or fissure. Both are visible on a rectal exam. While they may have the same end point- they are very different conditions and have symptoms that set them apart.

DR. JEFFREY NEALE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

2:20 If you're having pain it could be an anal fissure. An anal fissure is a tear in and around the anus that can cause quite a significant amount of pain.

GENERALLY CAUSED BY TRAUMA, STRAIN OR BOWEL DISEASE, FISSURES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH PAIN AND BLOOD DURING A BOWEL MOVEMENT. A HEMORRHOID IS AN ENGORGED OR INFLAMED VEIN IN THE RECTAL REGION. CLOTTED OR EXTERNAL HEMORRHOIDS MAY INVOLVE A LUMP. AND CONSTANT DISCOMFORT, NOT LIMITED TO USING THE BATHROOM.

DR. JEFFREY NEALE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

:40: There's inside hemorrhoids and outside hemorrhoids. They're all treated similarly even though they're somewhat different. Outside hemorrhoids may present with pain and a large purple bump and if that's slowly going away they usually would resolve on it's own.

OVER THE COUNTER-MEDICATIONS AND LIFESTYLE AND DIET CHANGES CAN USUALLY RECTIFY THE PROBLEM. YOUR DOCTOR MAY SUGGEST FURTHER TREATMENT IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
