FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Our mostly sunny and tranquil weather continued as we got the new work week started. It was also pretty hot with daytime highs topping out in the lower to middle 90s as there was not much of a cooling effect from the seabreeze. Rain prospects will be on the rise over the next several days as tropical moisture moves in from the east and southeast.

After a mild and muggy start to the day, temperatures will continue to rise through the lunchtime hour as they approach the middle 80s. Partly sunny skies will take over through much of the afternoon, while temperatures climb into the lower 90s. Just like yesterday, it will be quite humid with an easterly breeze with gusts approaching 20mph. This will not only carry over some extra clouds during the day, but it will also bring in a few passing showers from time to time.

Through the evening, expect a few rain areas to move out by the coast and eventually over the Gulf waters tonight. Expect partly cloudy skies during the overnight period, with temperatures by morning near 70°.

We'll be watching a batch of tropical moisture just off to our east and southeast associated with a weak tropical wave. The influx of moisture across Southwest Florida will enhance our rain prospects Wednesday and especially Thursday as it interacts with an approaching front. This means rain becomes a bit more widespread across the area. As a result, daytime highs will be held down in the upper 80s. A few showers will linger through early Friday, with clearing skies late in the day. This will give way to a sunnier weekend with lower humidity as over gift temperatures dip into the lower half of the 60s. Afternoons will stay pretty warm though, with temperatures in the upper 80s. MELANOMA CLINICAL TRIAL-ON CAM

SHE'S A PHARMACIST WHO DIDN'T REALIZE *SHE* WAS SICK.

BUT JUST WHEN HEIDI THOUGHT ALL HOPE WAS LOST--

SHE FOUND A NEW REASON TO BELIEVE.

FRANK MCGEORGE HAS THE STORY OF HEIDI'S SURPRISING DIAGNOSIS--

AND HER JOURNEY TO FIGHT A DANGEROUS DISEASE. Return to index of stories...

MELANOMA CLINICAL TRIAL-PKG

"I hit the corner of the countertop. And a big lump developed. It never bruised or anything."

IT WAS JUST A HARD BUMP INTO A BATHROOM COUNTER.

"I thought this will just go away, this will just go away, this will just go away. It did not go away. After about a year of saying this will go away, my husband finally said, if you don't go in and get that checked, I am going to make an appointment for you."

HEIDI HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE THE LUMP. IT WAS TESTED. AND THE RESULTS STUNNED EVERYONE.

"It was malignant melanoma. And the doctor was very surprised himself to even be telling me that."

MELANOMA. THE MOST DEADLY FORM OF SKIN CANCER. AND IT HAD ALREADY SPREAD.

HEIDI IMMEDIATELY FOCUSED ON DOING EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO BEAT IT. FOR HER TWO DAUGHTERS, TEN GRANDCHILDREN. AND JOHN, HER HUSBAND AND HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART.

"Being here for them, being here for John. And continuing to grow old together. It means everything to me."

HER DOCTORS REFERRED HER TO THE KARMANOS CANCER INSTITUTE.

IT WAS THERE THAT SHE MET MEDICAL ONCOLOGIST DR. LAWRENCE FLAHERTY.

WHEN TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS FAILED TO CONTROL THE CANCER, IT WAS DOCTOR FLAHERTY WHO SUGGESTED A CLINICAL TRIAL AT KARMANOS.

"When I heard the word clinical trial, that to me was almost worse than hearing the word cancer. It was the first time that I teared up in the office. I know I was almost panicked at that point when I heard that."

TO HEIDI, A CLINICAL TRIAL MEANT HOPE WAS FADING. NOT THE CASE, SAYS DOCTOR FLAHERTY.

"It's just the opposite. Clinical trials are the engine for progress in the cancer field. They're really the best option for care for a patient today. Heidi was fortunate enough to have a feature on her cancer that made her a candidate for some special treatment. And we were able to get her involved in a phase one study that involves two new drugs that are oral."

"My test scans right away have come back that the areas are clear, the spots are, they're GONE. They're not showing up. They're gone."

"I think the story is still being written with these new drugs. We don't know how long they'll work, and for whom they'll work, and we don't know when it's going to be safe to stop them. So we're pushing the envelope."

"She's has always been a fighter in whatever she had done. She will see it to the end, she has never been a quitter."

"Life is too short to not try. Clinical trials are something that I would recommend now. There is hope. And that's what I wanted to be able to convey to others that there is hope." Return to index of stories...

"We are providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support."

THIS VIDEO - NOT YET AUTHENTICATED - IS THE FIRST HARD EVIDENCE THAT THE GIRLS ARE STILL ALIVE --

"Our intelligence experts are combing through every detail of the video for clues that might help in the ongoing efforts."

IN THE VIDEO THE KIDNAPPERS THE ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALIST GROUP "BOKO HARAM" OFFER A TRADE: SOME 200 GIRLS FOR FOR THE RELEASE OF ITS PRISONERS.

IN THE PAST, BOKO HARAM HAS BEEN PAID MILLIONS FOR THE RELEASE OF HOSTAGES.

EXPERTS DISAGREE ON WHETHER NIGERIA WILL NEGOTIATE.

"The govt of Nigeria has no intention to pay ransom or to buy the girls."

"The best we can hope for at this point is quiet negotiation which keeps them safe, which gives you more time to identify where the vast majority are and potentially some sort of rescue."

RIGHT NOW THE U-S HAS ABOUT 50 PEOPLE THERE FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT AND THE PENTAGON.

COMMUNICATIONS. SECURITY AND MEDICAL EXPERTS. AND FBI HOSTAGE NEGOTIATORS.

SCUBA ASSAULT-PKG

This video was taken off the Kona Coast last Thursday.

The dive turned ugly.

When one diver darts over.

And rips off Rene Umberger's breathing supply 50 feet underwater.

The scene was captured on two cameras.

"This man needs to be arrested. I think this man needs to be arrested immediately for attempted murder."

The 53 year old Umberger was eventually able to get her regulator back in.

And breathe again.

That's when she captured the suspect make another threatening gesture.

"I honestly thought he was coming back for a second attack."

Umberger and the others were documenting damage to coral reefs.

When they came across the pair of divers. Who clearly didn't want their picture taken.

She credits her experience. and more than 10,000 dives. With saving her life.

"An inexperienced diver would likely panic. Either panic from the stress of the situation and shoot for the surface. They may panic because their air source is missing and they can't find it, those incidents often lead to death."

She believes she knows who the suspect is.

And wants to press charges.

The State Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement says it is investigating.

And will turn its information over to the County Prosecutors office.

"The greater issue is that Hawaii's reefs are being emptied by these commercial operations."

"Hawaii's reefs are suffering incredibly from this unlimited collection."

And the video shows how aggressive people can be. Return to index of stories...
