FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Clouds and some sun will take over for the rest of the afternoon, while temperatures climb into the lower 90s. Just like yesterday, it will be quite humid with an easterly breeze with gusts approaching 20mph. This will not only carry over some extra clouds during the late afternoon, but it will also bring in a few passing downpours from time to time.

Through the evening, expect a few rain areas to move out by the coast and eventually over the Gulf waters tonight. Expect partly cloudy skies during the overnight period, with temperatures by morning in the lower 70s.

We'll be watching a batch of tropical moisture just off to our east and southeast associated with a weak tropical wave. The influx of moisture across Southwest Florida will enhance our rain prospects Wednesday and especially Thursday as it interacts with an approaching cold front. This means rain becomes a bit more widespread across the area. As a result, daytime highs will be held down in the upper 80s. A few showers will linger through early Friday, with clearing skies late in the day. This will give way to a sunnier weekend with lower humidity as overnight temperatures dip into the lower half of the 60s. Afternoons will stay pretty warm though, with temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Return to index of stories...

WATER GUSHING ALL OVER THE GROUND AND INTO THE STREET AT FOWLER AND EDISON IN FORT MYERS.

WHEN YOU SEE A HYDRANT OPEN - IT'S NOT BY MISTAKE.

I FOUND *SEVERAL REASONS.

FROM SAVING BUILDINGS AND MONEY ON INSURANCE TO WATER QUALITY. Return to index of stories...

GQ FIRE HYDRANTS-PKG

YOU KNOW HYDRANTS ARE USED *FIGHT* FIRE.

most people just don't understand.

FORT MYERS' DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF SAYS THEY'RE ALSO OPENED UP TO *PREVENT* FIRE.

A new business comes into town and they want to know if their building

needs a sprinkler system or not.

SO THEY DO WHAT'S CALLED 'FLOW TESTING.'

Those figures calculate how many gallons per minute we can

actually get out of that hydrant.

THERE'S A CLEAR REASON WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT.

The fact that the fire hydrant's going to work when the big red truck

pulls up.

IT'S ALSO A MEASURE OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD'S WATER CAPACITY.

A GOOD FLOW CAN ALSO SAVE YOU MONEY.

So with a good water system. The fire department is going to get a

better rating. You're going to get better insurance rates.

FIREFIGHTERS TYPICALLY LEAVE HYDRANTS OPEN FOR ONLY FIVE OR TEN MINUTES.

SO WHY WAS THIS HYDRANT IN FORT MYERS LEFT OPEN FOR TWO DAYS? THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION FOR PUBLIC WORKS.

We use it to flush the water lines.

RICHARD MOULTON SAYS EXPECT TO SEE OPEN HYDRANTS AFTER A WATER MAIN BREAK.

We usually flush at a very low flow for extended periods of time to

make sure fresh water is coming in to that entire neighborhood.

AFTER A PIPE IS REPAIRED, THE WATER IS TESTED FOR BACTERIA.

MOULTON SAYS HYDRANTS WILL BE LEFT OPEN FOR THE SAME DURATION AS TESTING - USUALLY TWO DAYS.

We still think it's in our best interest. and our citizens best

interest, for us to flush until it's right.

HYDRANTS IN OLDER SECTIONS OF TOWN, WITH METAL PIPES, ALSO GET FLUSHED IF THE WATER DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT.

We use it in areas where there are metal pipes and corrosion has set in. Return to index of stories...

Some admit they've never heard of it.

Others can much less pronounce it.

04:58:33 "Chikungunya" Robert Prout

But today many are learning the threat of Chikungunya is one hundred

percent real.

Its a disease that's spreading rapidly through mosquitoes, mainly in

the Caribbean.

04:38: "I think it's something we here in SWFL need to be concerned

about" Jim Stark, Executive Director, Collier mosquito Control

District

Not only because of our proximity to where the disease is thriving but

because Chikungunya aka CHIKV is a dangerous virus that can affect

anyone,

04:40:09 "We're increasing our surveillance, we're looking for where

the mosquitoes and then we want to test them to make sure we are aware

of any virus activity" stark

The virus causes flu like symptoms with severe joint pain. In fact

it's name is derived from the African word meaning "to bend over" from

the associated pain

04:42:23 "our concern is with being so close in the Caribbean it's not

if but when CHIKV shows up and we want to be prepared as possible"

stark

From the sky- to these traps.

Mosquito experts say they're are only 2 known mosquito species that

carry the virus.

Both requiring small pools of water to breed. Hence their message:

When it doubt, dump it out

04:59:58 "sounds like a good line, good advice"
