Severely burned dog rushed to The Gulf Coast Humane Society, 2010 Arcadia Street, Fort Myers, by concerned citizen last week. Sampson, a two year old Terrier mix, is being treated at the GCHS and his injuries are being investigated by Lee County Domestic Animal Services, 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers.

Found off of New York Avenue in Fort Myers, Sampson has been treated at the Gulf Coast Humane Society Veterinary Clinic since May 7th. GCHS Veterinarian and Clinic Staff believe his injuries are the result of a strong chemical burn, on top of existing injuries. Sampson will need at least another week of recovery before his burns will begin to scar.

Despite his condition, Sampson is a sweet dog who calmly lets the staff tend to his injuries. "He has a wonderful personality that shows the resilience and forgiving nature of animals," stated Jennifer Galloway, executive director of the Gulf Coast Humane Society. Return to index of stories...

"Turkey has a terrible record of mine safety. Still, officials in this country say this is likely the worst mining accident in Turkey's history. The government has declared three days of national mourning."

A MASSIVE RESCUE OPERATION IS UNDERWAY THIS MORNING AT A COAL MINE IN SOMA, TURKEY, ABOUT 150 MILES SOUTH OF ISTANBUL, AFTER AN EXPLOSION TRIGGERED A FIRE. WHICH TRAPPED HUNDREDS OF WORKERS MORE THAN A MILE UNDERGROUND.

"MY ELDER BROTHER IS INSIDE THE HOSPITAL," SAID THIS MAN.

"HE WAS WORKING FROM 8AM TILL 4PM. BUT WE DIDN'T HEAR FROM HIM. NOW WE ARE WAITING."

"This mine is very deep, and it is still on fire, which means the shafts have filled with toxic fumes, so the chances of many more people coming out alive are slim. Richard Engel, NBC News, Istanbul." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing rain prospects"

Partly sunny skies will remain in place through the late morning hours and the trend will be for a few showers to make their way into southern Collier county. Once again through the day, you'll notice some pretty breezy easterly winds with gusts closing in on 20 mph. We'll see cloudy periods from time to time this afternoon with rain and a few storms becoming a bit more widespread across the area. Due to the clouds and the rain, expect daytime highs to reach the upper 80s.

For the most part, the rain should begin to wind down as we head into the evening hours. There may be a few leftover rain pockets, however the overnight period should stay fairly dry with temperatures in the lower 70s.

We'll be gearing up for another wet day on Thursday with the potential for some heavy downpours. This is all due to that tropical moisture interacting with an approaching cold front moving in from the northwest. Ahead of the front, winds will be turning more onshore so a few downpours washing in from the Gulf first thing in the morning is certainly not out of the question with most of the rain shifting inland. Once this cold front passes Southwest Florida, expect lingering clouds early Friday morning with clearing skies through the day. High pressure will build in from the Gulf of Mexico and this will set the stage for a splendid weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will feature tons of sunshine, highs in the upper 80s, along with a nice drop in humidity. Return to index of stories...

"a lot of younger generation, they build their self esteem of having more followers on twitter or instagram or facebook friends, and that's unfortunately what exposes you to risk."

"and while these kids may not be worried too much about their identity now, if it gets stolen, it's a problem that could dog them for years."

"it could cost them more for a house or mean less credit. i don't know if they really are as invested or care as much about that quite yet."

STORJOHANN SAYS ITS TIME TO BETTER EDUCATED YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN ABOUT THEIR ONLINE RISKS. TEACHING THEM TO BETTER PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION FROM BIRTHDAYS TO PET NAMES. AND BEING MORE SKEPTICAL OF SO-CALLED ONLINE FRIENDS.

SHIP WRECKAGE FOUND-ON CAM

ONCE THOUGHT TO BE LOST FOREVER--

DIVERS RECENTLY DISCOVERED A CONFEDERATE SHIP CALLED THE "PLANTER".

THE SHIP IS NEAR THE CHARLESTON HARBOR IN ABOUT 15 FEET OF SAND AND WATER.

A FORMER SLAVE FOUND FREEDOM BY USING THE SHIP.

RAYMOND OWENS HAS HIS STORY. Return to index of stories...

SHIP WRECKAGE FOUND-PKG

ON MAY THE 12TH, 1862, SMALLS HELPED SEVERAL OTHER SLAVES AND SOME FAMILY MEMBERS GET ON THE PLANTER AT ABOUT THREE OR FOUR IN THE MORNING.

"they steamed out into the harbor as if they were going to work as they normally did, Smalls had the captains struck head on, kept his back to the centenaries at Fort Sumter and the other fortifications."

"Smalls then guided the Planter passed Fort Sumter and out to the Union blockade just outside Charleston Harbor."

THANKS TO SMALLS, THE SHIP WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE UNION, AND AFTER THE CIVIL WAR, SMALLS WOULD GO ON TO SERVE IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATEHOUSE.

HE EVENTUALLY WENT ON TO BE A CONGRESSMAN, THE FIRST BLACK REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN FROM SOUTH CAROLINA.

BUT THE PLANTER REMAINED DEAR TO HIS HEART.

"Even when Smalls was in congress, when he heard that Planter had been lost and was repeated to have said he felt like he had lost a member of his family."

SMALLS WOULD PROBABLY SMILE AT THE THOUGHT THAT HIS OLD FAMILY MEMBER HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN FOUND. Return to index of stories...
