RAIN CHANCES CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY

We've got one more soggy weather day across Southwest Florida before things start to quiet down and clear out just in time for the weekend.

Onshore flow through the mid-day hours will keep the door open for showers washing in from the Gulf, and some of this activity will be heavy at times.

Through the rest of the day, the best rain chances will tend to shift deeper inland, especially by the late afternoon and evening hours.

We'll keep plenty of warmth and heat around today as temperatures peak in the middle to upper 80s by the early afternoon.

The good news for those wanting a little relief from the heat and humidity is we have a cool front scheduled to slide through the area late tonight into Friday morning, which will give us a considerable drop in humidity along with a slight dip in temperatures.

Our sky turns sunnier as we go through our Friday, and we'll also notice that drop in humidity as winds become more northerly. Friday's high temperatures will still be warm, but we'll stay out of the 90s at least with daytime temps topping out in the mid 80s.

Our weather looks phenomenal for the upcoming weekend; it'll be sunny and less humid with highs only in the mid to upper 80s! Overnights and early mornings will be cooler, too, with temps dropping down to the low 60s. Return to index of stories...

STOCK MARKETS HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED THIS WEEK WITH THE S&P 500 FALLING THE BETTER PART OF 2 PERCENT IN THE PAST TWO DAYS

NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE FROM THE NOLTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP TO DISCUSS WHAT'S DRIVING STOCKS AND BOND YIELDS ARE LOWER?

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

· It hasn't been the prettiest two days in the market but we need to remember that the stock market doesn't behave in a vacuum and there are a whole lot of variables that influence investor behavior and hence the direction of the market. And right now, I would say there are three areas of concern that are driving the prices of stocks lower.

· First, economic growth here in the US is still modest at best and not all indicators are positive or trending higher. And there seems to be a disconnect between the US stock market being at all-time highs and lower than average economic growth here in the United States. I think this anomaly has investors a little puzzled and a bit uneasy perhaps with the current valuation of the stock market.

· Second, stocks are being pressured by global growth concerns mainly in China and in Europe. And these are big economies. Together, China and Europe make up roughly 30% of the world economy and a downturn in either one or both of these economic powers could drag down world markets.

· Third, it's now been over been over two years since we've seen any correction to speak of in the markets. In fact, the next correction to happen in the US markets has been the most anticipated correction that hasn't happened. We need to remember, that corrections are a normal part of the stock market cycle and perhaps some of the concerns we are seeing right now in regard to US and global growth could be enough to push stocks into a healthy correction. This would not necessarily be a bad thing.

· Now, why are yields so much lower than they were at the beginning of the year? Well, with concerns over global growth, there is a flight from riskier assets like stocks to the safer havens of cash, treasuries, and bonds. The very low interest rate environment has also been supported by the Federal Reserves continued loose monetary policies. Since the beginning of the year, the yield on the 10 year treasury has fallen by one half of a percent which has driven the price of bonds quite a bit higher. In fact, bonds in general have significantly outperformed stocks in the first half of the year with the Barclay's Aggregate Bond Index up roughly 3.5% and long term municipal and corporate bonds up roughly 10%.

· So what to do now. With stocks pulling back and interest rates having fallen, here a few things I would recommend right now. First, review your portfolio and make sure you're comfortable with your equity exposure and downside risk in the event we do see a correction.

· Second, review your fixed income holdings, particularly the longer maturity positions. Just as you have seen the value of your longer maturity bonds rise significantly here in the past four months, you will also see them fall again when interest rates reverse their trend and go higher again.

· And third, if you though you missed the boat on getting a mortgage or some other type of loan at a very low interest rate, we may get another chance with the ten year treasury now under 2.5%.

· Call your financial advisor today to discuss how you can guard against a correction and also take advantage of the current low interest rates. Return to index of stories...

We don't want handouts, we don't want pity, we just want everyone to understand our reality.

A RALLYING CRY FOR HIGHER PAY FOR FAST FOOD WORKERS, RINGING OUT AGAIN.

AND THEY'RE HITTING THE PROTEST LINES THURSDAY.

"People united, we'll never be defeated!"

THEIR DEMAND?HIGHER PAY.

THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE CURRENTLY STANDS AT $7.25 AN HOUR.

THE SAME LEVEL IT'S BEEN AT SINCE 2009.

WORKERS WANT IT RAISED TO $15 AN HOUR.

Workers are saying look, we've been working hard, we've been working longer hours, we're more productive than we were several decades ago. But it hasn't paid off in terms of higher wages and so with our backs against the wall, workers are saying the next step is to walk off the job, to organize.

IT'S ON THE WHITE HOUSE'S PLATE TOO.

PRESIDENT OBAMA WANTS TO RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE TO $10.10 AN HOUR.

IT'S ALREADY RISING TO THAT LEVEL FOR NEW GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS.

BUT IT'S A CONTENTIOUS ISSUE WHEN IT COMES TO APPROVING IT FOR ALL WORKERS. ONE THAT CONGRESS IS DRAGGING ITS FEET ON.

At the federal level, for example, we have lobbies like the restaurant industry, like the retail industry, companies like Wal-Mart, McDonald's that devote an incredible amount of resources to influencing and blocking any minimum wage increases. And so elected officials often find themselves divided between the message they're hearing from their voters and message they're hearing from their funders.

EVEN WARREN BUFFETT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

That's the toughest question you could ask me because I've thought about it for 50 years and I don't know the answer on it.

CRITICS OF THE WAGE HIKES SAY ITS A SIMPLE FORMULA: HIGHER WAGES EQUALS LESS CORPORATE PROFITS EQUALS FEWER JOBS. FORMER HEWLETT-PACKARD CEO CARLY FIORINA SAYS THERE'S A BIG DOWNSIDE AS AMERICANS STRUGGLE TO GET BACK TO WORK.

Here's the truth about the minimum wage. It will help some people who already have a job. It will hurt people who do not have jobs.

WITH FEDERAL PROGRESS AT A STAND-STILL. SOME STATES HAVE TAKEN MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS.

13 STATES RAISED THEIR MINIMUM WAGE AT THE START OF THE YEAR.

AND SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE TAKEN ACTION SINCE.

IN THE MEANTIME, WORKERS CONTINUE TO RALLY. AND HOPE THAT FEDERAL LAWMAKERS, MAKE A MOVE SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

Historically what we've seen is that, when cities and states start passing minimum wage increases, that provides a central force of momentum for Congress to follow suit as well. Return to index of stories...

CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE CONTINUES TO BE A HUGE PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY- IT'S ONE OF THE MOST COMMON REASONS PEOPLE ARE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL.

TURNS OUT MANY STAYS CAN BE AVOIDED, WITH PROPER HEALTH MANAGEMENT.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

ABOUT 6 MILLION AMERICANS ARE LIVING WITH A FAILING HEART. FOR MANY IT'S A STRUGGLE. CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE SENDS MORE THAN ¾ OF A MILLION PEOPLE TO THE HOSPITAL EACH YEAR. ACCOUNTING FOR MORE VISITS THAN ALL THE CANCERS COMBINED. IT IS ALSO A TOP CAUSE FOR RETURN TRIPS.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:48 Readmission for heart failure nationally run 25 to 30% within 30 days. Quite often we can identify reasons for readmissions such as inability or unwillingness to fill prescriptions. 2:11: Dietary issues or habits, eating large amount of food that could be high in sodium. Or alcohol consumption.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The term congestive heart failure means the heart is failing to do it's job. Not pumping enough blood to meet the body's needs. Sudden weight gain, swelling, wheezing and fatigue are signs of trouble- Without close monitoring, the condition is easy to mismanage.

DR. RICHARD CHAZAL/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:35: Each time a patient is brought into a hospital we bring all our resources to bear on patients to try and make sure they're on the right medication, but they also have the right support system once they go home.

ONE ASPECT OF KEEPING HEART FAILURE PATIENTS HEALTHY, INVOLVES LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM'S TELEHEALTH PROGRAM. A REMOTE MONITORING SYSTEM, PEOPLE CHECK IN DAILY WITH A SERIES OF TESTS.

CATHY BRADY/CLINICAL MANAGER

RUNS:

:44 They may have gained three pounds overnight and that's too much weight gain because the more you gain, the more your heart has to pump fluid around. So if we can catch it on the front end and maybe give them an extra diuretic to get that fluid off of them, that would keep them out of the hospital.

KEEPING CLOSE WATCH-CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE, PROVIDING JUST ENOUGH SUPPORT TO KEEP HEART PATIENTS HOME. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

BUMPER STICKER WARNING-PKG

ALLAN HARNAGE IS A HUGE GATOR FAN, BUT BESIDES SHOWING HIS WHOLE FAMILY BLEEDS BLUE AND ORANGE, HE'S ALSO LETTING PEOPLE KNOW HOW MANY FAMILY MEMBERS HE HAS AND WHAT KIND OF PETS, THROUGH HIS FAMILY CAR DECAL.

"I haven't really thought about it. with the stickers of the dogs there I'm hoping it might tell them to stay away"

BUT LAW ENFORCEMENT SAYS IT INVITES CRIMINALS. THE PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE POSTED THIS ON FACEBOOK TO WARN RESIDENTS - SOON OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES BEGAN TO SHARE IT. THEY SAY DECALS LIKE THIS TELL PEOPLE - DAD IS IN THE MILITARY AND IS GONE A LOT - MOM IS ALONE WITH THE KIDS - AND THERE'S A PET BUT IT'S NOT A GUARD DOG.

"it's maybe got me thinking maybe I should take them off"

KATHLEEN WIGGINS HAS A BUMPER STICKER ON HER CAR LETTING EVERYONE KNOW THERE'S A MARINE IN HER FAMILY - AND IS PROBABLY NOT HOME A LOT.

"that does really worry me I never thought about anything like that"

AND BUMPER STICKERS ABOUT WHERE YOUR KID GOES TO SCHOOL IS ANOTHER WAY TO LET PEOPLE KNOW WHERE YOU DROP YOUR KIDS OFF- IF YOU'RE KIDS ARE INVOLVED IN SPORTS- YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT HOME IN THE AFTERNOONS. LIKE JULIE MADDOX WHO HAS A STICKER OF HER LITTLE FOOTBALL PLAYER # 10.

"my mother in law has brought that up to me and I actually bought her one and she stuck it on the inside of her car for fear of that"

THE FBI REPORTS THAT IN 2012 THERE WERE OVER 2 MILLION BURGLARIES IN THE US - ALMOST 75 PERCENT WERE RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES. IT'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT - BUT OTHERS SAY THEY ARE NOT TOO WORRIED ABOUT A LITTLE STICKER PRIDE. Return to index of stories...
