FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A stretch of dry weather"

Thanks to sunny skies, thermometer readings are already climbing into the lower half of the 80s. Through the afternoon just a few more fair weather clouds will be moving in from the east, otherwise plan on a mostly sunny day. Expect daytime highs to climb near 90° area wide with readings near the coast staying slightly cooler. Winds will remain breezy through the day with gusts near 20 to 25 mph.

As we head into the evening hours, mainly clear skies will persist and temperatures will settle into the upper 70s just after sunset. Quiet weather will return once again tonight with temperatures slowly falling into the middle 60s by tomorrow morning.

As high pressure remains the dominant feature in our forecast, not much will change as we head into Wednesday and beyond. Expect mostly to partly sunny skies tomorrow afternoon with a breeze out of the east. Daytime highs will top out in the upper 80s to lower 90s, with lows in the middle to upper 60s. Winds will become more southerly by mid week and as a result, our humidity values will begin to creep back up. A mainly dry pattern will hold through the end of the work week with afternoon highs reaching the lower 90s.

Overall, the upcoming holiday weekend looks to be in good shape. We'll see a mix of sun and clouds with a couple of afternoon isolated showers on Sunday and Monday. Return to index of stories...

GOLD HAS BEEN A DISAPPOINTMENT FOR INVESTORS OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS.

HOWEVER - THE MARKET FOR GOLD *STARTED THE YEAR VERY POSITIVELY.

JIM NOLTE, FROM NOLTE WEALTH MANAGEMENT IS WITH US TODAY TO TALK ABOUT THE GOLD MARKET.

SO JIM - IS THIS THE TIME TO BUY, SELL OR HOLD? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLAS-(4)CG

· So the question is, has gold lost its luster?

· Gold has been regarded as a valuable asset for all time.

· In modern times, gold has been regarded as an inflation hedge and as a currency hedge.

· As the stock market moved higher in 2013 we saw the price of gold begin to drop.

· In December we saw a turnaround in the price of gold.

· Gold peaked in mid-March of this year and since March we seen a 6% drop in price.

· Some money managers had hoped there would be a bounce in gold prices in 2014 and there would be a sustained recovery.

· For the last several years gold bugs have been very disappointed.

· As a matter of fact the price of gold is down 31.5% from its all-time high of nearly $1900 set in August 2011.

· The decline in the price of gold this year shows how desperate investors are for returns.

· In past years, worries about inflation and Europe's debt problems convinced gold investors that the precious metal would hold its value during a financial crisis.

· Investors piled into gold after the financial crisis. The belief was that gold would hold its value even if stocks and bonds were losing value.

· Gold kept rising over the next few years as central banks began financial stimulus programs

· this unprecedented financial stimulus weakened currencies and increased inflation fears

· yet, more than five years after the financial meltdown, inflation remains tame in the United States, while deflation is actually a possibility in the euro zone.

· Governments are moving to end their easy money policies, which tends to reduce gold's appeal as an inflation hedge.

· As the global economy continues to recover and inflation worries have been put on hold, investors believe that there are better returns in the stock market

· another issue for the gold market is declining demand for the precious metal.

· In the past, China and India have had a huge appetite for the precious metal. An association of Hong Kong jewelers said last week that demand for gold in China has fallen 30% from last year.

· I think gold will always have its fans. As global governments continue to print money, at some point, the value of those currencies will decline.

· The argument has always been that gold will always have value.

· How often have we seen an advertisement about buying gold coins, when gold is compared to waterfront property - they're not making anymore.

· From an investment point of view with a 30% decline from the all time high of $1900 per ounce set in August 2011, gold could be a buy at these levels

· personally, I think if you own gold today and it represents less than 10% of your investment portfolio you should hold on.

· Patient investors should be rewarded. The key here is patience, because, for the foreseeable future there isn't a good reason that the price of gold will be going up anytime soon. Return to index of stories...

NEW CONCERNS, THIS AFTERNOON, ABOUT THE RECALL OF NEARLY TWO MILLION POUNDS OF GROUND BEEF.

ERIKA EDWARDS EXPLAINS THE RISK. Return to index of stories...

BEEF RECALL-PKG

THE WOLVERINE PACKING COMPANY IN DETROIT IS RECALLING 1.8 MILLION POUNDS OF GROUND BEEF POTENTIALLY TAINTED WITH E-COLI BACTERIA.

"This strain of E. coli is one of the most hazardous."

ELEVEN PEOPLE IN FOUR STATES BECAME ILL WITH THE SEVERE STOMACH ILLNESS AFTER EATING GROUND BEEF IN RESTAURANTS.

"It's infrequent that we have a major outbreak from E. coli these days but when it happens, it's very serious, and it can land quite a number of its victims in the hospital."

THIS TIME -- MORE THAN HALF TO BE HOSPITALIZED.

"$12.06"

THE MEAT WAS NOT SOLD IN GROCERY STORES OR USED IN THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM. IT WOULD NOW BE EXPIRED, BUT THE CONCERN IS THAT SOME RESTAURANTS MAY HAVE FROZEN THE BEEF FOR LATER USE.

IN A STATEMENT, THE COMPANY SAID NONE OF ITS PRODUCTS TESTED POSITIVE FOR E-COLI. BUT THAT IT WAS STEPPING UP EFFORTS TO MAKE SURE ITS "SAFETY STANDARDS EXCEED CUSTOMERS' EXPECTATIONS."

GROUND BEEF IS ON THE MENU FOR MANY THIS MEMORIAL DAY.

EVEN THOUGH THE RECALLED BEEF WAS -NOT- SOLD IN STORES. FOOD SAFETY EXPERTS REMIND CONSUMERS TO COOK BEEF TO AN INTERNAL TEMPERATURE OF 160 DEGREES TO KILL BACTERIA. THE COLOR OF THE MEAT ISN'T ALWAYS RELIABLE.

"Sometimes ground beef can even turn brown before it gets to 160 degrees, so the safest way to be sure is a meat thermometer."

ANY MEAT -- RAW OR COOKED -- SHOULD NOT BE LEFT OUT FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR OR TWO -- ESPECIALLY DURING HOT SUMMER COOKOUTS.

Veteran Republican Sen. Thad Cochran, in the fight for his political life against conservative state Sen. Chris McDaniel, has found HIS bedridden wife now part of the campaign.

Police say conservative blogger and avid McDaniel supporter Clayton Thomas Kelly entered a nursing home and photographed Cochran's wife Rose, who suffers from advanced dementia. Police say Kelly later posted that photo online.

TO SEE AUDREY WALSTON MOVE TODAY, YOU'D NEVER GUESS HOW FAR SHE'S COME.

AUDREY WALSTON/HAS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

RUNS:

2:43 It was painful to walk, to move, to put a shoe on. It got that I couldn't wear shoes because the foot had got quite deformed.

AUDREY HAS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS. AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE, IT ATTACKS THE JOINTS THROUGHOUT THE BODY.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/ORTHOPEDIC FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

1:06 And by doing that, it creates a lot of swelling, inflammation, pain. And that creates deformity if it left unchecked.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO AUDREY- HER HANDS AND FEET WERE ESPECIALLY HARD HIT.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/ORTHOPEDIC FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

01:27 It can affect the feet where the toes and the joints of the feet collapse or dislocate or angulate, usually in an outward appearance.

RUNS:

HER FEET WERE SO OUT OF JOINT….

RUNS:

AUDREY COULD BARELY FUNCTION. THE PAIN WAS UNBEARABLE.

AUDREY WALSTON/HAS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

RUNS:

3:18 I was ready to chop a leg off if that would've taken some of the pain away or improved my quality of life.

THAT'S WHEN SHE MADE HER WAY TO AN ORTHOPEDIC FOOT SURGEON.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/ORTHOPEDIC FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

19:10 She was in bad shape. She came in with a kind of 'walking on the ankles' and really severe everted, flat-foot type problem.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

By the time rheumatoid arthritis patients seek out surgery, they've usually been on medications for many years. Being a progressive disease, the joints are damaged over time. Doctors may use several surgical techniques from tendon lengthening to joint fusion to rebuild the foot from the ground up.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/ORTHOPEDIC FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

18:03 We did some minimal invasive things up near her toes because the joints were not too, too far gone. 19:49 In the end we did multiple fusions and we used internal hardware to hold it in place. And she did very well.

HER FEET LOOK MUCH BETTER, BUT IT'S NOTHING COMPARED TO HOW SHE FEELS.

AUDREY WALSTON/HAS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
