:52-:57 Hollie Hojek NBC @530

THE BUCCS ARE BACK!

TODAY- LEE COUNTY, THE CITY OF FORT MYERS AND EDISON STATE COLLEGE

SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE MAKING IT OFFICIAL.

THE CITY OF PALMS PARK IS THE NEW HOME TO THE COLLEGE'S BASEBALL AND

SOFTBALL TEAMS.

OVER THE NEXT TEN YEARS-

EDISON STATE COLLEGE WILL LEASE THE CITY STADIUM FOR A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS.

Jeff Allbritten, President Edison State College

:21:01 its truly one of those historic days.

You will always remember where you were at.

:03

EDISON IS ALREADY MAKING HISTORY -- SOON TO BE KNOWN AS FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE.

THE SCHOOL'S PRESIDENT SAYS ADDING SPORTS AT THE CITY OF PALMS PARK IS SURE TO PUT THE COLLEGE ON THE MAP.

Jeff Allbritten, EDISON STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT

:22;02 this is an institution that is truly on the move.

IT'S BEEN AT LEAST TWO YEARS SINCE THE RED SOX LEFT CITY OF PALMS FOR JETBLUE PARK.

IT'S BEEN TEN TIMES THAT LONG-- ALMOST 20 YEARS SINCE EDISON STATE

COLLEGE HAD ANY SPORTS TEAMS.

Jeff Allbritten,President

:22:08 we are an institution that was a community college, now, we

are a college in this community. we are an institution that is growing

and expanding, we have dorms, we have international programs, we have

music programs, theatre programs.:10

butt sot/

:22:22Now we have athletics and it gives people something else to cheer for.:03

HOLLIE HOJEK STAND UP

:28:22 now in addition to the lease for 24-thousand dollars a year

over the next ten years- the county will also collect some of the

money from ticket sales and concession stands.

Brian Hamman, Lee County Commissioner

:17:42 this is a win win. Otherwise this stadium would be largely

underutilized. So this is great to have baseball being played here

again.

:07

THE COLLEGE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY UPGRADES AT THE STADIUM.

ALLBRITTEN SAYS THE ONLY IMMEDIATE UPGRADES THEY WILL NEED TO MAKE IS

CONVERT A BASEBALL FIELD TO A SOFTBALL FIELD.

NOW THAT IT HAS THE PARK-

IT NEEDS SOME PLAYERS.

Carl Mcaloose, Athletic Director Edison State

:23:49 its a great start for us. It adds credibility instantly and I

think what it does, is show that the county and the country we mean

business and we're going to be able to compete on a national basis.

/butt sot

:24:49 i think a student athlete would be crazy not to come to florida

southwestern.

ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE SO MANY BUCCANEER FANS!

"go buccs!"

Brian Hamman, Lee Co. Commissioner

:18:34 the new colors and the new logo for FSW are growing on me! Im

going to be a proud bucc fan going forward!

NOT EVERYONE IN LEE COUNTY BUYS INTO THE OLD SAYING LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS THE STREET.

SOT - Kyprese Lavon Milledge - Pedestrian - 15:34 what if you were to go down about a half mile to the traffic light, has that ever crossed your mind to do that to cross? To tell you the truth, no. 15:45

OTHERS BELIEVE THIS REAL LIFE GAME OF FROGGER IS NO JOKE.

SOT - Cristian Rodriguez - Pedestrian - 15:00 when you look out there and you see that kid right there sitting out on the bike, what do you think? Stupid, it's pretty stupid, he could get run over, look at that. 15:08

163 PEDISTRIANS DIED IN LEE COUNTY THE LAST TEN YEARS.

THE MOST ALARMING PART OF THE REPORT RELEASED TUESDAY BY THE NATIONAL COMPLETE STREETS COALITION SHOWS PEDESTRIANS IN LEE COUNTY ARE DYING AT A RATE 71% HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

SOT - Dan Moser - Pedestrian Advocate

10:29 it's as dangerous as you make it, they put themselves in a dangerous position. 10:33

Standup - Jim Spiewak

17:19 and one of the reasons experts tell me Florida is ranked #1 and Lee county is so high is the riding and walking conditions. As you can see here on 41 there's an entire chunk of cement missing. 17:30

BUT THE COUNTY DOESN'T SIT ON THE SIDELINES.

THESE ARE RENDERINGS OF A $10.5 MILLION DOLLAR STREET PROJECT THE COUNTY IS WORKING ON THAT WILL ADD PATHS, SIDEWALKS, MEDIANS AND SHOULDERS - PUSHING WALKERS AWAY FROM BUSY ROADS.

SOT - Dan Moser - Pedestrian Advocate

07:25 we're early on in the implementation in a lot of it so we've not seen the results yet. 07:30

SAFER ROADS AND MORE AWARENESS ARE WORKS IN PROGRESS.

SOT - Kyprese Lavon Milledge

15:25 is it going to get you to change your crossing and riding patterns? oh yes it will cuz I love my life so obviously now I'll have to think about it. 16:38

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's been another sun-filled, breezy afternoon across Southwest Florida with temperatures topping out around 90 degrees.

Even with all the heat around today, it's been completely dry across the region, and that'll continue through this evening and tonight.

Expect a mainly clear sky overnight as temps cool down to the mid 60s by early Wednesday morning.

We're on track to see another sunny Wednesday with plenty of heat, but rain chances will remain out of our forecast since the atmosphere is so dry and stable.

One subtle change we'll notice Wednesday is the breeze backing off a bit, so winds won't be as gusty and blustery compared to the last several days.

Temperatures will be very warm yet seasonable for the remainder of the week with afternoon highs around 90 degrees; morning lows will drop into the mid to upper 60s through Friday.

As we had into the holiday weekend, expect increasing warmth and humidity across Southwest Florida along with plenty of sunshine.

Rain chances will stay in the "slight" category through Memorial Day, but plan on the potential for some isolated downpours during the heat of the day. Return to index of stories...

BOATING ACCIDENT FOLO-VO IN PLASMA

RECENT BOATING ACCIDENTS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA HAVE FIRST RESPONDERS WORRIED.

TODAY NBC2'S GEORGE SOLIS WENT OUT WITH THE COAST GUARD AND THE BONITA SPRINGS FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR A LOOK AT HOW THEY WORK TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS ON THE WATER. Return to index of stories...

BOATING ACCIDENT FOLO-PKG

nat

Out on the water in sunny Southwest Florida, the wide open spaces can suddenly get crowded.

In recent weeks- boating accidents near Sanibel and Captiva resulted in serious injuries.

And in Bokeelia- a deadly crash where a UF diving coach lost his life.

10:03:21 "They're big, they're heavy, and they're dangerous

Which brings us to today-

10:00:05 "Swimmer in the water, swimmer the water!"

This is a simulation of what one member of the Bonita

Springs Fire Department says is a far too common occurrence.often because of inexperienced boat drivers.

10:03:04 "it's people not paying attention, it's focus."

And owning the right equipment before ever leaving the shore.

10:01:08 " The point of this whole day is to remind people about life jackets"

According to the U.S Coast Guard, in 2012 Florida was number one in

boating death and accidents.

Drowning was reported as the most common cause of death, where the majority of

victims were not wearing life jackets.

10:01:39 "They hit a sand bar, they catch a wave wrong, there's a

steering malfunction, and someone goes into the water, without a life

jacket on there chances of being injured or a fatality is very high."

FIRST RESPONDERS KNOW WHY A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T WEAR THEM.

11:16:59 "They're uncomfortable- they're cumbersome but until

something happens you wish you had it on"

12:19:40 "the message from the coast guard- it's the device whose

importance can't be stressed enough for any boating activity- in many

cases the proper use of a life jacket can mean the difference between

life and death in case of a water emergency at the coast guard station

at FMB GS nbc2" Return to index of stories...
