FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE'RE GETTING A LOOK AT NEW PLANS FOR A HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS.

IT'S THE LAST PIECE OF A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR VISION TO REVITALIZE THE RIVER DISTRICT. ATTRACTING CONVENTIONS AND MAKING DOWNTOWN A DESTINATION SPOT.

- county leaders say it's a lot of cash when they're about to dig in

on a new budget cycle.

Take sot

Dan Adams - rotary club

It's central and it works for us.

But this aging building needs 8 million dollars in upgrades -

Nats - 2 seconds they'll drive in here to a hand entrance

Especially if fort Myers city leaders want it up to snuff with a

developer's standards- who wants to build a brand new Sheraton hotel

and attach it to the convention center of Edwards drive.

Today- redevelopment director don paight gave NBC 2 a first look at

how the 12 story building would pan out.

Nats-

6 seconds

Internally once we go in there will be a grand staircase to

Harborside. This will be a new corridor.

City leaders need help with the cash-

So they turned to lee county to split the cost.

Asking county commissioners to kick in 400k a year for ten years to

help with renovations.

While they agreed to commit the money today - County commissioner

Larry kiker is hesitant. Wanting to know more about the county's

responsibility, and where the money will come from.

400k a year continuously is a great deal of money and as you heard

today we still have a budget to deal with.

Kiker still wants to work on some of the finer print.

To have any hope of making the 53 million dollar hotel happen-- Fort

Myers mayor randy Henderson needed some sign of commitment today.

What he got- was good enough.

THIS PICTURE OF A BOB CAT ON A ROOF SAYS IT ALL --

THE FELINE'S ARE COMFORTABLE NEAR PEOPLE IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY LATELY.

Lt. Brian Jones, Charlotte Animal Control "Walking up the street in a slow pace like they own the place is not uncommon."

JUST LAST NIGHT, NEIGHBORS IN THIS PORT CHARLOTTE NEIGHBORHOOD SHARED THESE PICTURES WITH US - A BOBCAT SEEN ROAMING AROUND THEIR STREETS AND THROUGH SHEILA CROUCH'S YARD.

Sheila Crouch, Port Charlotte "When I yelled and screamed at him, he just stood there and looked at me."

WHAT SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE IS THAT BOBCATS SHOWING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COMMUNITIES, ESPECIALLY CHARLOTTE COUNTY, ISN'T ANYTHING NEW.

Lt. Brian Jones, Charlotte Animal Control "They're really a low-risk to humans, however they are in animals and they can do things unpredictable sometimes as we've seen."

NO ATTACKS ON HUMANS HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY - THERE WAS ONE RECORDED IN SARASOTA WITHIN THE LAST DECADE.

AS CHARLOTTE CONTINUES TO URBANIZE, THESE CATS ARE BEING KICKED OUT OF THEIR NATURAL HABITAT - JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, CHARLOTTE ANIMAL CONTROL REMOVED A BOBCAT THAT KEPT TRYING TO ENTER A HEALTH CLINIC THROUGH SLIDING DOORS.

Lt. Brian Jones, Charlotte Animal Control "Going down and sitting down in the lobby… that is obviously erratic behavior and we have to intervene."

Jimmy Kazlauskas, A.R.S. Trapping "They're everywhere, they've always been everywhere… running them out isn't going to make any difference."

JIMMY KAZLAUSKAS - OR "JIMMY THE TRAPPER" - HELPS ANIMAL CONTROL REMOVE ANIMALS LIKE BOBCATS FROM CONCERNED NEIGHBORHOODS - ALTHOUGH HE SAYS PEOPLE ARE OVERREACTING.

Jimmy Kazlauskas, A.R.S. Trapping "Everybody's thinking these things are like mountain lions and they're just these drastic animals that are going to kill their pets… it's not… they eat mostly rats, snakes, stuff like that."

KAZLAUSKAS RECOMMENDS A BLOWHORN TO GET RID OF THEM.

STILL, HOMEOWNERS CAN HAVE BOBCATS REMOVED AND RELOCATED BY ANIMAL CONTROL AT NO COST.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

It's been another sun-filled, breezy afternoon across Southwest Florida with temperatures topping out around 90 degrees.

Even with all the heat around today, it's been completely dry across the region, and that'll continue through this evening and tonight.

Expect a mainly clear sky overnight as temps cool down to the mid 60s by early Wednesday morning.

We're on track to see another sunny Wednesday with plenty of heat, but rain chances will remain out of our forecast since the atmosphere is so dry and stable.

One subtle change we'll notice Wednesday is the breeze backing off a bit, so winds won't be as gusty and blustery compared to the last several days.

Temperatures will be very warm yet seasonable for the remainder of the week with afternoon highs around 90 degrees; morning lows will drop into the mid to upper 60s through Friday.

As we had into the holiday weekend, expect increasing warmth and humidity across Southwest Florida along with plenty of sunshine.

Rain chances will stay in the "slight" category through Memorial Day, but plan on the potential for some isolated downpours during the heat of the day. Return to index of stories...
