BONITA SPRINGS CITY LEADERS ARE TRYING TO PUT A STOP TO A MAJOR TRAFFIC STUDY.

THEY FEAR- IT COULD RESULT IN A FLYOVER AT THE BUSY INTERSECTION OF BONITA BEACH ROAD AND U-S 41.

THEY SAY THAT WOULD HAVE A DEVASTATING IMPACT ON THE AREA

LOCAL LEADER WANTS TO STOP US 41 STUDY-PKG

05:38:22 "I think it would be a death blow to this plaza" David

MacMasters, Wags & Whiskers

Wags and Whiskers shop owner David MacMasters is unapologetic about his

disapproval.

Talks of a potential overpass overshadow his

business off Bonita Beach Road and US 41.

"Some businesses claim once this flyover on Summerlin Road many

businesses in the area struggled to survive.and in Bonita Springs

it's the same fate if a flyover goes up here at US41 and Bonita Beach

Road" George Solis

"It might be beneficial for the work, give people work in the area,

but other than that it would kind of kill what is downtown Bonita

Springs" MacMasters

The possibility of a flyover at the intersection remains just that.

Right now the state is funding a million dollar study to look at all

the options for one of the busiest intersections in Lee County

"No decisions at all regarding the kind of future project may be

coming with the study we start with a blank slate" Debbie Tower, FDOT

A slate some Bonita city leaders prefer to stay flat for the time being.

"If you don't plan today you can't solve the problems of tomorrow" Ben

Nelson, Bonita Springs Mayor

Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson while independently supportive of the

study- voted against it earlier this year and voiced the opposition as

a member of the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization to

reflect the city's stance.

"I'm not going to damage this city, I'm not going to do it" Nelson

For the time being- the 18 month study will go on as scheduled

"Many options are under consideration during a study and we've only

just begun this study" Tower. Return to index of stories...

LOCAL LEADER WANTS TO STOP US 41 STUDY-REM LIVE

MPO OFFICIALS ALSO SAY UNLESS THERE IS A VOTE- THE STUDY WILL KEEP GOING.

SOME BUSINESS HOPE- IF THAT'S THE CASE MORE OPTIONS LIKE A ROUNDABOUT

OR WIDER LANES BECOME A HIGHER PRIORITY.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.TOASTY FINISH TO THE WORK WEEK

Clear conditions are expected to continue across Southwest Florida on Thursday evening. Overnight temperatures are anticipated to cool back only into the upper 60s for the urban corridor, with numbers closer to 70 for communities along the Gulf coast.

The easterly wind flow dominating the peninsula this week will continue weakening as we close out the work week. That should permit a sea breeze from the west to develop along the Gulf once again on Friday afternoon. The breeze should keep coastal areas a touch cooler with highs topping out in the upper 80s.

Temperatures on Friday will reach back into the low 90s for cities along the I-75 corridor.

The pleasant weather pattern we've been in featuring low humidity levels for mid and late May will begin to change a bit as we approach the weekend. More humidity can be expected by Saturday and Sunday, with slightly higher rain chances as well. At this time it appears the risk of a few isolated p.m. showers or storms is only around 20% for both days of the weekend, and greatest for inland areas of the state.

For Memorial Day planning, the weather setup appears rather typical for Southwest Florida. All indications point to the day being hot and humid with an isolated chance for rain, once again mainly east of I-75. Return to index of stories...
