THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE JUST RELEASED A LIST OF STORES IN 9 STATES THAT MAY HAVE RECEIVED SHIPMENTS OF THE BEEF CONTAMINATED WITH E-COLI.

THE BACTERIA PRODUCES A TOXIN THAT CAUSES SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN, KIDNEY DAMAGE --

AND IN SOME CASES -- EVEN DEATH.

OFFICIALS SAY NONE OF THE 11 PEOPLE SICKENED SO FAR BY THIS LATEST OUTBREAK HAVE DIED.

INVESTIGATORS TRACED THE BAD MEAT BACK TO WOLVERINE PACKING COMPANY IN DETROIT.

ALL BUT ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO GOT SICK ATE AT A RESTAURANT SUPPLIED BY WOLVERINE.

BUT FEDERAL OFFICIALS ARE *NOT* NAMING THE RESTAURANTS --

AND A CONSUMER WATCHDOG THINKS THAT'S GOTTA CHANGE.

"This is going to make things a little more dicey in terms of consumers who may get sick and don't know what to do or are not following this issue closely enough to make the connection between their illness and where they ate."

A TOP RANKING U-S-D-A OFFICIAL SAYS IT'S AGAINST REGULATIONS TO DISCLOSE RESTAURANT NAMES.

"People who were exposed, have already been exposed. So it doesn't help the public to tell them now that a certain restaurant was associated with these illnesses. Our job really is to identify a product that might still be available. "

HE SAYS FEDERAL OFFICIALS DISCLOSE THE NAMES OF GROCERY STORES AND OTHER RETAILERS BECAUSE CUSTOMERS COULD STILL HAVE MEAT THEY BOUGHT SITTING IN THEIR FREEZERS.

BUT RESTAURANTS AREN'T GOING TO SERVE TAINTED BURGERS ONCE THE MEAT IS RECALLED. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

OASTY FINISH TO THE WORK WEEK

Clear conditions are expected to continue across Southwest Florida on Thursday evening. Overnight temperatures are anticipated to cool back only into the upper 60s for the urban corridor, with numbers closer to 70 for communities along the Gulf coast.

The easterly wind flow dominating the peninsula this week will continue weakening as we close out the work week. That should permit a sea breeze from the west to develop along the Gulf once again on Friday afternoon. The breeze should keep coastal areas a touch cooler with highs topping out in the upper 80s.

Temperatures on Friday will reach back into the low 90s for cities along the I-75 corridor.

The pleasant weather pattern we've been in featuring low humidity levels for mid and late May will begin to change a bit as we approach the weekend. More humidity can be expected by Saturday and Sunday, with slightly higher rain chances as well. At this time it appears the risk of a few isolated p.m. showers or storms is only around 20% for both days of the weekend, and greatest for inland areas of the state.

For Memorial Day planning, the weather setup appears rather typical for Southwest Florida. All indications point to the day being hot and humid with an isolated chance for rain, once again mainly east of I-75. Return to index of stories...
