TOSS TO JIM-OC-TURN 2 SHOT, TRX

WE BEGIN WITH AN NBC2 EXCLUSIVE:

TEN CATHOLIC PRIESTS GO ON THE RECORD CALLING THE BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF VENICE A BULLY WHO RELIES ON INTIMIDATION AND FEAR.

AND THAT'S JUST BEGINNING OF A LIST OF COMPLAINTS NOW ON THE WAY TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

THE PRIESTS SENT A LETTER TO THE POPE'S LIASON. WITH MAJOR CONCERNS OVER BISHOP FRANK DEWANE.

NBC-2 INVESTIGATOR JIM SPIEWAK IS THE ONLY REPORTER WITH THAT LETTER. AND THE STARTLINE ALLEGATIONS LEVELED AGAINST THE BISHIP.

HE'S IN THE STUDIO WITH THE STORY YOU'LL ONLY SEE ON NBC-2. Return to index of stories...

CATHOLIC DIOCESE COMPLAINT-PLASMA

THAT'S RIGHT -

TO BE CLEAR WE'VE DECIDED NOT TO NAME THE TEN PRIESTS WHO SIGNED THE LETTER -- POTENTIALLY PUTTING THEIR CAREERS ON THE LINE.

BUT MY SOURCES TELL ME ALMOST HALF OF THE PRIESTS AND PASTORS IN THE 70-PARRISH VENICE DIOCESE AGREE WITH SOME OR ALL OF THIS LETTER -- WHICH ALLEGES FINANCIAL WOES, HARASSMENT AND BULLYING TACTICS. Return to index of stories...

CATHOLIC DIOCESE COMPLAINT-BNR-PKG

TEN PRIESTS AND PASTORS SAY THE SITUATION IN THE VENICE DIOCESE UNDER BISHOP FRANK DEWANE'S LEADERSHIP HAS BECOME QUOTE "INTOLERABLE."

IN A LETTER SENT IN JANUARY TO THE POPE'S AIDE, THEY CLAIM BISHOP DEWANE LACKS FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY. THEY CITE EXAMPLES OF EXCESSIVE, UNMONITORED SPENDING OF DIOCESAN FUNDS.

THE GROUP ALSO CLAIMS BISHOP DEWANE IS VIOLATING CANON LAW -- USING INTIMIDATION, FEAR AND BULLYING TACTICS.

THE LETTER GOES ON TO SAY THE BISHOP GOT RID OF SEVERAL GROUPS REQUIRED BY CANON LAW THAT ASSIGN PRIESTS AND DEACONS -- SAYING INSTEAD, BISHOP DEWANE MAKES THOSE DECISIONS ON HIS OWN.

THURSDAY, I REACHED OUT TO MORE THAN 30 CATHOLICS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA FOR RESPONSE TO THE LETTER. ALL BUT TWO DECLINED TO SPEAK ON CAMERA.

Sot - Susan Cowart - Catholic

41:24 I don't know if anything will be done about it, I tend to think probably not but. 41:30

SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS, SOME IN THE DIOCESE SAY CAN'T BE SWEPT UNDER THE RUG.

SOT -

42:06 I would like to see it investigated. 42:08

SOT - Melissa Cowart - Catholic

42:52 I think being that it's ten people and not just one that it should be investigated and I'm sure there are other people out there that didn't want to get involved. 43:02

THE LETTER WAS SENT TO THE POPE'S AIDE ON JANUARY 17TH, MORE THAN 4 MONTHS AGO.

THE GROUP HAS YET TO HEAR BACK.

SOT - Melissa Cowart - Catholic

43:18 does it make you wonder who do you trust? I don't trust anybody just for that reason. 43:22 Return to index of stories...

CATHOLIC DIOCESE COMPLAINT-PLASMA

AN OFFICIAL WITH THE DIOCESE TELLS ME THEY'RE UNAWARE OF THE LETTER AND HAD NO FURTHER COMMENT.

AND YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT CHECKS AND BALANCES…

THE ONLY WAY TO REACH OUT TO THE POPE'S AIDES IS BY SNAIL MAIL. I DID SO SEVERAL WEEKS AGO AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

TOASTY FINISH TO THE WORK WEEK

Clear conditions are expected to continue across Southwest Florida on Thursday evening. Overnight temperatures are anticipated to cool back only into the upper 60s for the urban corridor, with numbers closer to 70 for communities along the Gulf coast.

The easterly wind flow dominating the peninsula this week will continue weakening as we close out the work week. That should permit a sea breeze from the west to develop along the Gulf once again on Friday afternoon. The breeze should keep coastal areas a touch cooler with highs topping out in the upper 80s.

Temperatures on Friday will reach back into the low 90s for cities along the I-75 corridor.

The pleasant weather pattern we've been in featuring low humidity levels for mid and late May will begin to change a bit as we approach the weekend. More humidity can be expected by Saturday and Sunday, with slightly higher rain chances as well. At this time it appears the risk of a few isolated p.m. showers or storms is only around 20% for both days of the weekend, and greatest for inland areas of the state.

For Memorial Day planning, the weather setup appears rather typical for Southwest Florida. All indications point to the day being hot and humid with an isolated chance for rain, once again mainly east of I-75.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
