5:00 WEATHER LEAD-WXCTR

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.HOT WEATHER THROUGH THE WEEKEND

Temperatures are starting off a bit warmer this morning than the past few mornings, and that warming trend will continue through the next few days. We'll see lots of sunshine today and just a few fair weather clouds. Afternoon highs will reach into the low to mid 90s with the beaches topping out in the mid to upper 80s. The easterly breeze will be light allowing the sea breeze to come ashore in the afternoon bringing quick cooling.

Humidity and temperatures will be higher through the weekend. Morning lows will be in the lower 70s and afternoon highs will reach into the low to mid 90s for inland locations with the beaches staying in the mid to upper 80s each afternoon. There will be an isolated chance for a shower through the weekend into the beginning of next week. Coverage of rain will only reach about 20% and the best chance to see that shower will be aimed toward the inland areas.

That same hot, humid pattern with an isolated rain chance will continue for Memorial Day. We'll keep you updated, but right now, I wouldn't go changing any of your holiday plans. Return to index of stories...

IT HAPPENED AT THIS CONDO COMPLEX LAST MONTH.

SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS CAPTURED THE MOMENT WHEN 5-YEAR-OLD DANNIELLA GAMEZ GRABBED A RAILING, THEN SUDDENLY WENT LIMP.

SECONDS LATER, HER FRANTIC FATHER PULLED HER OUT.

BUT DANIELLA'S TEN-YEAR-OLD BROTHER,

DIEGO, WAS IN THE WATER FOR 15 SECONDS BEFORE HIS GRANDFATHER MANAGED TO PULLED HIM TO SAFETY.

"When they grabbed onto the metal railing that's when they got the shock and they just - they were paralyzed."

THE BROTHER, SISTER AND ANOTHER CHILD WHO WAS SHOCKED ALL SURVIVED.

CITY INSPECTORS SAY BAD WIRING WAS LIKELY THE CAUSE.

JUST TWO WEEKS EARLIER --- ALSO IN MIAMI -- 7-YEAR-OLD CALDER SLOAN DIED WHEN HE WAS ELECTROCUTED IN HIS OWN FAMILY POOL.

POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING WHETHER A FAULTY POOL LIGHT IS TO BLAME.

"They found the ground cable wasn't hooked up. So, essentially, Calder became the ground. So, electricity, instead of traveling to the ground, traveled through his body."

EXPERTS SAY IT'S A FRIGHTENING REMINDER OF WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN WATER COMES INTO CONTACT WITH ELECTRICITY.

"Too often, the only thing protecting swimmers from the electrical wiring is a pane of glass and a rubber seal. If that goes bad and the wiring is corroded, it could be deadly."

THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION REPORTS AT LEAST 13-people DIED IN POOL ELECTROCUTIONS OVER A RECENT 9-year PERIOD.

Tom: "You gotta make sure that's grounded properly!"

Alan: "Not only that, but also make sure the electrical equipment is a safe distance away from the pool and that the pool is properly maintained so there's no corrosion on the wires."

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT SHOULD ALSO COME WITH A KILL SWITCH, AND ANYTHING THAT COULD BE USED AS A RESCUE POLE SHOULD BE MADE OF FIBERGLASS OR PLASTIC, NOT METAL.

BACK IN MIAMI, THE FAMILIES OF THE CHILDREN ARE GRATEFUL THEY WERE WITHIN REACH AND ALL THREE KIDS COULD BE SAVED.

SOAP FEST CHARITY WEEKEND-CGTOPS

THE SOAPFEST RETURNS TO MARCO ISLAND THIS WEEKEND.

THIS EVENT HELPS RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILIDREN'S CHARITIES.

MORE THAN A DOZEN ACTORS FROM DAYTIMES SHOWS SUCH AS ONE LIFE TO LIVE AND YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND.

THE EVENT KICKS OFF WITH THE A NIGHT OF STARS, SATURDAY, MAY 24TH AT 7PM AT BISTRO SOLEIL WITHIN THE HISTORIC OLD MARCO INN.

"This year's SoapFest children's beneficiaries include Camp Able and the Island Theater Company Kids Program, among others" says SoapFest founder Pat Berry. Camp Able provides a program for local special needs children.

"You don't have to be a soap fan to have a great time and support the kids," says Ms. Berry. "SoapFest is a great weekend that showcases Marco Island's innate hospitality amidst its white sandy beaches and waterways nearby the Gulf of Mexico to daytime drama actors and fans from around the world," she adds.

More than a dozen actors from treasured daytimes shows such as General Hospital, One Life to Live, Young and the Restless and Guiding Light are expected to attend, many for return visits. "These actors generously donate their time and talents to raise money for our kids," explains Ms. Berry.

The three days of non-stop festivities include favorites such as the legendary "A Night of Stars", "Cruisin', Boozin' and Schmoozin' with the Stars", "Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash", and "Brunch with the Boys".

SoapFest Charity Weekend kicks off with the A Night of Stars, Saturday, May 24th at 7PM at the quaint Bistro Soleil, located within the historic Old Marco Inn, 100 Palm Street. The evening's meal will be created by French born and trained, award winning Chef Denis Meurgue, well known for his unique and celebratory dinners.

This VIP event will offer several opportunities for up close and personal time with the actors. Celebrity guests from today's most popular daytime shows will join "old favorites," and be available for autograph signings, photos, Q&A, and live auctions.

A newly added feature to A Night of Stars is "Soapfest Game Night," where guests vie for prizes based upon answering trivia questions about their favorite soap stars and stories. This evening event always sells out, so tickets should be ordered promptly, advises Ms. Berry.

A Night of Stars tickets are $125 per person. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $200 and guarantees VIP seating with your favorite celebrity guest.

The fun continues on Sunday, May 25 aboard the Marco Island Princess yacht for the afternoon Cruisin' Boozin' & Schmoozin' With The Stars, to be held noon to 3 pm, departing from the Marco River Marina. The 3-hour boat ride is a perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with your favorite soap celebrity, while sightseeing Marco Island's coastal beauty as dolphins frolic in the water. Guests meet with actors for additional photographs and autographs. Raffles will be held for one-of-a-kind daytime drama memorabilia. Tickets are limited to 150 and cost $130 per person including a luncheon buffet.

The annual Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash takes place at 9:00 pm until closing following the boat cruise on Sunday evening at Porky's Bar, located at 701 Bald Eagle Drive. This cherished event features daytime actors singing favorite tunes while pouring drinks to raise money. Ticket cost is $75 per person.

SoapFest concludes on Monday, May 26th with a brand new Sponsor VIP Brunch With The Boys of Daytime. Planning for this exclusive, one-of-a-kind event is underway with a very limited number of tickets available. According to Ms. Berry, details to this inaugural event are being kept under wraps as seating is very limited and special surprise guest are being confirmed daily.

"All levels of Sponsorships are available and offer personalized marketing opportunities to local businesses and individuals who want to reach Marco Island residents and upscale visitors while supporting local children," reports Ms. Berry. Call the Soapfest office 239-394-0080 for information on sponsorships.

Tickets for all events, updates to schedules, including current actor attendees, can be found at SoapFest.com. Tickets may also be purchased by phone by calling 239-394-0080. Return to index of stories...
