6:02 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

The unofficial start to summer will live up to its name as the heat and humidity top our weather headlines through this Memorial Day Weekend across Southwest Florida.

Mostly sunny skies will send temperatures quickly into the upper 80s by noon with our daytime highs hitting the low to mid 90s during the peak heating of the day.

Despite all the heat and humidity, rain chances will remain in the "slight" category from now through Memorial Day, but it's possible for a couple of late-day, isolated downpours develop along the sea breeze. Our rain chances will stay around 20% through the weekend.

Our overnights and early mornings will stay quite warm and muggy as well with low temperatures only dropping into the low to mid 70s.

If you're planning to spend some time at the beach, our winds will be northwesterly from 10-15 mph. The water temperatures at the beaches over the weekend will range from 82-84 degrees.

For the boaters, seas will be at 2-3 feet, and our inland waters will be at a light to moderate chop.

As we head into the upcoming week, we'll keep plenty of heat and humidity in the forecast with daytime highs soaring into the low to mid 90s.

Our rain prospects will get a boost by mid week, too, so plan on the possibility for more pop-up showers and storms during the afternoon and evening time frame.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

As you fuel up for holiday weekend travel -

it's not the gas prices you need to be concerned about -

it's a growing crime called skimming.

Jessica Kellogg

Washington

35:12 35:16

People steal your identity and steal all your money and then what are you going to do?

A joint investigation in Lee County called Operation High Octane uncovered three skimming devices just today -

after deputies, cape coral police and the department of agriculture inspected 32 gas stations.

Their almost invisible - small magnetic strips -

Beth Schell

LCSO Fraud Specialist

30:32 30:35

its kind of hard to tell if a skimmers been placed on there you really don't know

But they're powerful.

The devices target customers who use their credit or debit cards at the pump.

Tim Muskgrave

Fort Myers Beach

36:47 36:51

It's just easier you don't have to go inside you don't have to wait in line you don't have to deal with people

All it takes is one swipe -

and criminals have enough information to steal your identity and your money.

Julie Murphy

33:34 33:37

Its scary when you look at your account and have nothing left

Fraud specialists recommend paying with cash instead.

But if you have to use a card - don't use debit or go inside.

Beth Schell

LCSO Fraud Specialist

30:18 30:27

if someone actually has a skimmer has placed a skimmer on a gas pump and you use your debit card that moneys going to come out of your account, its like cash

Deputies won't say where they found those three devices because the investigation is ongoing.

Those are just the latest of six skimmers found in Lee County in as many months.

In Lee County, Laura Roberts, NBC2. Return to index of stories...

SOAP FEST CHARITY WEEKEND-A-SIDE CGTOPS

SOAPFEST RETURNS TO MARCO ISLAND THIS WEEKEND.

THIS EVENT HELPS RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILIDREN'S CHARITIES.

MORE THAN A DOZEN ACTORS FROM DAYTIMES SHOWS SUCH AS GENERAL HOSPITAL AND YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND.

THERE WAS A VIP EVENT LAST NIGHT, AND TONIGHT AT 7, GAMENIGHT, WHERE YOU CAN TEST YOUR TRIVIA. TOMORROW, THERE IS A CRUISE ON THE MARCO ISLAND PRINCESS FROM NOON-3.

"This year's SoapFest children's beneficiaries include Camp Able and the Island Theater Company Kids Program, among others" says SoapFest founder Pat Berry. Camp Able provides a program for local special needs children.

"You don't have to be a soap fan to have a great time and support the kids," says Ms. Berry. "SoapFest is a great weekend that showcases Marco Island's innate hospitality amidst its white sandy beaches and waterways nearby the Gulf of Mexico to daytime drama actors and fans from around the world," she adds.

More than a dozen actors from treasured daytimes shows such as General Hospital, One Life to Live, Young and the Restless and Guiding Light are expected to attend, many for return visits. "These actors generously donate their time and talents to raise money for our kids," explains Ms. Berry.

The three days of non-stop festivities include favorites such as the legendary "A Night of Stars", "Cruisin', Boozin' and Schmoozin' with the Stars", "Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash", and "Brunch with the Boys".

SoapFest Charity Weekend kicks off with the A Night of Stars, Saturday, May 24th at 7PM at the quaint Bistro Soleil, located within the historic Old Marco Inn, 100 Palm Street. The evening's meal will be created by French born and trained, award winning Chef Denis Meurgue, well known for his unique and celebratory dinners.

This VIP event will offer several opportunities for up close and personal time with the actors. Celebrity guests from today's most popular daytime shows will join "old favorites," and be available for autograph signings, photos, Q&A, and live auctions.

A newly added feature to A Night of Stars is "Soapfest Game Night," where guests vie for prizes based upon answering trivia questions about their favorite soap stars and stories. This evening event always sells out, so tickets should be ordered promptly, advises Ms. Berry.

A Night of Stars tickets are $125 per person. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $200 and guarantees VIP seating with your favorite celebrity guest.

The fun continues on Sunday, May 25 aboard the Marco Island Princess yacht for the afternoon Cruisin' Boozin' & Schmoozin' With The Stars, to be held noon to 3 pm, departing from the Marco River Marina. The 3-hour boat ride is a perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with your favorite soap celebrity, while sightseeing Marco Island's coastal beauty as dolphins frolic in the water. Guests meet with actors for additional photographs and autographs. Raffles will be held for one-of-a-kind daytime drama memorabilia. Tickets are limited to 150 and cost $130 per person including a luncheon buffet.

The annual Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash takes place at 9:00 pm until closing following the boat cruise on Sunday evening at Porky's Bar, located at 701 Bald Eagle Drive. This cherished event features daytime actors singing favorite tunes while pouring drinks to raise money. Ticket cost is $75 per person.

SoapFest concludes on Monday, May 26th with a brand new Sponsor VIP Brunch With The Boys of Daytime. Planning for this exclusive, one-of-a-kind event is underway with a very limited number of tickets available. According to Ms. Berry, details to this inaugural event are being kept under wraps as seating is very limited and special surprise guest are being confirmed daily.

"All levels of Sponsorships are available and offer personalized marketing opportunities to local businesses and individuals who want to reach Marco Island residents and upscale visitors while supporting local children," reports Ms. Berry. Call the Soapfest office 239-394-0080 for information on sponsorships.

Tickets for all events, updates to schedules, including current actor attendees, can be found at SoapFest.com. Tickets may also be purchased by phone by calling 239-394-0080. Return to index of stories...

VALOR TO VENYARD-ON CAM

THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, AMERICANS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE FINDING WAYS TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY.

THIS MORNING, WE HAVE A STORY OF A WOUNDED VETERAN WHO, ON HIS ROAD TO RECOVERY, FOUND COMFORT AND HEALING THROUGH A UNIQUE FRIENDSHIP. AND A SHARED LOVE OF WINE.

TORY DUNNAN REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

VALOR TO VENYARD-PKG

BEHIND EVERY GOOD BOTTLE OF WINE, IS A GREAT STORY.

AND BEHIND EVERY MARINE IS AN EVEN BETTER ONE.

THIS ONE STARTS WITH TWO STRANGERS.

CORPORAL CHRISTIAN BROWN.

AND DAVID KEUHNER.

"We've been friends ever since."

A MARINE AND A WINEMAKER

"The wine is where it all started."

KEUHNER PUTS A PAIR OF BOOTS ON EVERY BOTTLE OF HONOR WINE.

"it's a wine that has a soul, it has a purpose "

A PURPOSE THAT HELPS THOSE WHO SERVE.

WHETHER HE'S AUCTIONING OFF BOTTLES TO PAY FOR THEIR PHYSICAL CARE.

DONATING PROCEEDS TO VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

OR HEALING EMOTIONAL WOUNDS.

BROWN LOST BOTH HIS LEGS WHEN HE STEPPED ON AN I-E-D IN AFGHANISTAN IN 2011.

BUT JUST DAYS EARLIER, HE PULLED FELLOW MARINE LANCE CORPORAL JACOB LEVY TO SAFETY AFTER HE'D BEEN SHOT.

LEVY WOULDN'T SURVIVE.

BUT IT WAS BROWN'S HEROIC ACT THAT WOULD CONNECT HIM WITH KEUHNER--- ALL THANKS TO LEVY'S MOTHER.

"she called our office and said can I buy a bottle of wine"

IT WAS THE BOTTLE'S LABEL THAT BROUGHT HER BACK TO HER SON.

"she started to say, those boots are my Jacob's boots. it started to hit me all at one time. those boots are jacob's and jacob isn't here anymore."

SHE WAS SO TOUCHED THAT SHE INVITED THE WINE MAKER TO BROWN'S SILVER STAR CEREMONY.

THERE, KEUHNER GAVE BROWN A BOTTLE OF HONOR WINE--- ETCHED WITH THE MEMORY OF LEVY.

"I can't bring levy back. I can't bring Brown's legs back but I know we can help"

"something so simple as wine has brought two people together"

A CONNECTION THAT'S INSPIRED A NEW WAY TO HEAL.

"It gives me the opportunity to speak with people about certain things that I've experienced through my life that I don't necessarily feel like speaking with a psychiatrist"

"what do you toast to?"

"I toast to tomorrow."

6:32 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

PUNTA GORDA CANAL-ONCAM

THERE'S A PROPOSAL IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY TO BUILD A CANAL THAT WOULD HELP BOATERS NAVIGATE PUNTA GORDA ISLES.

LUCAS SEILER TELLS US, IT MAY FINALLY HAVE THE SUPPORT TO MOVE FORWARD. Return to index of stories...

PUNTA GORDA CANAL-TRX-PKG

NAT "You can look down the canal and you can see all the lifts!"

IT'S A NEIGHBORHOOD NESTLED RIGHT ALONG THE WATER WHERE PEOPLE USE BOATS JUST ABOUT AS MUCH AS THEY USE CARS.

"That's why we purchased this property here because we could have a boat."

CARL HOMAN CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE TO TRAVEL THROUGH ANY PART OF PUNTA GORDA ISLES… TIME MANY BOATERS SAY IS WASTED.

DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE, IT COULD TAKE UP TO AN HOUR AND A HALF TO GET OUT TO CHARLOTTE HARBOR.

"This would put them out in the harbor in about 15 to 20 minutes."

JAY BUCKLEY SITS ON THE BOARD OF PUNTA GORDA'S BOATERS ALLIANCE.

THE GROUP IS RAISING ABOUT EIGHT-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF BUILDING THE CANAL. BUCKLEY SAYS IT WOULD NOT ONLY SHORTEN TRIPS, BUT HELP WITH WATERFLOW AND EVEN RAISE PROPERTY VALUE IN THE AREA.

"Realtors have stated that they've lost sales… as soon as the prospective buyer found out how long it was going to take them to get out of the water, they said no I'm not buying it."

HERE'S WHAT STANDS IN THE WAY RIGHT NOW - THIS LAND IS PRIVATELY OWNED. PUNTA GORDA IS TRYING TO GIVE THE OWNER UNUSED CITY LAND IN EXCHANGE FOR THE PROPERTY.

"Right now, it's a private effort going forward to try to do an engineer study privately funded and eventually those results depending on what they show will come back to the city council."

AFTER THAT, THE CITY WILL ASK PUNTA GORDA ISLES RESIDENTS IF THEY WANT THE CANAL - ONLY TAXPAYERS LIVING IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD WILL PAY FOR IT THROUGH MAINTENANCE FEES.

THE ESTIMATED COST IS TWO MILLION DOLLARS.

Bayshore Fire District Chief Larry Nisbet says he starting to feel the pressure

"We've exhausted all of our grant capabilities used reserves down to

the level we can't go any further down"

Nisbet says tough times have reduced the district budget by as much as

40 percent- a total loss of nearly 2 million dollars"

"We're concerned about maintaining a level of service, I have to have

4 firefighters on duty"

To combat the deficits caused by the decline in property values- which

is how the district currently funds its departments- they're proposing

a new fee.

"Under this proposal all the residential home owners will pay the

exact same amount"

A fee of 587.78 dollars per household.

Nisbet says there are proposed increases for other properties as well-

details will be fine tuned if voters pass the initial fee next month.

Some property owners are calling the fee unfair

"One question some people raise is that if you need to raise money why

are you giving basically the lowest income people a big tax increase

and the highest income people a tax cut"

Steve Brodkin represents a group concerned

residents in the community. he says they fear residents aren't fully aware of the

details.

"They need to be informed in order to make that decion to know that

there's a referendum and to know the facts are about the proposal"

If the fee is shot down in June- fire officials say they will be

forced to layoff firefighters and reduce the level of service to the

community.

"While the fate of the department will ultimately rest in the hands of

voters come June. People get still get informed on the issue at next
