GOOD MORNING-2 shot push

GOOD MORNING, THANKS for STARTING YOUR SUNDAY WITH US HERE AT NBC-2.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M CLIFTON FRENCH. IT'S A HOLIDAY WEEKEND AND WE START WITH TODAY'S FORECAST.

METEROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS STANDING BY TO TELL US WHAT WE CAN EXPECT. Return to index of stories...

6:02 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

The summer-like weather continues through the holiday weekend, and we'll even have a few more downpours to track during the afternoon and evening time frame.

After tying our record high in Fort Myers Saturday, we're set to warm back up into the low to mid 90s again today; the cooler spots will be closer to the coast with the hot spots deeper inland.

We're set to see plenty of sunshine through the day, but some patchy clouds will develop through the afternoon.

Expect to see a few more isolated downpours to develop along the sea breeze by the afternoon and evening, but the overall coverage should stay fairly spotty.

The rain that manages to develop will tend to fire up over our inland communities but may also drift back toward the coast by the evening hours.

Humidity levels will stay very high for the remainder of the weekend and will continue into the upcoming week as well.

For Memorial Day, expect more sun, heat and humidity along with a few afternoon and evening downpours. Our daytime highs will once again soar into the low to mid 90s.

As we head into the upcoming week, we'll keep plenty of heat and humidity in the forecast with highs in the low to mid 90s and overnight lows in the 70s.

Our rain chance will get a boost by mid week, too, so plan on the possibility for more pop-up showers and storms during the afternoon and evening time frame from Wednesday into next weekend.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

6:32 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

A FITTING PROCESSIONAL FOR 9-YEAR OLD FELECIA WILLIAMS, AS SHE WAS LAID TO REST AT THE ROCK CHURCH OF GOD BY FAITH.

It was bittersweet for a nine year old. You just think about your own children and have to reflect on that.

FELECIA OR SUGAR PLUM AS MANY CALLED HER WAS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL FREE AND ACCEPTED MODERN MASON AND EASTERN STARS YOUTH COURT.

THEY LINED THE CHURCH SIDEWALK BY THE DOZENS TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT.

It's always great to have this kind of outpour of love and compassion from the community. It helps but nothing replaces the loss of a child.

FELECIA WAS A 3RD GRADER AT EDISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

SHE LOVED CHEERING FOR THE JACKSON HEIGHTS VIKING CHEER SQUAD AND HAD THE ABILITY TO LIGHT UP A ROOM WITH HER SMILE ALONE.

BUT TODAY, ONLY HER MEMORY FILLED THE ROOM.

It was heart touching, it's terrible. Just to think about losing a child. We're not supposed to bury our kids, our kids are supposed to bury us.

SOAP FEST CHARITY WEEKEND-CG

THE LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND IS NOT OVER YET!

AND IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO.

HEAD TO MARCO ISLAND. FOR THE SOAPFEST.

THIS EVENT HELPS RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILIDREN'S CHARITIES.

MORE THAN A DOZEN ACTORS FROM DAYTIMES SHOWS SUCH AS GENERAL HOSPITAL AND YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND.

TODAY THERE WILL BE A CRUISE ON THE MARCO ISLAND PRINCESS FROM NOON-3.

"This year's SoapFest children's beneficiaries include Camp Able and the Island Theater Company Kids Program, among others" says SoapFest founder Pat Berry. Camp Able provides a program for local special needs children.

"You don't have to be a soap fan to have a great time and support the kids," says Ms. Berry. "SoapFest is a great weekend that showcases Marco Island's innate hospitality amidst its white sandy beaches and waterways nearby the Gulf of Mexico to daytime drama actors and fans from around the world," she adds.

More than a dozen actors from treasured daytimes shows such as General Hospital, One Life to Live, Young and the Restless and Guiding Light are expected to attend, many for return visits. "These actors generously donate their time and talents to raise money for our kids," explains Ms. Berry.

The three days of non-stop festivities include favorites such as the legendary "A Night of Stars", "Cruisin', Boozin' and Schmoozin' with the Stars", "Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash", and "Brunch with the Boys".

SoapFest Charity Weekend kicks off with the A Night of Stars, Saturday, May 24th at 7PM at the quaint Bistro Soleil, located within the historic Old Marco Inn, 100 Palm Street. The evening's meal will be created by French born and trained, award winning Chef Denis Meurgue, well known for his unique and celebratory dinners.

This VIP event will offer several opportunities for up close and personal time with the actors. Celebrity guests from today's most popular daytime shows will join "old favorites," and be available for autograph signings, photos, Q&A, and live auctions.

A newly added feature to A Night of Stars is "Soapfest Game Night," where guests vie for prizes based upon answering trivia questions about their favorite soap stars and stories. This evening event always sells out, so tickets should be ordered promptly, advises Ms. Berry.

A Night of Stars tickets are $125 per person. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $200 and guarantees VIP seating with your favorite celebrity guest.

The fun continues on Sunday, May 25 aboard the Marco Island Princess yacht for the afternoon Cruisin' Boozin' & Schmoozin' With The Stars, to be held noon to 3 pm, departing from the Marco River Marina. The 3-hour boat ride is a perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with your favorite soap celebrity, while sightseeing Marco Island's coastal beauty as dolphins frolic in the water. Guests meet with actors for additional photographs and autographs. Raffles will be held for one-of-a-kind daytime drama memorabilia. Tickets are limited to 150 and cost $130 per person including a luncheon buffet.

The annual Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash takes place at 9:00 pm until closing following the boat cruise on Sunday evening at Porky's Bar, located at 701 Bald Eagle Drive. This cherished event features daytime actors singing favorite tunes while pouring drinks to raise money. Ticket cost is $75 per person.

SoapFest concludes on Monday, May 26th with a brand new Sponsor VIP Brunch With The Boys of Daytime. Planning for this exclusive, one-of-a-kind event is underway with a very limited number of tickets available. According to Ms. Berry, details to this inaugural event are being kept under wraps as seating is very limited and special surprise guest are being confirmed daily.

"All levels of Sponsorships are available and offer personalized marketing opportunities to local businesses and individuals who want to reach Marco Island residents and upscale visitors while supporting local children," reports Ms. Berry. Call the Soapfest office 239-394-0080 for information on sponsorships.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

"You know, we judge a good year, a good year is if you have more weddings to attend than funerals."

UNFORTUNATELY FOR THOSE WHO SERVE, TRAGEDY IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE.

STILL. EVERYONE REACTS DIFFERENTLY.

"I remember when I got the news about Justin being killed, I starred at my phone for a solid 30 minutes just not being able to move"

JUSTIN, WAS SERGEANT JUSTIN HANSEN, WHO SERVED WITH FELLOW MARINE , CAPTAIN NICHOLAS KARNAZE.

KARNAZE WAS HOME WHEN HIS CLOSE FRIEND WAS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN IN 20-12.

"And so for whatever reason, I decided to grow my beard for his funeral. I like to chalk it up as a coping mechanism."

HE HAD GROWN A "WAR BEARD."

MANY MARINES SPORT THEM DURING DEPLOYMENT.

INCLUDING JUSTIN.

"he actually had a pretty strong, red beard. it was pretty aggressive. And Justin in general was just -- just, he was larger than life. He was just a big guy. And his personality matched his size and his beard."

"What would he say about your beard now?"

"Oh, he'd be jealous. Yeah, he'd like it"

GROWING THAT BEARD TAUGHT CARNAZY ALL THAT CAME WITH IT.

"most guys don't get past a certain point because it just becomes too irritating and they shave it off."

SO.HE WENT INTO BUSINESS.

THE BEARD BUSINESS.

"Did you ever think you'd kind of be the master of how to take care of a beard?"

"Yeah, going from a Marine Corps Special Operations Officer into a skin care. definitely did not see that one coming."

HE LAUNCHED STUBBLE AND 'STACHE WHICH DONATES 15 PERCENT OF PROFITS TO CHARITIES WORKING WITH COMBAT VETERANS.

CARNAZY SAYS IT'S ABOUT BUILDING AND GROWING SOMETHING WITH A PURPOSE.

"my intent with this, is to create something that will last and fund these needed endeavors all in Justin's name. Because I just do not want that to go away, and I don't want people to forget what he did"

SOMETHING THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR KARNAZY. EACH TIME HE LOOKS IN THE MIRROR.
