HELLO-WX CENTER

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH, HAPPY SUNDAY!

WE ARE IN STORE FOR SOME GOOD WEATHER THIS LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND IF YOU LIKE HOT CONDITIONS.

METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS STANDING BY IN THE WEATHER CENTER WITH MORE ON YOUR FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The summer-like weather continues through the holiday weekend, and we'll even have a few more downpours to track during the afternoon and evening time frame.

After tying our record high in Fort Myers Saturday, we're set to warm back up into the low to mid 90s again today; the cooler spots will be closer to the coast with the hot spots deeper inland.

We're set to see plenty of sunshine through the day, but some patchy clouds will develop through the afternoon.

Expect to see a few more isolated downpours to develop along the sea breeze by the afternoon and evening, but the overall coverage should stay fairly spotty.

The rain that manages to develop will tend to fire up over our inland communities but may also drift back toward the coast by the evening hours.

Humidity levels will stay very high for the remainder of the weekend and will continue into the upcoming week as well.

For Memorial Day, expect more sun, heat and humidity along with a few afternoon and evening downpours. Our daytime highs will once again soar into the low to mid 90s.

As we head into the upcoming week, we'll keep plenty of heat and humidity in the forecast with highs in the low to mid 90s and overnight lows in the 70s.

Our rain chance will get a boost by mid week, too, so plan on the possibility for more pop-up showers and storms during the afternoon and evening time frame from Wednesday into next weekend. Return to index of stories...

1:07 Having breathing problems can be very frightening. People that can't breath are scared all the time. And they're anxious and sometimes depressed and they really need support.

A MIXTURE OF BRONCHITIS AND EMPHYSEMA, COPD IS PROGRESSIVE LUNG DISEASE. PATIENTS WITH ADVANCED DISEASE ARE IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL. TO HELP THEM BETTER SUPPORT, LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM REALIZED, YOU HAVE TO TEACH THEM.

JOAN CARROLL/DIR. CARE TRANSITIONS

RUNS:

:40 We started making home visits and we discovered some patients have oxygen tubing that would be 50-75 foot which means the patient isn't getting any of the oxygen they thought they were getting. They weren't taking their medication correctly. Some of the patients didn't know the difference between acute inhalers and their daily inhalers.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Faced with these conditions, quality of life was low. But giving COPD patients extra attention, in their homes, over the course of a year, is proving to be life-changing.

UNDER A PROGRAM CALLED CARE TRANSITIONS, PATIENTS GET HELP FROM SPECIALIZED THERAPISTS WHO ADDRESS MEDICATIONS, DIET, CONSERVING ENERGY, SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT, EVEN SOCAL ISSUES. WITH THE GOAL OF INCREASED INDEPENDENCE.

THE BOND BETWEEN VETERANS EXTENDS BEYOND THE BARS OF THIS MARYLAND PRISON.

YOU WOULDN'T KNOW IT, BUT INSIDE THE DECORATED HALLS OF NORTH DORM, VETS ARE HELPING VETS.

"I did some terrible things."

KENT BREWER'S LIFE SPIRALED OUT OF CONTROL AFTER HIS YEARS IN THE COAST GUARD.

"You look at my record, I killed two men in a space of 20 years."

THAT TOUGH SHELL WAS EVENTUALLY CRACKED.

"This was Trooper as a pup when he arrived here."

BREWER TOOK IN "TROOPER" OVER A YEAR AGO.

HE AGREED TO RAISE AND TRAIN THE PUP IN PRISON, ALWAYS AWARE, HE'LL HAVE TO GIVE HIM UP EVENTUALLY.

YOU SEE, TROOPER, AND THE PUPPIES CURRENTLY ROAMING THE YARD AT NORTH DORM, ARE BRED TO SERVE.

THEY'RE RAISED BY HAND-PICKED INMATES WITH THE HOPE OF SOMEDAY HELPING A DISABLED VETERAN

PRISONERS, MANY OF THEM VETERANS TEMSEVLES, TEACH THE PUPS HOW TO PICK UP ITEMS, OPEN DOORS…

.SOME, WILL EVEN ACT AS SEEING EYES FOR THE BLIND.

"We have a trainer that comes in once a week. She teaches and trains the inmates on the tasks these puppies are going to need. "

…YOU'LL FIND IT'S THE DOGS THAT TEACH THE LASTING LESSONS AROUND HERE.

"I have children on the outside but I wasn't a good father so this is a real experience for me. A good one. It showed me that I could love something or someone"

"That's it. Come here, there you go."

TERRY DORSEY FOUND A FRIEND IN "DELTA."

"Good girl, nice. She wouldn't eat. She only weighed 12 pounds"

THE 50-YEAR-OLD INCARCERATED VET NURTURED THE TINY RUNT INTO A HEALTHY SERVICE DOG.

"DELTA" OFFERED DORSEY A CHANCE OUT OF WHAT HE CALLED, HIS SELFISH WAYS.

"Like my sister told me, she said, I'm so proud of you today. And that's something she would have never said before. She would never tell me. She used to downrate me every time I'd talk to her on the phone. Now it's like, it's a joy, you know, when she says, you now, I'm real proud of you, what you're doing. She says, because it's not about you, it's about doing for that dog, and helping veterans."

INMATES RARELY GET TO SEE THEIR DOGS AGAIN AFTER THEY GO TO THEIR NEW HOMES.

NOT BREWER.

"Trooper!"

TROOPER RETURNED WITH HIS OWNER, WOUNDED ARMY SPECIALIST KEN DOYLE.

"What are you doing…. That's my boy…. awwww…."

THE TWO VETERANS SHARED A MOMENT.

"This one I cherish, but it's more important that you have it."

EACH A LITTLE BETTER OFF HAVING TROOPER IN THEIR LIVES.

"In comes Trooper, and he just runs at me"

"Trooper…speak…. !"

SOAP FEST CHARITY WEEKEND-ONCAM, CG

THE LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND IS NOT OVER YET!

AND IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO.

HEAD TO MARCO ISLAND. FOR THE SOAPFEST.

THIS EVENT HELPS RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILIDREN'S CHARITIES.

MORE THAN A DOZEN ACTORS FROM DAYTIMES SHOWS SUCH AS GENERAL HOSPITAL AND YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND.

TODAY THERE WILL BE A CRUISE ON THE MARCO ISLAND PRINCESS FROM NOON-3.

"This year's SoapFest children's beneficiaries include Camp Able and the Island Theater Company Kids Program, among others" says SoapFest founder Pat Berry. Camp Able provides a program for local special needs children.

"You don't have to be a soap fan to have a great time and support the kids," says Ms. Berry. "SoapFest is a great weekend that showcases Marco Island's innate hospitality amidst its white sandy beaches and waterways nearby the Gulf of Mexico to daytime drama actors and fans from around the world," she adds.

More than a dozen actors from treasured daytimes shows such as General Hospital, One Life to Live, Young and the Restless and Guiding Light are expected to attend, many for return visits. "These actors generously donate their time and talents to raise money for our kids," explains Ms. Berry.

The three days of non-stop festivities include favorites such as the legendary "A Night of Stars", "Cruisin', Boozin' and Schmoozin' with the Stars", "Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash", and "Brunch with the Boys".

SoapFest Charity Weekend kicks off with the A Night of Stars, Saturday, May 24th at 7PM at the quaint Bistro Soleil, located within the historic Old Marco Inn, 100 Palm Street. The evening's meal will be created by French born and trained, award winning Chef Denis Meurgue, well known for his unique and celebratory dinners.

This VIP event will offer several opportunities for up close and personal time with the actors. Celebrity guests from today's most popular daytime shows will join "old favorites," and be available for autograph signings, photos, Q&A, and live auctions.

A newly added feature to A Night of Stars is "Soapfest Game Night," where guests vie for prizes based upon answering trivia questions about their favorite soap stars and stories. This evening event always sells out, so tickets should be ordered promptly, advises Ms. Berry.

A Night of Stars tickets are $125 per person. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $200 and guarantees VIP seating with your favorite celebrity guest.

The fun continues on Sunday, May 25 aboard the Marco Island Princess yacht for the afternoon Cruisin' Boozin' & Schmoozin' With The Stars, to be held noon to 3 pm, departing from the Marco River Marina. The 3-hour boat ride is a perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with your favorite soap celebrity, while sightseeing Marco Island's coastal beauty as dolphins frolic in the water. Guests meet with actors for additional photographs and autographs. Raffles will be held for one-of-a-kind daytime drama memorabilia. Tickets are limited to 150 and cost $130 per person including a luncheon buffet.

The annual Celebrity Karaoke Bar Bash takes place at 9:00 pm until closing following the boat cruise on Sunday evening at Porky's Bar, located at 701 Bald Eagle Drive. This cherished event features daytime actors singing favorite tunes while pouring drinks to raise money. Ticket cost is $75 per person.

SoapFest concludes on Monday, May 26th with a brand new Sponsor VIP Brunch With The Boys of Daytime. Planning for this exclusive, one-of-a-kind event is underway with a very limited number of tickets available. According to Ms. Berry, details to this inaugural event are being kept under wraps as seating is very limited and special surprise guest are being confirmed daily.

"All levels of Sponsorships are available and offer personalized marketing opportunities to local businesses and individuals who want to reach Marco Island residents and upscale visitors while supporting local children," reports Ms. Berry. Call the Soapfest office 239-394-0080 for information on sponsorships.

Tickets for all events, updates to schedules, including current actor attendees, can be found at SoapFest.com. Tickets may also be purchased by phone by calling 239-394-0080. Return to index of stories...
