GRIFFIN FURLONG LOST HIS MOTHER TO LEUKEMIA AT THE AGE OF 6. AND SOON AFTER THAT LIVED WITH HIS FATHER AND OLDER BROTHER IN A HOMELESS SHELTER FOR TWO YEARS IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.

"at some points I wanted to quit. It was horrible. A kid should not have to go through that."

HIS FAMILY MOVED TO JACKSONVILLE WHEN HE WAS IN 6TH GRADE. THEY LIVED IN A RENTAL HOUSE BUT IT WAS ALWAYS A FINANCIAL STRUGGLE, OFTEN HAVING LITTLE TO EAT AND CONSTANTLY HAVING TO DEPEND ON FAMILY MEMBERS FOR HELP. A MONTH AGO WITH FINALS AND AP TESTS STILL AHEAD, HE FOUND HIMSELF HOMELESS AGAIN. HIS GIRLFRIENDS MOTHER PUT HIM UP FOR 3 WEEKS, THEN HE MOVED IN WITH AN AUNT AND UNCLE. THROUGH ALL THIS HE ENDED UP WITH A 4.65 GPA AND WILL GRADUATE AS VALEDICTORIAN ON JUNE 4TH.

"Positive mindset. I try to accomplish everything I need to do. I know that I have everything to lose. So I just push myself. School is all I have, family is all I have. 936 I am doing it all for me and what I have been through. I am doing it for my mom."

FURLONG SAYS HE ALWAYS WROTE IN HIS BASEBALL CAP EVERY SEASON, NEVER GIVE UP.

FURLONG JUST TURNED 18 MAY 5TH, JUST GOT A STATE ID WEDNESDAY, AND WILL SOON GET HIS DRIVERS LICENSE. HE LOVES CALCULUS AND PLANS ON STUDYING CIVIL ENGINEERING AT FLORIDA STATE WHERE HIS BROTHER WILL GRADUATE THIS SUMMER.

"I wrote him a letter of recommendation, and said he was the hardest working, most motivated student I have ever had."

"He never missed a day of school, was always at baseball practice. and managed to get his homework done every night and always do well."

FURLONG HAS RECEIVED SOME MONEY TO HELP WITH EXPENSES AT FLORIDA STATE, AND A HOUSING DISCOUNT. BUT IT IS NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH TO MEET HIS EXPENSES. HE HAS APPLIED FOR ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS BUT SO FAR HASN'T GOTTEN ANY GOOD NEWS.

"It is pretty frustrating, I thought being valedictorian, you should deserve a full scholarship, a full tuition scholarship, all I have been able to land is grants , that is need based.

so that is pretty tough. " Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Summer like heat continues"

After highs in the lower to middle 90s over the weekend, the summer like heat will continue through Memorial Day. Rain prospects will remain on the lower end, however we'll have a few isolated downpours popping during the heat of the day.

Our Monday will get off to a warm and humid start with temperature readings in the lower to middle 70s. Unlike yesterday, our morning will be a bit sunnier with clouds building as we go through the mid day hours. As the seabreeze moves ashore, expect a few more clouds to mix in with our sunshine. This afternoon, daytime highs will climb into the lower to middle 90s away from the coast, while the coast and area beaches stay a few degrees cooler. Rain chances today stay around the 20% range and will favor areas along the interstate. These will be very spotty in nature and the vast majority of Southwest Florida should stay fairly dry.

Through the evening hours some of these downpours will make their way out toward the Gulf waters, with clearing skies overnight. It will also be warm and humid as temperatures settle into the lower half of the 70s.

No major weather systems are headed our way over the next few days, but the heat and humidity will be sticking around. Morning temperatures will start in the 70s, while afternoon highs reach the lower 90s. As we progress through the week, we'll see increasing rain chances as we gradually transition into the rainy season pattern. By mid week,a few scattered showers and storms will be back in the forecast each and every afternoon. Return to index of stories...

There's a line to get into Castaway Cove in Wichita Falls.

because this waterpark is the only recreational water venue for miles. And they're not coming by it easily.

Catastrophic drought restrictions are in effect. forcing the city-owned park to truck-in well water just to stay open, 9-thousand gallons a day.

It's the price they have to pay to help keep the city's economy afloat. It's a modern day dust bowl in Texas forcing desperate measures. Wichita Falls also has plans to recycle the water people flush down their toilets for drinking water.

The latest drought monitor shows Texas bone dry. 90-percent of the state is in drought. in fact, to date 11 public water systems could run out of water in the next 45 days.

The effects are rippling through the economy. Car washes can only operate five days a week. jobs may be on the line.

It's come to this. they're praying for rain.

The only color around Gene and Jim Brennan's home on Lake Arrowhead are these artificial flowers. the lake, only 25 percent full, is Wichita Falls primary water supply.

It's an oasis, Castaway Cove, on an otherwise parched landscape. as drought - with a firm grip - refuses to let go.

FL: BOATER DROWNS TRYING TO SAVE DOG-PKG

"He loved golfing. He loved people. He had a lot of good friends."

.AND AMONG THE FRIENDS ON JOHN PATTI'S PONTOON BOAT SATURDAY AFTERNOON IS HIS THREE-YEAR-OLD DOG: A YORKY NAMED RASCAL.

"He usually takes his dog with him boating -- usually on a leash. Not sure how he got off the leash. Tricky dog."

WHILE BOATING ALONG BROOKER CREEK IN LAKE TARPON, PINELLAS DEPUTIES SAY RASCAL JUMPS INTO THE WATER.

"Mr. Patti jumped in the water after the dog he saved the dog he went underwater. The people on the boat couldn't find him he disappeared."

DIVE TEAMS SEARCH INTO THE NIGHT.

AROUND 8:15 THIS MORNING, A PARK VISITOR SPOTS HIS BODY.

"Patti's body Is found here along Brooker Creek, just off the main Lake Tarpon area. Deputies and boaters alike will tell you this water is not the safest to be swimming in."

"The water here is very murky; it's very dark; there's a lot of debris underneath, which doesn't make it safe for our divers; and it's very hard to see."

"So, why wouldn't you go swimming here, again?"

"'cuz there's alligators and bacteria."

AN AUTOPSY BY THE MEDICAL EXAMINER WILL DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED PATTI'S DEATH.

"Our deputies say that this appears to be an accident."

WHILE THE BUFFALO NATIVE SAVES HIS FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND, HIS HUMAN FRIENDS ARE LEFT MOURNING.

"John was just a great guy. He was always willing to help any body out any way he could, and he was just a real good friend, and we're gonna sure miss him."

SUMMER HOME SALES-2-SHOT

A LOT OF AMERICANS ARE SPENDING THIS MEMORIAL DAY THINKING ABOUT THEIR NEXT MOVE-

AS IN THE MOVE TO THEIR NEXT HOME.

ALTHOUGH, HOME SALES HAVE BEEN A BIT DISAPPOINTING SO FAR THIS YEAR.

THERE'S REASON TO BELIEVE THEY'RE ABOUT TO PICK UP. Return to index of stories...

SUMMER HOME SALES-PKG

AFTER SEVERAL DISAPPOINTING MONTHS, NEW AND EXISTING HOME SALES FINALLY PICKED UP IN APRIL.

.WITH SALES IN SOME AREAS OF THE COUNTRY, FAR BETTER THAN OTHERS.

"In a lot of markets around the country, particularly on the west coast, homes are moving very fast off the market. Especially at the low end - the low end houses are moving fastest."

FASTEST MEANS THEY'RE ON THE MARKET FOR ONLY TWO MONTHS.

HOWEVER, NOT ALL HOMES FOR SALE ARE TAKEN OFF THE MARKET BECAUSE THEY'VE SOLD.

"A lot of the new housing demand that we're seeing today is young people looking for urban rental not people looking to buy for the first time."

STILL, REAL ESTATE EXPERTS SAY THE REASON FOR THE SLOW SALES EARLIER IN THE YEAR. IS WHY THEY'RE OPTIMISTIC HEADED INTO SUMMER.

"Usually, home sales slow down a bit in the Summer off the Spring surge. But we didn't really see that Spring surge due to rough weather. So, perhaps we could see better sales this summer."

A LOOSENING OF MORTGAGE CREDIT IS ALSO WHY THEY SAY THE SUMMER COULD PROVIDE THE BOOST SELLERS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.

BUT NOW- INSTEAD OF JUST THE, HEY! I'M ENGAGED!

SOME WOMEN WANT THAT PICTURE THEY POST- TO BE EVEN MORE PERFECT.

"This usually is done in people with aged hands. But however we're seeing more and more trend of younger people wanting to do this"

THANKS TO THE SELFIE… HAND REJUVENATION IS TAKING OVER BRIDES-TO-BE.

"hand lift is when you actually try to tighten the skin around the hand by a small incision in the approximate part of the hand where it connects to the skin and pull the skin"

DR. AMIRLAK SAYS OTHER TREATMENTS INCLUDE LASERS FOR UNWANTED MARKS… OR FILLERS TO MAKE A HAND MORE SMOOTH.

BUT ARIRLAK SAYS UNLESS THERE ARE CLEAR SIGNS OF AGING…

"she has excess appearing veins here"

FOR MOST YOUNG WOMEN-IF THEY ASK-

"so if she asks me for hand rejuvenation, for example filling this area for volume fat or fillers."

THE ANSWER IS CLEAR-

"I'd probably say no. if you want to show off your hand with photographs and wedding rings. I think we all know that can be done with a photo shop. We all know plastic surgery, although it's becoming more and more accepted. It should not be used as a fad." Return to index of stories...

THIS MEMORIAL DAY-

AMERICANS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE FINDING WAYS TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED.

ONE FORMER MARINE DECIDED TO HONOR HIS FALLEN COMRADE BY CREATING A NEW BUSINESS-

INSPIRED BY HIS BUDDY'S 'WAR BEARD'

TORY DUNNAN HAS HIS STORY. Return to index of stories...

STUBBLE AND STACHE-PKG

"You know, we judge a good year, a good year is if you have more weddings to attend than funerals."

UNFORTUNATELY FOR THOSE WHO SERVE, TRAGEDY IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE.

STILL. EVERYONE REACTS DIFFERENTLY.

"I remember when I got the news about Justin being killed, I starred at my phone for a solid 30 minutes just not being able to move"

JUSTIN, WAS SERGEANT JUSTIN HANSEN, WHO SERVED WITH FELLOW MARINE , CAPTAIN NICHOLAS KARNAZE.

KARNAZE WAS HOME WHEN HIS CLOSE FRIEND WAS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN IN 20-12.

"And so for whatever reason, I decided to grow my beard for his funeral. I like to chalk it up as a coping mechanism."

HE HAD GROWN A "WAR BEARD."

MANY MARINES SPORT THEM DURING DEPLOYMENT.

INCLUDING JUSTIN.

"he actually had a pretty strong, red beard. it was pretty aggressive. And Justin in general was just -- just, he was larger than life. He was just a big guy. And his personality matched his size and his beard."

"What would he say about your beard now?"

"Oh, he'd be jealous. Yeah, he'd like it"

GROWING THAT BEARD TAUGHT CARNAZY ALL THAT CAME WITH IT.

"most guys don't get past a certain point because it just becomes too irritating and they shave it off."

SO.HE WENT INTO BUSINESS.

THE BEARD BUSINESS.

"Did you ever think you'd kind of be the master of how to take care of a beard?"

"Yeah, going from a Marine Corps Special Operations Officer into a skin care. definitely did not see that one coming."

HE LAUNCHED STUBBLE AND 'STACHE WHICH DONATES 15 PERCENT OF PROFITS TO CHARITIES WORKING WITH COMBAT VETERANS.

CARNAZY SAYS IT'S ABOUT BUILDING AND GROWING SOMETHING WITH A PURPOSE.

"my intent with this, is to create something that will last and fund these needed endeavors all in Justin's name. Because I just do not want that to go away, and I don't want people to forget what he did"

SOMETHING THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR KARNAZY. EACH TIME HE LOOKS IN THE MIRROR.

WEATHER-WX WALL

For Memorial Day Monday, the region is expected to begin the morning dry with afternoon highs soaring into the low to mid 90s by the afternoon. Coastal locations will remain a touch cooler with highs there in the upper 80s.

Once again on Monday with the seabreeze interaction, the possibility of some isolated showers or storms developing in the late afternoon and early evening will remain possible, with the likelihood remaining around 20%. Return to index of stories...

ONE OF THE BIGGEST FEARS FOR SOMEONE WITH UNRELENTING BACK PAIN- IS UNDERGOING SURGERY. MOST TIMES, THOSE FEARS ARE UNFOUNDED. SURGERY IS THE LAST STOP IN TREATMENT OPTIONS. THE FIRST IS THERAPY.

TOM REID/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

2:40 We do range of motion assessment, strength assessment. We'll check functional movements. We try to do some diagnostic tests, special tests for neurological tension, things like that to try to develop an idea of what's going on.

LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM'S NEW COMPREHENSIVE SPINE CENTER OFFERS A STARTING POINT TO EVALUATE AND TREAT PAIN. MANY CASES RESULT FROM YEARS OF MISUSE.

TOM REID/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

3:22 They'll start to kind of damage certain areas of their back over time and without correcting the movement problem they're going to continue to wear down. You're going to start to see degenerative disc problems, arthritis creep up sooner.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

3:52 Our goal is to get people functional. We look at what they'd like to accomplish , activities of daily living and try to get them back to that level of function.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Given a choice, most people opt for conservative care. That includes pain management and therapy. The more progress someone makes with physical therapy, the less pain medication they'll need.

2-SHOT TOM & AMY

RUNS:

:02 This machine called New Step. It's comfortable for patients because the chair kind of shifts around a little bit so they are able to actually sit without having to throw their leg over the machine.

STRENGTHENING MUSCLE GROUPS, INCREASING STABILITY AND LEARNING NEW MOVEMENT PATTERNS, GOES A LONG WAY, BUT IT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO ELIMINATE PAIN.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

4:28 They may need to come back for injection therapy and sometimes one injection takes care of the problem. Other times they need every six months or so.

BACK PAIN IS OFTEN A PROCESS, EVOLVING OVER YEARS. GETTING RELIEF IS A PROCESS TOO, WITH PROPER GUIDANCE PATIENTS CAN GET THROUGH IT. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
