RAIN PROSPECTS RISE THIS WEEK

For the rest of today and tomorrow it looks hot, humid and mainly dry across southwest Florida. A few, very isolated, downpours will be on the First Alert Doppler Radar tonight; however, the rain activity won't be spread across a wide area and many places stay dry again this evening. Temperatures will stay warm this evening and only drop to the lower 70's tomorrow morning. After the isolated showers go away tonight our skies will stay mostly clear.

The forecast tomorrow looks like another mostly sunny day with a round of hot 90's in the afternoon. Humidity will be up again tomorrow, but the overall moisture content of the atmosphere above us will only be able to produce a couple of afternoon downpours on Tuesday. The computer models forecast moisture values to come up by Wednesday and, if that is the correct prediction, we should see more showers and thunderstorms by the middle of the week. Each afternoon will top 90 degrees this week and the evenings will be mild and muggy with temperatures in the lower 70's. Return to index of stories...

THIS IS THE NEWEST WEAPON IN THE BATTLE TO MORE ACCURATELY PREDICT DANGEROUS HURRICANES.SHARKS.

SCIENTISTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ARE PUTTING SENSORS ON SHARKS AND OTHER BIG GAME FISH - TO TRANSMIT DATA, SUCH AS DEEP WATER TEMPERATURES.

INCREASINGLY, SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THOSE READINGS COULD HELP PREDICT WHEN A TROPICAL STORM WILL TURN INTO A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS PREDICTING AS MANY AS 13 TROPICAL STORMS THIS YEAR - SIX COULD BECOME HURRICANES, AND TWO THEY SAY COULD BE CATEGORY THREE OR HIGHER.

THEIR GOAL IS TO BE ABLE TO SOUND THE ALARM WHEN A BIG STORM IS COMING.

THIS BRAND NEW STORM SURGE SIMULATOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI COULD HELP - IT COMBINES COASTLINE SURGE AND WIND MODELS - THE WEATHER CHANNEL GOT A SNEAK PEAK.

SOT DR. BRIAN HAUS/ROSENSTIEL SCHOOL OF MARINE AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE.

"We're on the cusp of really making some exciting developments."

WHEN ITS FULLY OPERATIONAL, IT WILL BE ABLE TO SIMULATE A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE WITH WINDS IN EXCESS OF 157-MILES AN HOUR.

SOT DR. HAUS

"These will be the highest wind measurements that have ever been made/EDIT/that will/EDIT/hopefully improve forecast models."

AND IT WILL ALLOW SCIENTISTS TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF STORM SURGE - LIKE THE ONE THAT CAUSED SUCH DEVASTATION IN SUPERSTORM SANDY.

Standupper

IN HURRICANES MORE PEOPLE FEAR THE INTENSE WINDS AND SWIRLING DEBRIS. BUT EXPERTS SAY STATISTICALLY MORE PEOPLE DIE IN THE STORM SURGE FROM DROWNING THAN FROM ANY OTHER REASON.

FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR - THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER WILL SHARE STORM SURGE PREDICTION MAPS LIKE THIS AS A HURRICANE APPROACHES TO INDICATE WHERE DANGEROUS FLOODING IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR.

SOT: DR. LOUIS UCCELLINI/DIRECTOR, NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

"We are bringing more tools to bear on this type of a forecast/EDIT/we're reducing the cone of uncertainty and I think that's a remarkable achievement.

Many streets are shut down, and most of this ancient city is on lock-down. I'm Anne Thompson in Jerusalem, now back to you." Return to index of stories...

BATTLEFIELD TEDDY-ONCAM

THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, AMERICANS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE FINDING WAYS TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED, INCLUDING ONE VERY SPECIAL MOTHER.

WHEN LISA FREEMAN'S SON WAS KILLED IN COMBAT IN AFGHANISTAN, SHE SAYS SHE WOULDN'T ALLOW HERSELF TO GO TO A DARK PLACE.

INSTEAD. SHE STARTED SEWING.

TORY DUNNAN HAS HER STORY. Return to index of stories...

BATTLEFIELD TEDDY-PKG

FOR LISA FREEMAN, THE HEALING BEGINS WITH HER HANDS.

"just pray over the uniform while I am going"

SHE SITS AND SEWS IN A TINY UPSTAIRS ROOM IN A GRAND HOUSE ON THE GEORGIA COAST.

"makes me stop and think about matthew. he was only over there 9 days when he was killed"

"mom dad I can never re pay you for all you have done for me you made me in to the man I am today I hope that I have made you proud that has always been my goal. I love you both so much."

SEAMING TOGETHER. THE MEMORY OF HER SON.

MARINE CAPTAIN MATTHEW FREEMAN WAS KILLED IN COMBAT WHILE SERVING IN AFGHANISTAN.

"do you still talk to him?"

"All the time."

"what would Matthew be saying to you right now as you're sewing?"

"he's loving that something good is happening out of something so tragic"

"what are you thinking about?"

"I can tell you as I'm doing this I am thinking about the young woman who brought me these. This was her brother Shannon Chihuhua's pants and when she first came to me she just wanted to talk about her brother and how much she missed him. and so for her this is just one more thing that she can say, that's your uncle Shannon's. thats my Shannon bear. Shannon Chihuhua. Thank you for your service"

BEARS LOVINGLY MADE FROM THE COMBAT UNIFORMS OF THE FALLEN.

"Can you stick your hand in there?"

THE SHANNON BEAR MIGHT BE FOR SPECIALIST SHANNON CHIHUHUA'S NEPHEWS, BUT IT'S HIS SISTER JESSICA WHO'S CLUTCHING THEM.

"when my kids are grown, and older, even for me. It's something that we'll always have. And we'll always have his memories."

REMEMBERING HER BROTHER, KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN.

"it gets hard. We just miss them, don't we?"

"Yeah"

"that's a c-130 which is what Matthew flew."

"maybe he's just letting us know he's happy too."

"Yep it's him."

MANY OF US TAKE PICTURES OF PLACES AND EVENTS TO REMEMBER THEM.

BUT NEW RESEARCH FINDS - DOING THAT MAY HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT.

THE PHENOMENON IS CALLED "PHOTO-TAKING IMPAIRMENT EFFECT" - WHEN PEOPLE HAVE A HARDER TIME REMEMBERING SOMETHING, BECAUSE THEY TOOK TOO MANY PICTURES.

EXPERTS SAY WHEN WE TAKE PHOTOS WE FAIL TO RELY ON ALL OF OUR SENSES. Return to index of stories...

CHRONIC BACK PAIN CAN OVERTAKE A PERSON'S LIFE, MAKING EVERY MOVE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.

ADDING TO THEIR TENSION IS THE THOUGHT OF NEEDING SURGERY.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER EXPLAINS HOW CONSERVATIVE METHODS ARE HELPING PEOPLE BEAT BACK PAIN. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

ONE OF THE BIGGEST FEARS FOR SOMEONE WITH UNRELENTING BACK PAIN- IS UNDERGOING SURGERY. MOST TIMES, THOSE FEARS ARE UNFOUNDED. SURGERY IS THE LAST STOP IN TREATMENT OPTIONS. THE FIRST IS THERAPY.

TOM REID/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

2:40 We do range of motion assessment, strength assessment. We'll check functional movements. We try to do some diagnostic tests, special tests for neurological tension, things like that to try to develop an idea of what's going on.

LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM'S NEW COMPREHENSIVE SPINE CENTER OFFERS A STARTING POINT TO EVALUATE AND TREAT PAIN. MANY CASES RESULT FROM YEARS OF MISUSE.

TOM REID/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

3:22 They'll start to kind of damage certain areas of their back over time and without correcting the movement problem they're going to continue to wear down. You're going to start to see degenerative disc problems, arthritis creep up sooner.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

3:52 Our goal is to get people functional. We look at what they'd like to accomplish , activities of daily living and try to get them back to that level of function.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Given a choice, most people opt for conservative care. That includes pain management and therapy. The more progress someone makes with physical therapy, the less pain medication they'll need.

2-SHOT TOM & AMY

RUNS:

:02 This machine called New Step. It's comfortable for patients because the chair kind of shifts around a little bit so they are able to actually sit without having to throw their leg over the machine.

STRENGTHENING MUSCLE GROUPS, INCREASING STABILITY AND LEARNING NEW MOVEMENT PATTERNS, GOES A LONG WAY, BUT IT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO ELIMINATE PAIN.

DR. DONNA LANTHIER/PHYSIATRIST

RUNS:

4:28 They may need to come back for injection therapy and sometimes one injection takes care of the problem. Other times they need every six months or so.

BACK PAIN IS OFTEN A PROCESS, EVOLVING OVER YEARS. GETTING RELIEF IS A PROCESS TOO, WITH PROPER GUIDANCE PATIENTS CAN GET THROUGH IT. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Patti's body Is found here along Brooker Creek, just off the main Lake Tarpon area. Deputies and boaters alike will tell you this water is not the safest to be swimming in."

"The water here is very murky; it's very dark; there's a lot of debris underneath, which doesn't make it safe for our divers; and it's very hard to see."

"So, why wouldn't you go swimming here, again?"

"'cuz there's alligators and bacteria."

AN AUTOPSY BY THE MEDICAL EXAMINER WILL DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED PATTI'S DEATH.

"Our deputies say that this appears to be an accident."

WHILE THE BUFFALO NATIVE SAVES HIS FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND, HIS HUMAN FRIENDS ARE LEFT MOURNING.

JIM RICHES LOST HIS SON JIMMY A FIREFIGHTER ON 9/11 BUT HE WON'T SET FOOT INSIDE THE MUSEUM MEANT TO HONOR THE VICTIMS.

"It's disgusting. Totally horrible they were dancing on our sons grave. Im very insulted and I think they crossed the line.

THE LATEST SPLASHY HEADLINES DOCUMENTING A VIP COCKTAIL PARTY AT THE MUSEUM THE SAME WEEK IT OPENED. ANOTHER AFFRONT TO SOME WHO ARE ALREADY FUMING OVER THE MUSEUM'S GIFT SHOP, THE PLANS TO OPEN A RESTAURANT AND 24 DOLLAR ADMISSION FEE.

I think it's now become a money machine, a revenue generating tourist attraction.

THE MUSEUM IS DEFENDING THE PARTY WHICH THEY CALL A DONOR RECEPTION. IN A STATEMENT, THE MEMORIAL'S PRESIDENT JOE DANIELS SAID QUOTE: "IT IS ABSOLUTELY APPROPRIATE TO THANK DONORS WHO GAVE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND OTHERS -- INCLUDING FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WORKED SO HARD THE MAKE THE MUSEUM A REALITY." PART OF THAT REALITY GENERATING REVENUE. MUSEUM ORGANIZERS SAY IT COSTS $65 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO RUN. BUT SOME FAMILIES INSIST THEIR LOSS SHOULDN'T BE PART OF A GAIN - FOR ANY REASON.

"To have a cocktail party over the graves of 8000 human remains of NYC's heroes and victims is truly a sacrilege."

THE UNIDENTIFIED HUMAN REMAINS ARE HOUSED IN THE UNDERGROUND MUSEUM, BEHIND A WALL. SOME FAMILY MEMBERS FEEL THE LOCATION ISN'T FIT FOR A FINAL RESTING PLACE. THEY'RE VOWING TO FIGHT TO HAVE THEIR LOVED ONES MOVED ABOVE GROUND - AS PART OF THE MEMORIAL WHICH IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC.
