THREE MEN IN COLORADO ARE MISSING AFTER AN ENORMOUS MUDSLIDE THAT'S ESTIMATED TO BE 250-FEET DEEP IN PLACES.

AMONG THE MISSING IS A RESERVOIR SUPERVISOR AND A FATHER AND HIS SON, BOTH OF WHOM ARE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS.

MORE FROM NBC'S JOHN YANG. Return to index of stories...

COLORADO MUDSLIDE-PKG

THE SEARCH FOR THE MISSING IS SLOW GOING BECAUSE OF THE THREAT OF MORE SLIDES.

SOT Sheriff Stan Hilkey

"There's big fissures or cracks in the mountain that look like they're ready to slide as well. And that will all slide into the same chute that the rest of the slide went down."

THE SLIDE WAS MASSIVE--AT LEAST A HALF-MILE WIDE, THREE MILES LONG AND AS MUCH AS 200 FEET DEEP. MUD--SATURATED BY NEARLY A HALF-INCH OF RAIN--MIXED WITH SHATTERED TIMBER, ROCKS AND SNOW AS IT ROARED DOWN THE MOUNTAINSIDE WITH REMARKABLE FORCE.

SOT Sheriff Stan Hilkey

"It came to a hill and went up and over a hill and then came back down--a significant hill."

THE MISSING MEN HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS COUNTY EMPLOYEE CLANCY NICHOLS, HIS SON DANNY NICHOLS, AND ANOTHER MAN, WES HAWKINS. OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS SAY THEY WENT TO SEE WHY IRRIGATION WATER HAD BEEN DISRUPTED.AND DID NOT RETURN.

MOS Alan Hill, Collbran Resident

"It was just starting to slide and they went to see what was going on and got caught, I guess."

SEARCHERS ARE BEING ADVISED BY COUNTERPARTS IN WASHINGTON STATE, WHERE A DEVASTATING MUDSLIDE IN MARCH KILLED MORE THAN 40 PEOPLE. THEY HOLD OUT HOPE THE MISSING WILL BE FOUND ALIVE.

SOT Sheriff Stan Hilkey

"Everybody on this mountain is praying for a miracle right now."

SEARCHERS ARE USING UNMANNED AIRCRAFT WITH INFRARED TECHNOLOGY IN A RACE AGAINST TIME. FOR TODAY, JOHN YANG, NBC NEWS, CHICAGO. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA."Increasing rain prospects"

It was a hot Memorial Day with temperatures in the lower to middle 90s, but late day showers and storms were able to cool us off pretty quickly. The heat and humidity will remain with us for the rest of the upcoming week as rain chances begin to increase.

Sunny skies will prevail throughout the late morning hours with a few high clouds, and temperatures will warm into the middle to upper 80s by noon. Expect clouds to bubble up across the area during the day with partly sunny conditions during the afternoon. Daytime highs will climb into the lower to middle 90s, with slightly cooler readings along the beaches. An east and southeasterly wind flow will keep us in more of a classic summer- time pattern with the seabreeze pinned closer to the urban areas. This will keep the chance for a few isolated downpours in the forecast.

A few rain areas will linger through the evening hours as they push out over the Gulf of Mexico. Skies will eventually clear overnight and temperatures will settle into the lower 70s.

As more moisture builds into Southwest Florida, rain prospects will be on the rise by mid to late week. Our mornings will start off dry with scattered downpours and storms during the peak heating hours as we start to transition into more of a rainy season type pattern. Morning lows will run in the lower 70s, while afternoon highs climb into the lower 90s.

Return to index of stories...

"It became very obvious from the first patient that this is going to be a winner."

DOCTOR CHRISTOPHER GOSTOUT CLINICAL TRIAL -WHICH BEGAN MORE THAN A YEAR AND A HALF AGO - HAS RESULTED IN MAJOR WEIGHT LOSS IN 10 PATIENTS.

"I've lost 40 pounds and it's happened fairly quickly."

THE 2-HOUR-OUTPATIENT PROCEDURE CONSTRICTS THE STOMACH WITHOUT SURGERY.

INSTEAD, A MECHANICAL SUTURING DEVICE IS FIXED AT THE END OF AN ENDOSCOPE THAT'S SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT THROUGH THE ESOPHAGUS.

"It's about the size of my finger.it's almost exactly the size of my index finger."

SMALL BUT PRECISE.

THE FLEXIBLE INSTRUMENT THREADS THROUGH THE BODY TO THE STOMACH WHERE ONE ROW OF SUTURES RESHAPES AND THE OTHER FORMS THE SLEEVE.

ALLOWING A PATIENT TO EAT AND FEEL FULL SOONER AND FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME.

"It's not just a simple, miracle cure or magic bullet. You still have to do a lot of work, take responsibility and will power, but it was a great tool and can really change your life."

UNLIKE A GASTRIC BYPASS, THE PROCEDURE CAN BE REVERSED, REPEATED AND ADJUSTED TO FIT THE PERSON'S NEEDS.

"It gives us the signal that we can go back down. Tighten things up and re-modify the sleeve that we create. We can do that throughout the patient's life."

A NEW CUTTING-EDGE TECHNIQUE WITHOUT THE CUTTING.

"Because the procedure is a lot simpler to perform, it's an opportunity for many, many more patients."
