FIRST WEATHERSOME STORMS THIS EVENING

Scattered downpours and thunderstorms are expected to continue this evening along Southwest Florida's I-75 corridor.

Any storms that move across the region this evening will come with times of heavy rainfall, gusty wind and lightning.

The activity is expected to pushward northwestward over the Gulf of Mexico and begin tapering off in intensity during the evening, with conditions calming down further throughout the overnight time frame. Low temperatures tonight are anticipated to cool to around 72 degrees.

The weather scenario looks rather similar for Friday. Once again scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms are expected with the influence of the sea breeze. Temperatures are expected to max out from the upper 80s in coastal communities to low 90s for areas further inland.

Scattered PM storms stay in the forecast for the upcoming weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will bear the chance for some isolated showers or storms with highs topping out in the 90s.

Looking more long range at the forecast, the upcoming work week looks to feature daily high temperatures in the low 90s, with the chance of some showers or storms developing each day, mainly in the late afternoon time periods. Return to index of stories...

OF THE 24 VEHICLES RECENTLY TESTED FOR THEIR CRASH PREVENTION CAPABILITIES.

.21 EARNED RATINGS OF "ADVANCED" OR "SUPERIOR" FROM THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY. WHO ALSO HAD HIGH PRAISE FOR AUTOMAKERS.

"That's the best scenario is that you avoid the crash. And the automakers are working hard on this. They see it as a competitive advantage to be on the cutting edge of safety"

THE RATINGS ARE BASED ON VEHICLES WITH A WARNING ALARM.

.AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY. AN AUTOBRAKING SYSTEM. THAT RESEARCHERS SAY. EVEN IF IT DOESN'T PREVENT THE CRASH.WILL REDUCE THE SPEED.

"And reducing the speed reduces the damage to both vehicles involved and also reduces the likelihood that anybody in either vehicles will be hurt"

LUXURY CARS AND SUV'S.FROM BMW.AND MERCEDES. MADE UP A BIG CHUNK OF THE TEST GROUP.

.BUT MORE MAINSTREAM RIDES LIKE BUICK.CHEVROLET.DODGE. AND TOYOTA ALSO RECEIVED HIGH RATINGS.

.FOR HAVING A CAMERA, RADAR OR LASER THAT MONITORS THE ROAD AHEAD.

"And if the system senses an imminent crash and the driver doesn't react, the vehicle itself can brake automatically"

THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE EXPECTS AUTOBRAKING, CRASH PREVENTION TO BE STANDARD ON MOST VEHICLES WITHIN A FEW YEARS.

WHILE THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION COULD PROPOSE MANDATING IT EVEN SOONER.
