SOME STORMS THIS EVENING

Scattered downpours and thunderstorms are expected to continue this evening along Southwest Florida's I-75 corridor.

Any storms that move across the region this evening will come with times of heavy rainfall, gusty wind and lightning.

The activity is expected to pushward northwestward over the Gulf of Mexico and begin tapering off in intensity during the evening, with conditions calming down further throughout the overnight time frame. Low temperatures tonight are anticipated to cool to around 72 degrees.

The weather scenario looks rather similar for Friday. Once again scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms are expected with the influence of the sea breeze. Temperatures are expected to max out from the upper 80s in coastal communities to low 90s for areas further inland.

Scattered PM storms stay in the forecast for the upcoming weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will bear the chance for some isolated showers or storms with highs topping out in the 90s.

Looking more long range at the forecast, the upcoming work week looks to feature daily high temperatures in the low 90s, with the chance of some showers or storms developing each day, mainly in the late afternoon time periods. Return to index of stories...

HURRICANE SEASON-BNR-PKG

"As the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Draws near-

The focus here at the National Hurricane Center isn't just about

preparedness, but education." George Solis

With the most state-of-the-art tools at their disposal.

The experts at the National Hurricane Center in Miami are leaders in

calling the shots when dangerous storms and it's effects threaten our

coasts

02:20:42 "it's one of the toughest places to forecast storm surge and

it's one of the most vulnerable places in the US" Jamie Rhome, Storm

Surge Specialist, NHC

As we approach the start of 2014 hurricane season-

The center invited all media to proudly announce new tools at for

improved forecasts.

Including new storm surge flood maps

02:12:09 "it will show how far inland from the immediate beach the

storm surge flooding could go, and in Southwest Florida that could go

not just blocks but miles inland" Dr. Rick Knabb, NHC Director

NHC director Dr. Rick Knabb says there will also be extended forecast models.

Five days instead of 48 hours.

Knabb says this year- the NHC really aims to focus on the perils

associated with storms not just the wind.

02:11:15 "about half of the loss of life in the past few decades had

been due to storm surge, another water fatalities has been due to

freshwater inland flooding like Debbie" Knabb

Despite this year's outlook calling for a below average season-

Experts say it's not indicative that Southwest Florida is in the all clear.

02:13:12 "There is a very big difference between how busy the

hurricane season might be and how bad it might be where you live"

Knabb

Which is why at the end of the day- the National Hurricane Center's

message is simple, prepare and plan, and really stick to it.

02:21:35 "you're going to listen to this interview and probably you're

not going to do anything after hearing it, and that's what we're

trying to convince people to stop" Rhome

Again, some of the key things the experts at the hurricane center want

to sink in:

Having a evacuation plan if you are

Knowing if you're in an evacuation area

And start prepping now instead of waiting till the last minute
