ANOTHER ROUND OF SCATTERED STORMS TODAY

The last day of the work week starts rather warm. Temperatures are in the lower 70s and will warm to near 90 degrees this afternoon with some upper 80s at the beaches. We'll see a mix of sun and clouds this morning. By late morning clouds will be building and some downpours will be riding the east-southeasterly breeze across the state. This is a scenario very similar to yesterday; giving us isolated storms by midday and plenty of scattered storm activity through the afternoon. Some storms will be strong with gusty winds and heavy downpours. All of Southwest Florida is fair game to see rain today. Deeper inland areas will be favored early, but the the rains spread across toward the west-northwest. By the time the day is over, we'll end up with pockets of 2-3" rain totals; similar to the last couple of days. The storm activity will fade through the evening time frame and we'll see partly cloudy skies through the night.

We'll have another good rain chance on Saturday with plenty of scattered storms, some of which will start in the midday time frame. Storms tomorrow afternoon will likely be moving a bit more slowly and that could lead to some high rain totals in the heavier downpours.

A few afternoon storms stay in the forecast each day through the middle of next week with highs staying close to 90 degrees. Return to index of stories...

THERE WAS A TIME CHRISTY WOLFORD "wolf-erd" NEVER IMAGINED SHE WOULD HAVE MOMENTS LIKE THIS.

SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER WHEN SHE WAS TWENTY-EIGHT -- JUST MONTHS AFTER GETTING MARRIED AND HAVING HER FIRST CHILD, HER DAUGHTER LAUREN.

"There was no option for me to do anything but to figure out how to beat this and beat this the best I could, for her."

CHRISTY WENT THROUGH A DOUBLE MASTECTOMY AND SIX MONTHS OF CHEMOTHERAPY -- A TREATMENT THAT RENDERS A MAJORITY OF PATIENTS INFERTILE.

BUT CHRISTY PARTICIPATED IN A CLINICAL TRIAL THAT ADDED THE DRUG GOSERELIN "goh-SEHR-uh-lihn" TO HER REGIMEN.

"It essentially shuts down ovarian activity while the patients are on chemotherapy."

MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED WOMEN PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY.

RESEARCHERS FOUND THOSE GIVEN THE DRUG WERE LESS LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE OVARIAN FAILURE -- AND MORE LIKELY TO GET PREGNANT AFTER CHEMO.

THERE WERE SIXTEEN HEALTHY PREGNANCIES AMONG THE WOMEN GIVEN GOSERELIN, COMPARED TO SEVEN AMONG THOSE NOT TREATED.

"It is an exciting study because it does add another option for our young breast cancer patients, and even though the data we have isn't perfect, at least it gives us some evidence that there's something you can do to help preserve your fertility."

CHRISTY AND HER HUSBAND BUBBA HAVE HAD THREE BOYS SINCE HER TREATMENT ENDED -- AND THEY GIVE THE DRUG FULL CREDIT.

"Because you can see through it, obviously there's the psychological effect that oh my gosh, something broke. But nobody was ever in danger."

ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEER MICHAEL SWANBERG SAYS THERE IS A THICK PANEL OF GLASS THAT DIDN'T BREAK -- DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND 10-THOUSAND POUNDS.

OR "FIVE TONS" OF WEIGHT.

WE WATCHED AS CREWS REPLACED THE THIN LAYER ABOVE IT, THAT CAUSED SUCH A SCARE.

"So, this is the new sheet of glass that will go on the sky deck. If you look here, you can see exactly how thin that is. Crews tell me this is meant to be scratched and scraped up. In fact, it's replaced every 6 to 9 months depending upon wear and tear."

FROM OUTSIDE, AT A HELICOPTER'S VANTAGE POINT, YOU CAN SEE HOW THE OBSERVATION LEDGE EXTENDS JUST BEYOND THE WILLIS TOWER.

WITH THE NEW GLASS PANEL FINALLY IN PLACE, WE PUT IT TO THE TEST.

"So, we are stepping onto that thin sheet of glass now.

"That's correct. The quarter inch thick piece of glass is designed to protect the one and a half inch structural glass."

THE LEDGE ON THE SKYDECK - NOW BACK IN BUSINESS.

AND EVEN THESE GUYS ADMIT, AFTER THE SCARE OF THEIR LIVES.

"For the record, it's an awesome view. It's an awesome building."

IT'S THE VIEW FROM UP TOP, THAT MADE SUCH AN IMPRESSION ON THEM, THAT THEY MAY JUST COME BACK UP FOR MORE.

Fusing the joint is a permanent solution. It intimidates many people because it takes away some degrees of motion. But the procedure is often the right fix because it also takes away pain.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

1:48 You strip the joint of all its cartilage and then you're convincing the joint that it's almost more like a broken bone rather than a joint anymore.

SEVERAL SCREWS COMPRESS THE BONES TOGETHER AND THEY EVENTUALLY FUSE. WHILE THAT JOINT IS NO LONGER FUNCTIONAL- TWO NEIGHBORING JOINTS OFFER SOME RANGE OF MOTION.

DR. JASON NEMITZ/FOOT & ANKLE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

8:00 The foot can go up and down around that joint as well as side to side. So most people only lose about 5 to 10 digress of motion after this type of surgery.

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SHELBY BAUM WAS DEVASTATED TO SEE HER V-NECK BLOUSE BECOME A SQUARE-NECK SHIRT - NOT BECAUSE OF THE FASHION,

BUT BECAUSE OF THE STATEMENT THE PHOTO EDITS CONVEYED.

"My tattoo was the thing that caught my eye the most."

HER TATTOO READS "I'M ENOUGH THE WAY I AM." IT WAS HER WAY OF OVERCOMING AN ABUSIVE HOME AS A CHILD.

"And for them to cover that up, I don't feel like you are enough for them to discourage you of your body and shame you."

"Now think about that statement. That is a huge statement from a 15-16 year old girl."

THE DIRECTOR OF RAPE RECOVERY CENTER AGREES.

"There is a message there about shaming girls about their clothing choices and their individuality and their power of their own lives."

AND PARENTS AND STUDENTS WE SPOKE TOO ALSO SAW A DOUBLE STANDARD IN WHICH PHOTOS WERE EDITED.

"Because a lot of the girls from different social groups, except sports groups, will be dress coded exactly for the exact same outfit."

"I feel like they're pushing their preferences on us as students without our permission."

THE SUPERINTENDENT ADMITTED IN A STATEMENT TODAY THAT MISTAKES WERE MADE AND NOT ALL PHOTOS WERE EDITED CONSISTENTLY.

BUT HE STANDS BY THE DECISION TO EDIT THE PHOTOS, AND SAYS A LARGE SIGN ON PICTURE DAY CLEARLY NOTIFIED STUDENTS IT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEIR

CLOTHES VIOLATED THE DRESS CODE.

"We believe the rules are fairly clear. And yes we believe also we can, I believe, we could've done a better job in enforcing it consistently."

ONE PARENT WE SPOKE TOO SAYS THERE WAS NO PRIOR NOTIFICATION. Return to index of stories...
