FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Its official. We're back in the rainy season pattern, so you can bet that scattered showers and storms return to our forecast over the weekend.

The mornings will be mostly dry, but a few pockets of rain will be possible by the early afternoon as the atmosphere starts to heat up.

The bigger storm clusters will likely hold off until the mid to late afternoon when the sea breeze becomes more of a factor. All of us will be fair game for rain over the next couple afternoons, especially along the urban corridor and close to the coast where the sea breeze sets up.

Some of our weekend storms may be strong, producing gusty winds, frequent lightning and blinding rain.

It's even possible for a few localized spots to pick up over 2 inches of rain, yet other may stay completely dry due to the scattered nature of the storms.

Expect there to be plenty of humidity and warmth around over the weekend as daytime highs climb into the upper 80s and low 90s while overnight lows only cool to the low to mid 70s.

Winds will generally be out of the east southeast from 5-15 mph with some higher gusts inside the afternoon storms.

As we head into the upcoming week, it appears even more tropical moisture will surge in from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, setting up fairly cloudy and rainy pattern for most of the week.

Daytime temps will be a touch cooler as well with highs topping out in the mid to upper 80s. Return to index of stories...

CAPE CORAL RESIDENT MARIO LOPEZ ISN'T THRILLED WITH HIS MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL.

02:58:14 " We have a lot of issues with LCEC, other places I lived I used FPL and it's always the bill is much cheaper" Lopez

CITY LEADERS SAY THEY'VE ALSO TAKEN NOTE

WHICH IS WHY AS THEIR 30 YEAR OLD LEASE AGREEMENT WITH LCEC COMES TO A CLOSE

THE CITY IS LOOKING TO PART WAYS WITH THE ELECTRICAL POWER UTILITY

02:58:35 "As long as it's cheaper I'm up for it" Lopez

AND FORM ITS OWN ELECTRIC UTILITY.

CITING THE POTENTIAL FOR BETTER SERVICE, TAX INCENTIVES, AND ACCESS TO FEDERAL FUNDS IN THE CASE OF A NATURAL DISASTER.

02:34:30 " If we didn't do this we would not be doing our due diligence for our residents." Marni Sawicki.

THE MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY OPTION IS ONE OF THREE THE CITY IS LOOKING INTO.

LAST WEEK THEY DECIDED TO PAY 24-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A STUDY TO LOOK AT ALL THE OPTIONS ON THE TABLE

02:33:53 "it's one of those things that have to do to make sure we're getting the best rates we can for residents"

THE OTHER OPTIONS- FIND A DIFFERENT PROVIDER, OR RENEW THE LEASE AGREEMENT WITH LCEC.

02:59:45 " We shut the lights off we don't keep all the lights on" Phyllis Spadola

OTHER RESIDENTS LIKE PHYLLIS SPADOLA SAY THEY DON'T CARE WHO THEY'RE PAYING - THEY JUST WANT A CHEAPER BILL

02:59:30 " If they can find something better, yeah definitely!"

CITY LEADERS SAY ITS NOTHING PERSONAL AGAINST LCEC- AND IF THE STUDY PROVES THEY'RE THE BEST OPTION THEY'LL CONTINUE THE PARTERSHIP

02:34:03 "is it cost effective, will it do what we need it to do, and then may be give us something to back to LCEC and say our rates are great thank you, or could we work on this and may lower this in the area" Sawicki Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX CENTER

BAKERY DISCRIMINATES AGAINST GAY COUPLE-PKG

THE CASE HAS SPARKED PROTESTS AND CONTROVERSY FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS.

EVER SINCE MASTERPIECE CAKE SHOP OWNER JACK PHILLIPS TOLD CHARLIE CRAIG AND DAVID MULLINS HE WOULD NOT MAKE THEM A WEDDING CAKE.

"If it's a birthday cake I don't have any problem with that my issue is I don't want to be forced to participate in same sex weddings."

PHILLIPS' ATTORNEY ARGUED TO COLORADO'S CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION THAT PHILLIPS IS OPPOSED TO SAME SEX MARRIAGE ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS.

AND FOR THE STATE TO FORCE HIM TO MAKE THE CAKE VIOLATES HIS RIGHTS.

"When a recently enacted state statute runs up against the constitution the constitution winds and a human rights tribunal has no authority to trump the united states constitution."

BUT THE COMMISSION RULED. COLORADO'S ANTI DISCRIMINATION LAWS DO NOT ALLOW BUSINESS OWNERS TO DENY SELLING A PRODUCT OR SERVICE TO SAME SEX COUPLES.

"Honestly we're thrilled."

THEY HOPE THIS CASE KEEPS DOORS OPEN FOR OTHER SAME SEX COUPLES.

"The whole point of this case and wherever it ends up is that the next time a Gay couple wanders in there asking for a wedding cake they won't have the experience we had, they will have a professional experience and they will leave feelilng that they were respected."

BUT PHILLIPS SAYS THIS CASE HURTS OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS.

HELLO-OC

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

TODAY IS SATURDAY, MAY THIRTY-FIRST 20-14.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

OBAMA HURRICANE SEASON-OC

PRESIDENT OBAMA TOURED THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY. AS THE GOVERNMENT GEARS UP FOR HURRICANE SEASON.

IT HAS BEEN NEARLY EIGHT YEARS SINCE A CATEGORY THREE HURRICANE HIT THE U-S MAINLAND. BUT EXPERTS SAY THOSE LIVING ALONG THE COAST NEED TO BE READY.

NBC'S JAY GRAY HAS MORE. Return to index of stories...

OBAMA HURRICANE SEASON-PKG

S/ Craig Fugate / Dir. FEMA:10 -:24

S/ Jay Gray / reporting

THE WATERS ARE CALM RIGHT NOW.

AND BEFORE THE WINDS. AND WAVES PICK-UP. EXPERTS SAY. THOSE IN THE POTENTIAL STRIKE ZONE NEED TO HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE.

"if you have a plan and you know what you're doing enjoy the summer. And if a storm threatens you know what to do, that's very empowering, but when people don't know what to do. the forecast is issued and the watches go up and people have questions that's when we see the anxiety go up".

AS HURRICANE SEASON OPENS THIS WEEKEND. FORECASTERS ARE PREDICTING A BELOW-AVERAGE SUMMER WITH 8-13 TROPICAL STORMS. 3-6 HURRICANES. ONE OR TWO OF THESE MAJOR STORMS.

"the seasonal forecast, it's for the scientists - for the public your message doesn't change, it's always about what people need to do to get ready".

BECAUSE IT ONLY TAKES ONE STORM TO WIPE AWAY A COMMUNITY.

TO ALTER LIVES FOREVER.

WITH THAT IN MIND, PRESIDENT OBAMA TOURED FEMA HEADQUARTERS THIS AFTERNOON. AND PROMISED THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL BE READY TO RESPOND IF A STORM STRIKES THE COAST.

"States still have the primary role in preparing for and responding to disasters, and we'll continue to make sure that they get the full resources that they need, the support they need to back them up."

SUPPORT, THOSE ALONG THE GULF AND ATLANTIC COASTS HOPE THEY'LL NEVER NEED.

911 OPERATOR "911, what is your emergency?"

EMPLOYEE: "Hi um we're being robbed."

911 OPERATOR "OK is the subject still there?"

EMPLOYEE: "Yes he is."

YOU'RE LISTENING TO ONE OF THE STORE EMPLOYEES --

ON THE PHONE WITH A 9-1-1 OPERATOR.

THE ROBBERY SUSPECT -- LATER IDENTIFIED AS AKEEN ARNOLD

WAS JUST FEET AWAY.

YOU CAN SEE HIM HERE --

IN THE OFFICE WITH STORE MANAGER DAVID ARNOLD. AKEEN'S OLDER BROTHER.

EMPLOYEE: "My customers heard the voice and they heard my manager say please don't hurt me."

THE CALL IS LESS THAN 3 MINUTES--

THAT'S HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR THE SUSPECT TO GRAB 14-GRAND IN CASH.

AND MAKE SURE THE MANAGER COULDN'T CHASE HIM OUT THE DOOR.

CALLER: "Is he ok? He's tied up and everything!!!"

5 MINUTES LATER -- A SEEMINGLY SHAKEN MANAGER CALLS 9-1-1 HIMSELF.

911 OPERATOR: "Are you injured at all?"

MANAGER: "No sir, he just, he just tied me down sir."

CUSTOMERS FOUND DAVID ON THE OFFICE FLOOR --

HIS WRISTS AND ANKLES BOUND.

THE SAFE -- WIDE OPEN.

911 OPERATOR: "And did he strike you or anything?"

MANAGER: "Yes sir he hit me in the head."

911 OPERATOR: "Did he display any type of weapon a gun, a knife anything like that?"

MANAGER: "Sir I think, it was something metal that was in my back sir."

THAT METAL SOMETHING TURNED OUT TO BE THE NOZZLE FROM A GARDEN HOSE.

POLICE CAUGHT UP WITH AKEEN A SHORT TIME LATER ON U.S. 41 IN NAPLES --

THEY SAY THEY FOUND THE CASH, A MASK, GLOVES AND THE GARDEN HOSE NOZZLE.

POLICE TELL NBC2 THEY HAVE NO REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THE ROBBERY WAS AN INSIDE JOB.

HEALTHBEAT-PLASMA

IN TODAY'S HEALTH MATTERS.

ABOUT A QUARTER MILLION AMERICANS DIE EACH YEAR, THE RESULT OF A SUDDEN HEART ATTACK.

TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE ONLY A HEARTBEAT AWAY FROM A MAJOR HEALTH CRISIS. EACH YEAR, MORE THAN 700-THOUSAND AMERICANS WILL SUFFER A HEART ATTACK.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:26 Half of them can happen very suddenly. And in those folks, they may not experience previous experiences.

A REPORT FROM THE CDC FOUND THAT 47% OF PEOPLE SUFFER A FATAL HEART ATTACK OUTSIDE OF THE HOSPITAL.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

2:17 Half of them die before they reach the hospital and majority of them are related to widow maker heart attacks.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The widow-maker is a massive heart attack- it happens when the left anterior descending artery is blocked. A clot there causes the heart to stop beating normally and patients go into cardiac arrest.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:26 When it is completely shut off there is no oxygen going to the heart muscle people can have life threatening rhythm problems during that time.

THE WIDOW MAKER MAY SEEM TO STRIKE WITHOUT WARNING- TOO SUDDEN FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE IT TO A HOSPITAL, BUT EXPERTS SAY THEY SHOULDN'T BE COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED. ⅔ OF AMERICANS WHO ARE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE FACE A HIGH RISK OF HEART DISEASE.

DR. MURALI MUPPALA/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

5:40 You need to be a little bit more aware of that and also you need to make sure you don't have other associated risk factors that include hypertension, high cholesterol levels or diabetes.

We are Mexican and we will graduate.

We are Persian but we don't carry bombs in our bags.

THIS IS HOW STUDENTS AT TORREY PINES HIGH ARE FIGHTING STEREOTYPES.

'You're not alone, I think that's what it's saying.'

HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SAVANNAH PHILLIPS IS MANAGING THE TUMBLR PAGE WHERE STUDENTS ARE UPLOADING PICTURES OF THEMSELVES AND THEIR RESPONSES TO THE HURTFUL AND RACIAL SLURS THEY'RE VICTIMS OF AT SCHOOL.

'You must be going to Harvard,'

ANTHONY NGUYEN, WANTED PEOPLE TO KNOW HE IS NOT CHINESE, HE IS NOT GOING TO HARVARD AND BY THE WAY, HESS NOT THAT GOOD AT MATH.

'Aren't you a human calculator? No!'

'like it's not just minorities affected by stereotypes,'

'everyone here is just as guilty,'

OTHER MESSAGES EXPOSED DEEP AND VERY PERSONAL STRUGGLES.

'I've been really, really proud of the courage and the openness.'

TORREY PINES TEACHER, DON HOLLINS CAME UP WITH THE IDEA AFTER SEEING A SIMILAR PAGE FROM COLLEGE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.

'The goal is to increase the awareness and respect.'

'That you might stop and check your own stereotyping and asking yourself do I really know this person and am I willing to extend myself to find that out.'

SO FAR MORE THAN A HUNDRED STUDENTS HAVE TAKEN PART IN THE PROJECT, LETTING THEIR CLASSMATES AND THE WORLD KNOW THE WAY THEY LOOK DOESN'T DEFINE THEM.
