IN 2012, MORE THAN 24-HUNDRED TEENS WERE KILLED IN CAR CRASHES, MAKING IT THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH.

ALEXA JOHNSON WAS 19-YEARS-OLD WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF HER PICKUP TRUCK ON I-25 NORTH OF DENVER LAST YEAR AND WAS THROWN THE LENGTH OF A FOOTBALL FIELD.

EVEN MORE DISTURBING:

-28% HAVE BEEN WITH A PARENT DRIVER WHO WAS ALSO TEXTING.

BERGDAHL-PKG

VO --

PRESIDENT OBAMA TODAY DEFENDED HIS ADMINISTRATION'S DECISION TO EXCHANGE SERGEANT BOWE BERGDAHL FOR FIVE TALIBAN DETAINEES THAT HAD BEEN HELD AT GUANTANAMO BAY SAYING THAT THERE SIMPLY WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO CONSULT WITH CONGRESS BEFORE THE EXCHANGE TOOK PLACE.

SAYING THAT IN THE U-S WE HAVE WHAT IS REFERRED TO AS A PRETTY SACRED RULE IN HIS LANGUAGE THAT YOU DO NOT LEAVE U-S MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM ON THE BATTLEFIELD.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID THAT ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN TALKING TO CONGRESS FOR SOME TIME ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF A PRISONER EXCHANGE, AND WHEN THIS WINDOW OPENED, THIS OPPORTUNITY BECAME AVAILABLE, THE U-S DECIDED TO SEIZE IT.

SERGEANT BERGDAHL HIMSELF HAS NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT WITH HIS FAMILY YET.

HE IS STILL BEING CARED FOR AT A U-S BASE IN GERMANY.

PRESIDENT OBAMA TODAY DISMISSED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING BERGDAHL'S DISAPPEARANCE FROM HIS POST IN AFGHANISTAN IN 2009.

"Regardless of the circumstances, whatever those circumstances may turn out to be, we still get an American soldier back if he's held in captivity. Period. Full stop. We don't condition that."

ALSO TODAY PRESIDENT OBAMA ACKNOWLEDGED THE POSSIBILITY THAT THOSE FIVE TALIBAN DETAINEES COULD ONCE AGAIN TRY TO THREATEN THE U-S OR U-S FORCES, BUT OBAMA SAID THAT HE WOULD NOT HAVE GONE THROUGH WITH THIS EXCHANGE IF HE THOUGHT IT POSED A RISK TO NATIONAL SECURITY INTERESTS.

"Today we also heard from the head of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey, who said that there is a separation between the question of Sergeant Bergdahl's conduct and the decision being made to recover any U.S. soldier on the battlefield. He said that Bergdahl was innocent until proven guilty, but he said if there does prove to be any evidence of misconduct that they, the Army, will not look away from that. NBC News has also learned today that the Army is proceeding with a high level inquiry to look into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and the capture of Sergeant Bergdahl in 2009. Traveling with the President in Warsaw, Poland, I'm Peter Alexander, NBC News." Return to index of stories...

"It was a lot of fried foods it was quick easy but to look back I can't believe I used to eat that and that much of it and now because of what we're doing I don't crave that stuff anymore."

ANGIE SAYS WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN SOME BUMPS ALONG THE WAY, THE FAMILY IS COMMITTED TO STAYING TO COURSE AND CHANGING THEIR LIFESTYLE FOR GOOD.

"It's a battle it's not easy and it's nice that we're doing it as a family and everyone is on board and cheering each other on."
