An estimated 16 thousand drivers drive over these bridges on Sanibel.

The concern- what lies underneath

Cracks almost invisible to the naked eye.

Since that time the county has been on a fact finding mission trying

Despite local leaders insistence the bridges are safe- some locals

fear a larger threat is hanging over.

Take sot:

"No, there's not a big concern, they certainly want to watch it,

there's a 75 year useful life on the causeway we want to make sure get

all 75 years out of the causeway" Doug Congress, Vice Mayor Sanibel

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDY WITH AN ISOLATED CHANCE FOR RAIN

Tuesday morning starts with plenty of clouds and temperatures in the low to mid 70s in Southwest Florida. We will continue to see mainly cloudy skies today and afternoon high temperatures will only reach into the mid to upper 80s. Today will be a much drier day than yesterday, but there will still be a few isolated showers and possibly a storm in the area. The best chance for seeing that shower will be near the coastline during the mid afternoon time frame.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, we'll see mostly cloudy skies and coverage of rain will remain low. Afternoon highs will reach into the upper 80s. The rain coverage will likely go up a bit on Thursday. Then up even more on Friday and Saturday. Those will likely be the 2 wettest days out of the next 7. Return to index of stories...

SINCE THE 2008 STOCK MARKET COLLAPSE, MONEY HAS BEEN POURING INTO A NEW TYPE OF INVESTMENT CLASS CALLED "ALTERNATIVE FUNDS".

THIS NEW FUND CLASS SUPPOSEDLY PROVIDES CONSISTENT RETURNS WHETHER THE STOCK MARKET GOES UP OR DOWN.

JIM NOLTE FROM WELLS FARGO ADVISORS IS WITH US TODAY TO DISCUSS THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS NEW INVESTMENT STRATEGY. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG

When investors saw 40% plus declines in their portfolios in 2008, there was a natural tendency to look for a better way to invest money.

· Wall Street has never been timid about promoting new investment strategies and products. After the market meltdown in 2008, the new buzz phrase was "non-market correlated investment strategies".

· A simpler term was "alternative mutual funds".

· Alternative mutual funds cover a wide range of investment strategies. The universal goal of those strategies is to make money whether the stock market goes up or down.

· The focus of these alternative funds however is to protect assets in a down market. These strategies attempt to produce decent returns with limited risk.

· There are a variety of classifications for Alternative Mutual funds. These Include Long/Short Equity Funds, Multi-Alternative Funds, Market Neutral Funds, Managed Futures and Bear Market Funds.

· Since 2008, alternative mutual funds have grown faster than any other fund class according to Morningstar Investor Services. In the first four months of this year $11.6 billion flowed into alternative funds.

· Bear Market funds bet that the stock market will decline. Not surprisingly bear market funds had been big losers in this current bull market. As a matter of fact, bear market funds posted an average annual return of -26.8% for the last five years through the end of May. That compares with an 18.4% annualized return for the S & P 500 stock index.

· To be fair, in 2008, bear market funds returned nearly 30% on average as the S & P 500 dropped nearly 40%.

· Other types of alternative funds have done better than bear market funds in this recent bull market. As a whole, however, alternative funds have lagged behind the S&P 500 over the last five years

· Long/Short funds have been the most popular for the last three years attracting over $35 billion. These funds attempt to make money when the market is going up and when it declines.

· Multi-alternative funds have also been popular with investors depositing $19.8 billion in the strategy over the last three years. Multi-alternative funds use a variety of strategies depending on current market conditions to generate high returns and potentially reduce risk.

· Managed futures funds currently have far fewer assets than other alternative fund strategies. Managed futures funds invest in commodity related strategies that in most cases are inflation driven. Many analysts felt that inflation would be a big problem for our economy. Although inflation has begun to creep up, at this time the inflation rate remains low.

· Because of current inflation rates, Managed Futures Funds have underperformed the S&P 500.

· Alternative funds were designed for a flat to down market. Due to the strength of the stock market over the past few years, alternative funds have had disappointing returns.

· Despite the poor performance, investors continue to invest in these funds because they worry that the market will pull back sharply.

· Should you invest in alternative funds? I believe that alternative funds should be viewed as portfolio insurance and they certainly have a place in a portfolio.

· For most investors a better strategy would be to concentrate on maintaining and investment allocation that complements your risk profile

· alternative funds are different, but over the last few years, certainly not better. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-ONCAM

STICKING TO A SCHEDULE IS GOOD ADVICE FOR MOST OF US- AND IT HOLDS TRUE FOR KIDS AND THEIR SHOT SCHEDULE.

HEALTH EXPERTS BELIEVE RECENT WHOOPING COUGH OUTBREAKS ARE DUE TO PEOPLE EITHER NOT GETTING VACCINATED OR SKIPPING THEIR FOLLOW UP BOOSTER.

AMY OSHIER HAS MORE IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS REPORT. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

WHEN IT COMES TO ARMING YOUR LOVED ONES AGAINST WHOOPING COUGH, IT IS NOT A ONE-SHOT DEAL.

Dr. Anthony Pietroniro/Pediatrician

RUNS:

1:04 In the past few years, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control have recommended getting another booster for pertussis at 11 years of age.

SO IN ADDITION TO JUST TETANUS AND Diphtheria, KIDS GET ANOTHER DOSE OF THE PERTUSSIS VACCINE- TO PREVENT WHOOPING COUGH. EXPERTS SAY IT'S NEEDED AS THE NUMBER OF CASES CONTINUE TO RISE.

Dr. Anthony Pietroniro/Pediatrician

RUNS:

5:11 Immunization is two-fold. One, it's to protect the people who are most vulnerable, which is why we start that series at two months of age. 5:45 And as we mentioned 5:33 What we try to do is create a cocoon of people who are immunized until that newborn has had a chance to receive the vaccine series.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Infants face the most danger from whooping cough- it can lead to hospitalization even death. Teens and adults are likely to have milder symptoms- like a prolonged cough. They usually get it when their immunity has faded between shots or by skipping the vaccine altogether.

Dr. Anthony Pietroniro/Pediatrician

RUNS:

:22 I would say probably every year there's usually one or two cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, that come to our practice.

A RECENT ONE INVOLVED A CHILD WHO WAS NEARING THE BOOSTER STAGE.

Dr. Anthony Pietroniro/Pediatrician

RUNS:

3:00 I believe at the second visit with a complaint that the cough was no better and had been going on for weeks, it was decided to do a nasal swab to test them for pertussis and it did come back positive.

SPREAD BY RESPIRATORY DROPLETS THE SICKNESS IS MOST CONTAGIOUS DURING THE FIRST FEW WEEKS, COUGHING CAN LAST FOR MONTHS AND FOR THE VERY YOUNG, A CASE OF WHOOPING COUGH CAN BE LIFE-CHANGING. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

"Our campaign had absolutely no connection with that whatsoever."

"You personally… when did you find out about the break in?"

"Look we're going to focus on his record."

AS FOR COCHRAN, HE ARGUES HIS RECORD IS EXACTLY WHY HE SHOULD GET RE-ELECTED THAT HIS SENIORITY IN THE SENATE IS A PLUS FOR MISSISSIPPI, BUT 42 YEAR OLD MCDANIEL SAYS COCHRAN'S TIME HAS PASSED FOR MISSISSIPPI AND THE GOP.

"He believes in big spending. He believes in increasing taxes. He believes in increasing his own pay. I am not that guy."

THE TEA PARTY MOVEMENT HAS A LOT RIDING ON A MCDANIEL WIN HERE, AFTER A STRING OF PRIMARY LOSSES THIS ELECTION YEAR.

TEA PARTY GROUPS NATIONWIDE ACROSS, HAVE SPENT MILLIONS.

"They've really poured their heart and soul into making you the guy who they can hang their hat on and say that 'we're not losing this election here.' That's a lot of pressure."

"It's all in God's hands. There's no pressure. God has a plan." Return to index of stories...
