HERE'S A STORY THAT ALL PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS NEED TO HEAR.

THE LATEST SAFE DRIVING PSA FROM THE GOVERNMENT IS DESIGNED TO TERRIFY BOTH TEENS AND THEIR PARENTS:

IT IS GRITTY AND HAUNTING.

AND THIS IS THE REAL WORLD: DRIVE-CAM VIDEO OF DISTRACTED TEENS RUNNING OFF THE ROAD.

.OR RUNNING A RED LIGHT.

IN 2012, MORE THAN 24-HUNDRED TEENS WERE KILLED IN CAR CRASHES, MAKING IT THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH.

ALEXA JOHNSON WAS 19-YEARS-OLD WHEN SHE LOST CONTROL OF HER PICKUP TRUCK ON I-25 NORTH OF DENVER LAST YEAR AND WAS THROWN THE LENGTH OF A FOOTBALL FIELD.

POLICE SAY SHE WAS LIKELY DISTRACTED AND WASN'T WEARING HER SEAT BELT.

TAD JOHNSON/ALEXA'S FATHER: "WHEN WE OPENED UP THE FRONT DOOR AND SAW THE BADGE AND THE HAT , YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY ANOTHER WORD. I KNEW WHY THEY WERE THERE."

NOW, A NEW STUDY CONDUCTED BY SAFEKIDS WORLDWIDE HAS FOUND:

-25% OF THE TEENS SURVEYED ADMIT THEY DON'T BUCKLE UP ON EVERY RIDE.

-39% HAVE RIDDEN WITH A TEEN DRIVER WHO WAS TEXTING.

EVEN MORE DISTURBING:

-28% HAVE BEEN WITH A PARENT DRIVER WHO WAS ALSO TEXTING.

KATE CARR/SAFEKIDS WORLDWIDE: "TEENS WHO WERE TEXTING OFTEN HAD PARENTS WHO WERE TEXTING OR ON THE PHONE AND INVOLVED IN DISTRACTED DRIVING."

STANDUP, TOM COSTELLO/NBC NEWS/GLEN ECHO, MD: "TEEN DRIVING IS ALREADY RISKY ENOUGH. JUST HAVING SOMEONE UNDER THE AGE OF 21 IN A CAR WITH A TEEN DRIVER INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH BY 44%. TWO TEEN PASSENGERS DOUBLES THE RISK!"

SOT: "IT UH, KEEPS ALEXA VERY CLOSE TO US."

THE MEN SEEN HERE IN VIDEO RELEASED BY AN AFGHAN NEWS AGENCY WERE GREETED AS HEROES WHEN THEY LANDED IN QATAR.

FOR YEARS THEY HAD BEEN CONSIDERED EXTREMELY DANGEROUS BY THE U-S GOVERNMENT.

I don't think anyone harbors any illusions about these five guys and what they might do if they're transferred.

THAT STANCE CHANGED SATURDAY. WHEN THE MEN WERE ALLOWED TO LEAVE GUANTANAMO BAY.

AMONG THE DETAINEES ARE: KHAIR ULLA SAID WALI KHAIRKHWA.

HE WAS PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED BY THE U-S TO HAVE TIES TO OSAMA BIN LADEN. HE WAS SERVING A SENIOR TALIBAN OFFICIAL WHEN HE WAS CAPTURED IN 2002.

MULLAH MOHAMMED FAZIL ALLEGEDLY ALSO HAD TIES TO AL QAEDA.

AS THE TALIBAN ARMY'S CHIEF OF STAFF, HE WAS WANTED BY THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE MASSACRE OF THOUSANDS OF AFGHAN SHIITES.

MULLAH NORULLAH NOORI WAS THE FORMER GOVERNOR OF TWO AFGHAN PROVINCES. BUT TOLD THE U-S HE WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE TALIBAN.

A DETAINEE ASSESSMENT RELEASED BY WIKI-LEAKS CHARACTERIZED HIM AS A HIGH RISK AND HAVING HIGH INTELLIGENCE VALUE

U-S INTELLIGENCE SOURCES ONCE SAID ABDUL HAQ WASIQ WAS SECOND IN COMMAND IN THE TALIBAN'S INTELLIGENCE SERVICE WITH LINKS TO AL QAEDA.

HE CLAIMED HE WAS ARRESTED WHILE TRYING TO HELP THE U.S. LOCATE SENIOR TALIBAN FIGURES.

FINALLY, MOHAMMAD NABI OMARI, THE TALIBAN'S CHIEF OF COMMUNICATIONS. HE REPORTEDLY HELPED AL QAEDA MEMBERS ESCAPE FROM AFGHANISTAN TO PAKISTAN.

TONIGHT. ALL FIVE MEN ARE NOW OUT OF U-S CUSTODY. BUT ARE APPARENTLY STILL BEING WATCHED BY FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICES.
