Cause for concern-

Cracks on the Sanibel Causeway

"This bridge ain't by maybe five at that and you said it's good for 75

years, that's something to think about"

Longtime Lee County resident Abel Ramos considers it a looming threat hanging right over his family's head.

"We fish under here, I wouldn't want some accident happening"

Lee county department of transportation officials say- there's no danger here.

The cracks have been on their radar since 2012.

Five years after the 3 new bridges went up.

In 2003 the NBC2 investigators also uncovered issues with the original causeway- prompting construction of this current causeway.

"This is the latest set of inspections, we're continually monitoring

the condition on the bridge"

"The challenge- some of these cracks are reportedly smaller than a pencil head. Which is why one of these will come in handy." George Solis

During past inspections- crews have told NBC2 design flaws have nothing

to do with the cracks- but more likely concrete that didn't settle

properly

"Everything that I've been told they're comfortable there are no

structural or safety issues, but it's something that we need to

monitor" Doug Congress, Sanibel Vice Mayor

City and county officials hope tomorrow's inspection paints a better picture at finding a solution to the problem keep locals like Ramos confidence from cracking too.

"Even a piece of rock, you said it was hairline cracks, from hairline cracks you get chunks coming off" Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

LOW CHANCE FOR RAIN

Coastal locations in southwest Florida - particularly Marco Island and Everglades City - saw some passing showers today while most of the area was dry. Our cloudy weather will persist this evening as temperatures drop into the mid/lower 70's. A few rain showers could linger along the beaches of Lee and Collier counties early this evening.

The lower chance for rain kicks in tomorrow with a pretty good looking forecast. While it won't be bright and sunny all day, skies should only be partly cloudy by the afternoon on Wednesday. A push of dry air down the Florida peninsula will keep most rain showers away from the area tomorrow and our First Alert Doppler Radar will keep track of the rain in the Gulf and off shore. High temperatures tomorrow will top out in the upper 80's and stay just shy of 90 degrees.

The long-range forecast shows a return of our afternoon showers and storms by Thursday and we will likely forecast the same thing for the weekend ahead. Highs will be back in the lower 90's as we move toward the weekend.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
