U-S SPECIAL FORCES SWEEP UP BERGDAHL, CHECK HIM FOR EXPLOSIVES, THEN CARRY HIM AWAY.

AS MORE DETAILS COME OUT ABOUT HIS RESCUE, MORE QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT HIS DISAPPEARANCE.

INVESTIGATORS REVIEWING HIS CASE WILL INTERVIEW BERGDAHL -- BUT NOT YET. THE ARMY INSISTS ITS FIRST PRIORITY IS HIS HEALTH AND HIS REINTEGRATION.

.SOMETHING KEITH STANSELL KNOWS A LITTLE ABOUT.

"I think the biggest challenge initially is the overwhelming emotional shock."

AFTER BERGDAHL'S DISAPPEARANCE IN 2009, THE ARMY'S INITIAL INVESTIGATION CONCLUDED HE LEFT HIS OUTPOST DELIBERATELY, LEAVING BEHIND HIS WEAPON, BULLET-PROOF VEST, AND NIGHT VISION GOGGLES. THE ARMY DIDN'T CALL HIM A DESERTER, BECAUSE WITHOUT SPEAKING TO HIM, THEY COULDN'T UNDERSTAND HIS INTENT.

RETIRED SERGEANT JOSH KORDER BELIEVES HE DOES.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A SHORT BREAK FROM THE RAIN

Drier air is working its way into Southwest Florida today. We'll still see mostly cloudy skies this morning with conditions going toward partly cloudy this afternoon. That means we'll get to see some sunshine. As far as rain chances, they are very limited today. The vast majority of the area stays dry. Yesterday, many of us missed the rain, but the southern parts of our area had rather persistent showers through much of the midday and afternoon. If that includes you, those persistent showers are gone today and you don't have much to worry about. At most there could be a few isolated late evening showers. That's it for today. Afternoon highs will be warmer as we head up to 89 degrees.

A few afternoon showers and storms return tomorrow. Then through the end of the week and into the weekend, we'll have more of those scattered afternoon downpours. Highs will be near 90 degrees and lows will be in the low to mid 70s. Return to index of stories...

CUSTOMER STOPS ROBBER SAVES CLERK-PKG

This isn't exactly stand your ground but this is what stand your ground was written for.

WRITTEN FOR AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS - A CUSTOMER STEPPING IN TO SAVE A CLERK'S LIFE FROM AN ARMED ROBBER. 37-YEAR OLD ANTHONY SHEBESTER WAS AT THE COUNTER BUYING CIGARETTES.WHEN THE BAD GUY CAME IN WITH HIS FACE COVERED AND JUMPED OVER THE COUNTER WITH A BOX CUTTER. SHEBESTER THOUGHT FAST, PULLED OUT A POCKET KNIFE AND WENT OVER TO HELP THE 61 YEAR OLD CONVENIENCE STORE CLERK. THE TWO TUSSLED AND SHEBESTER STABBED THE ROBBER IN THE CHEST.MINUTES LATER, HE DIED.

This is kind of the opposite of what you see in the Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin cases and those sort of things where you have a video of the ability of somebody to show a reasonable fear of eminent death or great bodily harm.

I WATCHED THE SURVEILLANCE VIDEO WITH ATTORNEY RANDY REEP WHO USED TO BE A PROSECUTOR. HE SAYS IT'S PERFECTLY LEGAL TO USE DEADLY FORCE TO DEFEND ANOTHER'S LIFE.

It's interesting because if you're wrong, you're responsible for all the things you would be responsible for if it wasn't reasonable that you used deadly force.

SHEBESTER'S DAD SAYS THEY APPRECIATE THE OUTPOURING OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT BUT HIS SON IS HAVING A HARD TIME SLEEPING AT NIGHT AND DOES NOT WANT TO BE CALLED A "HERO."

He said 'how can I be a hero when somebody died?'

THE ROBBER WAS 42-YEAR OLD JEFF LOHMAN, WHO'S MOM SHOWED UP AT SHEBESTER'S HOME AND HUGGED HIM.

She said I just want to come over and I want to congratulate you that you saved that store clerk's life, that my son would've possibly killed him because he needed his drug money and he has been on drugs.

LOHMAN'S MOM WAS AFRAID SOMETHING LIKE THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. AND ALTHOUGH SHE LOVED HER TROUBLED SON, KNOWS SHEBESTER DID WHAT HE HAD TO.

Reporter: Randy do you think there's any chance that this man could be charged with murder?"

No, certainly not correctly. That is self-defense or the defense of another, clear, almost law school textbook of the circumstances where you're allowed to do that and he did it appropriately. Return to index of stories...

BEAR COMES TO BREAKFAST-ON CAM

A UTAH MAN IS SENT SCRAMBLING UP THE STAIRS INSIDE HIS CABIN IN THE WOODS -- AFTER A BEAR OPENS HIS FRONT DOOR AND WALKS IN!

GENE KENNEDY REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BEAR COMES TO BREAKFAST-PKG

"Spencer Ball has lived in this cabin since 1991 but says this was a first. a young black bear roaming his deck for food. so much so, it just walked in the front door as if it was a guest."

THIS IN THE BEAR.2-3 YEARS-OLD.AROUND 8:30 MONDAY MORNING.

"It went up to that hummingbird feeder."

"It just licked it for about 10 minutes."

BUT ONCE IT SMELLED A BUCKET FULL OF PEANUTS INSIDE THE FRONT DOOR.

"The bear went and took this handle and put it down and I saw it moving inside and that bear came right in the house and stood right here and looked around."

'I started to go up these stairs and i was looking at the bear from a safe distance."

"Did it make eye contact with you?"

"It looked everywhere and was aware I was here."

BALL CALLED 9-1-1, THEN GRABBED A PISTOL AND BARRICADED HIMSELF UPSTAIRS. ESSENTIALLY HELD HOSTAGE IN HIS CABIN.

"If a bear was in my house, it could do anything, I was afraid that it could attack me."

THE BEAR DIDN'T COME AFTER HIM OR RANSACK HIS HOME.

INSTEAD, IT JUST KEPT EATING THOSE PEANUTS.

A COUPLE HOURS LATER, AS THIS VIDEO SHOWS, BIOLOGISTS FROM THE DIVISIONS OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES ARRIVED AND TRANQUILIZED THE BEAR.

"I guess when he was hit with the dart, he took off running and went down right over that ledge there."

BUT WILDLIFE OFFICIALS WERE ABLE TO TRAP THE ANIMAL AND LATER RELEASED INTO THE WILD.

"We reversed it with a reversal drug and it snapped right out of being sleepy and we moved it to spanish fork canyon and released it in an area that's away from campers, cabins, livestock, etc."

"Whether it's food from a grill or hummingbird feeders, it's the odor that's the concern when it comes to attracting bears. And DWR officials say that's something to think about this time of year whether you're camping or you're a cabin owner. in big cottonwood canyon, Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

"This is not simply the effects of the Great Recession, where the value of all investments dropped. This is really a systemic problem. This is a problem of politicians over-promising and of actuarial assumptions not coming to fruition."

OFFICIALS SAY ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS ABOUT REFORMING LOCAL PENSION PLANS IS--

MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE HOW MUCH THE PLANS ARE COSTING TAXPAYERS. Return to index of stories...

FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS- CHRONIC PAIN GETS IN THE WAY OF ENJOYING- EVEN FUNCTIONING- IN EVERYDAY LIFE. SO AN INCREASING NUMBER ARE TURNING TO PAIN MANAGEMENT TO TAKE THE STRESS OFF.

DR. GENE MAHANEY/PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

RUNS:

3:36 A lot of times patients can't be fixed, quite honestly. And what you're trying to do is maximize their ability to lead a functional life.

A FREQUENTLY USED OPTION IS INJECTION THERAPY, WHICH PIN-POINTS PAIN AT ITS SOURCE. TREATMENT WAS BASED MOSTLY ON STEROIDS AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS. UNTIL NOW.

DR. GENE MAHANEY/PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

RUNS:

1:56 Sometimes, homeopathic medicines can be used very efficiently to get good relief for patients' pain.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

People who have little response to traditional injections or are reluctant to use them, may be interested in the growing trend toward nature-based injectables.

DR. GENE MAHANEY/PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

RUNS:

2:28 They're naturally occurring substances that do not have any interactions with medications in the body.

2:06 We use medications such as Traumeel. Zeel is another one that's commonly used in Europe. Sarapin is a pitcher plant extract that is seemingly without any toxicity for the human body but seems to block a lot of pain receptors at the same time.

DOCTORS FIND THE NATURALLY-OCCURRING SUBSTANCES MAY RELIEVE PAIN FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME THAN TYPICAL STEROID INJECTIONS. AND WHILE PATIENTS ARE GETTING RELIEF, THEY ARE ALSO GETTING PEACE OF MIND.

2-SHOT 1

RUNS:

:36 Patients are very appreciative when we can use something that's naturopathic or homeopathic that they don't need to worry about will conflict with their existing medications in any way.

AN OPTION THAT MIGHT BE WORTH EXPLORING- FOR PEOPLE WILLING TO TAKE A SHOT AT A NEW FORM OF PAIN MANAGEMENT. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
