CHANGES AHEAD TO CLOSE THE WORK WEEK

It was fairly dry and fairly pleasant day across Southwest Florida Thursday, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. Expect quiet conditions this evening as temps fall into the 70s. Overnight tonight will feature partly cloudy skies and lows in the low 70s.

Changes begin to arrive as we move into Friday. More moisture will work into the area, resulting in a touch more cloud cover. It will bring a slightly better chance for PM showers and storms across the region. Highs on Friday will be in the low 90s.

The tropical moisture rolls back into Southwest Florida for the weekend, bringing an even better chance of showers and storms.

We'll see dry conditions in the morning with scattered showers and storms developing both Saturday and Sunday. Highs for the weekend will be in the low 90s.

Once the wet weather pattern arrives, it will stay for most of next week. Expect morning sun and PM showers and storms Monday thru Wednesday, with highs holding in the low 90s.

There is some uncertainty as to how the back end of next week will play out. Right now, expect a chance of scattered PM storms both Thursday and Friday.

TROPICAL UPDATE

The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a disturbance in the Bay of Campeche. This system is producing flooding rains along eastern Mexico and has winds approaching 35 mph. The hurricane center gives this system a 30% chance of developing over the next 48 hours.

The system could have an indirect effect of our weather late next week, but that is highly uncertain.

Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

AS MARKETS CONTINUE TO HIT NEW ALL-TIME HIGHS, INVESTORS ARE WONDERING JUST HOW MUCH HIGHER STOCKS WILL GO BEFORE WE SEE A PULL-BACK.

NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE RECENT HIGHS, WHAT'S DRIVING MARKETS, AND ONE INVESTMENT TOOL. INVESTORS CAN CONSIDER TO CREATE MORE PREDICTABILITY IN THEIR RETIREMENT PLAN BEFORE A MARKET PULL-BACK.

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELSS FARGO-PLASMA

· I'll tell you, the strength and length of this bull market rally has surprised a lot of us. Since the market lows of March 2009, the S&P 500 has rallied an amazing 190%. When you average that out over the past five years, that's an impressive 38% annual return. But what I think is equally impressive is the lack of any material pullback or correction in the markets in over two years now. And a lot of investors and analysts are wondering just how much higher can market go until we see a market correction. This has been the most anticipated correction that hasn't happened in over two years now. One thing is for sure though. Stock market corrections are as inevitable as they are a normal part of a stock market cycle.

So, to gain some perspective on how frequently pullbacks and corrections happen let's look at some historical market data. Since 1950, the market, on average, has pulled back 5% or more three times a year. It has pulled back 10% or more at least once a year.

Markets pullback 15% or more once every two years and 20% or more about once every three and a half years. The last correction or 10% pullback in the markets occurred over two years ago between April and early June of 2012. So from a historical standpoint, we are overdue for a correction.

· For a little bit more perspective, let's take a look at the frequency of bear markets, that is when markets pullback at least 20% from their recent highs. Since 1929, there have been 16 bear markets. The average bear market begins every 4.8 years. The last bear market the S&P 500 saw started back in October 2007 putting the length of the current rally in the absence of a bear market now at almost 7 years. And the longest markets have gone without a bear market was right at ten years between 1946 and 1956.

Now, although past performance is no indicator of future results in the market, I would argue that not only are we overdue for a correction, statistically speaking we will be due for a bear market sometime in the next couple of years. That's not to say markets can't go higher from here. In fact, the environment we find ourselves in right now is like no other we've ever seen. It's kind of an incubator for the stock market. And what I'm referring to is the 0% interest rate environment that's driving investors away from cash and fixed income where the prospects for income and growth are limited into riskier assets like stocks and real estate that provide the opportunity for greater capital appreciation in the long term. Additionally, better economic indicators and solid earnings from corporate America are helping to lift stocks higher.

· So, knowing that there is a pretty good likelihood that a correction and/or bear market will occur sometime in the next two years, here are two suggestions. First, review your overall portfolio and make sure your asset allocation is appropriate for your risk tolerance. And second, consider converting some of your portfolio into an annuity with an income benefit rider that can provide you a guaranteed income stream for life. Since most investors' portfolios are at their highest levels in many years, this is a great opportunity to maximize the initial income benefit base in an annuity. Call your financial advisor today to discuss the different features and benefits annuities can provide and to make sure your investments are well positioned in the event we do see a pullback in the markets. STUDENT LOAN DEBT-TRX-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

GRADUATION SEASON HAS PUT U-S STUDENT LOAN DEBT BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT, EVEN ON CAPITOL HILL.

The Treasury Secretary remarked the student debt is hampering our economy across multiple sectors of society, and the Federal Reserve identified student debt as a risk to aggregate household spending.

ACCORDING TO A PEW RESEARCH STUDY, ABOUT 37 PERCENT OF YOUNG U-S HOUSEHOLDS CARRY STUDENT DEBT. AND IN A UNCERTAIN JOB MARKET, THE PRESSURE TO PAY BACK CAN BE OVERWHELMING. BRITTANY JONES TOLD HER STORY TO A SENATE COMMITTEE.

The numbers did not add up. I worked as many as three jobs at once just to make the monthly payments.

IN THOSE TOUGH FINANCIAL SITUATIONS, SKIPPING PAYMENTS MAY SEEM LIKE THE ONLY OPTION, BUT THAT SHORT-TERM DECISION, CAN HAVE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES.

One of the mistakes often made - the default rate on student loans is as high as 30 percent. Don't ever think that that loan isn't going to impact your credit score.

A POOR CREDIT SCORE CAN DASH HOPES OF BUYING A HOME, A CAR, AND EVEN A CHANCE AT CERTAIN JOBS.

OFTEN, LENDERS CAN WORK OUT A PLAN THAT ALLOWS FOR SMALLER MONTHLY PAYMENTS.

The problem here, is that you're paying more money in interest over the life of the loan. So you're trading that short-term relief for some long-term pain. Nonetheless, if you can't afford the monthly payments, this might be your only option.

SO IF GRADS HAVE LOANS WITH GRACE PERIODS, THEY SHOULD USE IT TO RESEARCH EVERY OPTION -- FROM REPAYMENT PLANS, TO FEDERAL LOAN FORGIVENESS FOR CERTAIN PROFESSIONS LIKE TEACHING OR PUBLIC SERVICE -- TO BE PREPARED WHEN THE FIRST BILLS ARRIVE.

IN WASHINGTON, I'M KARIN CAIFA. Return to index of stories...

EARLY DETECTION CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT CANCER.

AND MANY OF THE GREATEST SUCCESSES ARE DUE TO WIDE-SPREAD SCREENING.

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

IT'S BEEN CALLED THE '15 MINUTES THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE'. SCREENING FOR HEAD & NECK CANCER IS A SMALL TIME INVESTMENT THAT MAY HELP DOCTORS FIND A PROBLEM WHEN IT'S MOST TREATABLE.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:01: We would love to screen lots more people- the earlier we catch any cancer greatly increases the chance of curing it.

HEAD AND NECK CANCERS INCLUDE ANY CANCER ABOVE THE COLLAR BONE-OUTSIDE THE BRAIN. DENTISTS COMMONLY SCREEN THE MOUTH AND TONGUE- BUT DOCTORS PERFORM A THOROUGH EXAM.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:50: It's not invasive at all, we look at the skin of the face and the neck. We look in the nose, we look in the mouth, in the throat, we look at the voice box and feel on the neck.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Unlike cancer screens that are linked to very specific tests, like a mammogram, a colonoscopy, the PSA or PAP test- oral cancer screenings look for signs and symptoms. Including ones that you should share with your doctor.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

7:33 Any sore that doesn't heal in the mouth, on the skin, in the nose, it's something that does not heal you've got to be concerned about it. If you're hoarse more than three weeks you've got to have somebody look at it.

NEW OR UNUSUAL PAINS CAN ALSO BE A RED FLAG.

DR. PHILLIP ANDREWS/OTOLARYNGOLOGIST

RUNS:

8:02 Pain in the throat, difficulty swallowing that does not go away after two or three weeks. Pain in the ear that is unexplained could be coming from a throat cancer. Because the nerve that supplies the two areas is the same.

A LUMP IN THE NECK SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED OUT. HEAD AND NECK CANCERS SEEM TO SNEAK UP ON PEOPLE, SO IF YOU SUSPECT AN ORAL CANCER- SPEAK UP. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED IN 36 YEARS. WHICH IS WHY ALL EYES ARE NOW ON CALIFORNIA CHROME.

TRAINER/OWNER: "Good luck in the Triple Crown."

AND HIS HUMAN HALF, VICTOR ESPINOZA.

"Is California Chrome that horse?"

"I hope so. Crossing my fingers "

WITH CALIFORNIA CHROME ON THE EAST COAST AWAITING THE BELMONT STAKES. ESPINOZA GOT INTO TOP RACING FORM HERE ON THE WEST COAST.

HIS ROUTINE IS STRICT.

BUILDING HIS MUSCLES. SO HE CAN CONTROL THE HORSE.

AND BUILDING HIS LUNGS. SO HE CAN GO THE DISTANCE.

BUT MUCH OF HIS TRAINING. CENTERS AROUND RIDING *OTHER* HORSES. SO HE CAN STAY AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME.

"Do you figure out pretty quickly if you guys have a good feel for each other?"

"Yep. yep."

HE SAYS. WITH CALIFORNIA CHROME. THE BOND WAS INSTANT.

"I let him know that I'm in control. I'm the boss. He has to do what I say."

NOW. ESPINOZA IS ONE VICTORY AWAY FROM HISTORY. A HARROWING POSITION. HE KNOWS ALL TOO WELL.

"You've been in this spot before - one win away from the Triple Crown. What happened in 2002?"

"Oh, everything went wrong. That's what happened."

AT THE BELMONT STAKES. HIS HORSE, "WAR EMBLEM," STUMBLED OUT OF THE GATE.

"He's lucky to stay on him, as a matter of fact."

"Everything went away in a second -- a tenth of a second -- and that was it."

ESPINOZA FEELS HIS ODDS ARE BETTER. WITH CALIFORNIA CHROME.

THEY'RE NOW REUNITED IN NEW YORK. AND PREPPING FOR THE BIG DAY.

KNOWING THAT IN HORSE RACING. A TRUE KING. NEEDS 3 CROWNS.

"And that elusive prize, the Triple Crown, awaits California Chrome in the Belmont Stakes."

A COLORADO MAN IS BREAKING HIS SILENCE FROM BEHIND BARS -- SPEAKING OUT ABOUT SPENDING THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN PRISON.

RENE LIMA-MARIN WAS 19-YEARS-OLD WHEN HE ROBBED TWO VIDEO STORES ARMED WITH A GUN.

HE SERVED 10 YEARS AND WAS RELEASED.

BUT THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A MISTAKE.

HIS CASE WAS AGGRESSIVELY PROSECUTED UNDER A PROGRAM WHICH IS NO LONGER IN USE.

TAMMY VIGIL REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BACK TO JAIL FOR 90 YEARS-PKG

"It's that every day, happy, white-picket-fence type of life."

RENE LIMA-MARIN HAD IT ALL: A WIFE, KIDS, A HOME.

IT'S A LIFE HE NEVER IMAGINED COULD BE HIS AS A CONVICTED FELON.

"What makes this that much harder, is the fact I constantly have them right here."

it's a life that vanished overnight January 7, when a judge sent him back to prison to finish a 98-year sentence.

"98 years for what? You know, for what?"

IT'S A SENTENCE HIS appeals lawyer told him WAS JUST 16 years.

"She came to visit me, said you no longer have 98 years, you basically are given 16 years, which is what we were fighting for anyway."

BUT HER INFORMATION WAS WRONG - AS WAS THE COURT FILE SENT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS STATING HIS SENTENCES SHOULD RUN ALL AT ONCE, INSTEAD OF BACK-TO-BACK.

"I would have never had a wife. I would have never had children. I would have never bought a house. I would have never done any of those things. But I did those because you let me out. And now they are being punished for something they had absolutely nothing to do with."

IT'S A PUNISHMENT HE SAYS IS EXCESSIVE.

"People have raped, molested kids, taken lives and had 15, 20, 25 years. And I made a mistake and tried to steal some money and I am given my entire life in prison?"

A PUNISHMENT HE SAYS IS WRONG.

"I acknowledge the fact that I did something wrong, I take responsibility for the fact that I did something wrong. But I also believe I completed the punishment."

A PUNISHMENT HE SAYS BREAKS UP HIS FAMILY.

"And not only for me, because I know that seems somewhat selfish, because it hurts me. But it hurts them as well."

RENE SERVED 10 YEARS WITH EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOR - NOT WRITTEN UP EVEN ONCE. AND WHEN HE GOT OUT, HE PLEDGED HE'D NEVER DO ANYTHING TO GO BACK.

"That's all I want people to see, is that I'm not that guy. I don't deserve 98 years. I deserve the time that I did." Return to index of stories...
