FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

INCREASING RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

It was a warm and humid Friday across the region, with temps pushing into the low 90s. A few isolated showers may pop up inland this evening, but most areas should stay dry. Temps this evening will fall into the 70s. We'll see quiet conditions overnight, with lows in the low 70s.

Rain chances begin to increase heading towards the weekend. Expect a blend of sun & clouds on Saturday, with highs in the low 90s. Scattered showers and storms will likely develop in the afternoon, but most will be inland.

Sunday will also fature rain chances. Again, we'll see sun & clouds with scattered showers and storms developing the afternoon. Highs will again be in the low 90s.

The typical rainy season pattern really sets in for next week. We'll see daily chance for PM showers and storms, with coverage likely greater than the weekend. Highs early next week will be in the low 90s.

There is still some uncertainty as to how the end of next week will play out, but it still looks somewhat stormy with a good chance of at least PM showers and storms.

TROPICAL UPDATE

The National Hurricane Center is still keeping an eye on a disturbance in the Gulf. This system was much stronger Friday and the NHC is giving the area a 70% chance of developing over the next 48 hours. This could become the first tropical depression of the season later tonight or Saturday.

Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...

It can leave you bruised.

10:54:40 if they stop breathing, we don't want paddles on them, we don't want their heart pumped, cause you could break ribs.

And broken.

10:54:48 -- and if an elderly person especially is very fragile, they don't want any of that.

Standup: We're talking about CPR. A life saving method so violent. It can leave you with broken bones. That's why some patients opt not to have it done at all.

They do it with a Do-Not-resuscitate order or D-N-R. It has to be signed by a doctor. And is only used.

10:46:08. when somebody does not want CPR or to be resuscitated.

Usually as part of end-of-life treatment.

10:49:45 under florida law, it has to be honored as well? Correct.

But when a resident with a D-N-R here at Jacaranda manor nursing home in st. petersburg. Stopped breathing in the dining hall.

The home disregarded his do not resuscitate order. and performed C-P-R.

12:24:08 I want to see how well the provider has informed or worked with the team to be able to ensure that this patient.this patient's wishes are being followed.

We went to Jacaranda Manor to find out. Whether there's any system in place to identify patients with a DNR.

13:47:53 Hi I'm mark Rivera i'm a reporter with 10 News. I need to talk to somebody about how you handle do not resuscitate orders.

But they threatened to call the police.

13:51:08 "you need to leave. We gotta call the police we will. But you need to leave."

Before they would give us any information.

Healthcare ethics teacher Eric Carver says a d-n-r doesn't remove the need for all care.

12:30:13 The DNR doesn't mean that you push someone in the corner and you just watch and wait until they're dead.

But that the patient's wishes must be honored.

12:30:22 It's something that you respect and you go through that end of life process.

BUT HE'S BACK IN THIS CLASSROOM -- HOPING TO SHAPE SOME ANSWERS TO SOME KEY QUESTIONS.

JUST ABOUT EVERY MEMBER OF THE CLASS OF 20-14 HAS SIMILAR WORRIES, YET THEY REMAIN OPTIMISTIC.

A SURVEY FROM CONSULTING FIRM ACCENTURE FOUND 84 PERCENT OF THIS YEAR'S GRADS EXPECT TO FIND A JOB IN THEIR CHOSEN FIELD. AMONG THEIR PREDECESSORS IN THE CLASSES OF 20-12 AND 20-13, HOWEVER, ALMOST HALF DESCRIBE THEMSELVES AS "UNDEREMPLOYED."

AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY, CAREER SERVICES DIRECTOR CHRISTINE CRUZVERGARA KEEPS TABS ON THE EVER-CHANGING LIST OF FIELDS IN DEMAND, BUT SOME THEMES STAY THE SAME.

Some of the major things that we really try to hammer home with them is, Be curious. Always be learning. Be willing to be flexible and adapt to the changing environment that you're in. That's what's going to help you be successful in your career.

VISHESHTA CHOPRA IS STILL IN GRADUATE SCHOOL, BUT ANXIOUS ABOUT THE NEXT STEPS.

We learn a lot of things from books in school, but how do you actually apply that in the real world, is a big question of mine.

SHE'S NOT ALONE. THE ACCENTURE SURVEY ALSO FOUND 80 PERCENT EXPECTED SOME SORT OF FORMAL TRAINING STARTING A JOB.

Part of that is cultural. Part of that is skills that I'll actually need to do my job in this company. And we see the direct correlation between assimilation and onboarding to productivity and performance.

WHILE SOME SKILL-BUILDING WILL COME FROM AN EMPLOYER, IT'S ALSO ON GRADS, SO HAVER WILL START A MASTER'S PROGRAM IN THE FALL, TO PREPARE HIM FOR WORKPLACE SUCCESS IN THE FIELD OF CYBERSECURITY, WHENEVER THAT FIRST JOB COMES.

"A student monitor who works inside of that facility observed the suspect reloading the shotgun and was able to stop the individual at that point. Pepper-sprayed that person then got them to the ground."

.AT THAT POINT, POLICE SAY OTHER STUDENTS JUMPED IN, SUBDUING THE SUSPECT UNTIL POLICE COULD ARRIVE.

"This is a tragedy, and the family, the victims families, it's heartbreaking, but if we are going to find any good light in this, the people around them stepped up."

ASSISTANT CHIEF PAUL McDONAGH SAYS THE STORY ISN'T ABOUT AN EVIL ACT BUT THE HEROES WHO STOOD IN THE GUNMAN'S WAY.

"Regular citizens stepped up and tried to do the right thing. In this case, I think they prevented a more horrible tragedy than it was today."

HEALTH MATTERS-ONCAM

AMONG THE SUCCESSES IN FIGHTING HEART DISEASE, IS THE USE OF STATIN DRUGS.

UP TO NOW THEY ARE MOSTLY ASSOCIATED WITH OLDER PEOPLE, BUT THAT'S CHANGING- EXPERTS BELIEVE THESE DRUGS CAN SAVE LIVES AND SO THEY HAVE OVERHAULED GUIDELINES TO MAKE THEM MORE AVAILABLE.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER BREAKS DOWN HOW STATINS WORK. Return to index of stories...

Twice as many Americans will be eligible for cholesterol-lowering drugs, based on new guidelines from leading heart groups. KNOWN TO LOWER THE RISK OF HEART ATTACK AND STROKE, JEFF STEFFEL IS NO STRANGER TO STATINS.

RUNS:

1:21 We look at the levels, I have those checked twice yearly. 1:12 I do have high cholesterol in my family.

DR. BRIAN TASCHNER/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

:44 Statins are medications that have been around for many years now- going on several decades- and they're really the main therapy to treat high cholesterol.

A NECESSARY BUILDING BLOCK FOR SOME HORMONES, TOO MUCH CHOLESTEROL INCREASES THE RISK OF HEART DISEASE. OUR LIVER MAKES ALL THE CHOLESTEROL WE NEED, BUT WE ALSO GET IT THROUGH ANIMAL-BASED FOODS LIKE MILK, EGGS AND MEAT. STATIN DRUGS HELP BY TURNING OFF THE BODY'S NATURAL PRODUCTION.

DR. BRIAN TASCHNER/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:15: They actually prevent cholesterol prevention from the liver. So they limit the body's production of cholesterol, they're also felt to have anti-inflammatory effects and maybe some blood thinning effects.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Diet is the first stop in controlling cholesterol. But several factors are prompting doctors to prescribe drugs to more people- based on previous heart events, age, existing medical conditions and statistical risk. Experts believe a wider use of statins- in the right patients- will save lives.

DR. BRIAN TASCHNER/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:38 There are many cholesterol medications that have been available over the years, but the statins are the first group of cholesterol medications that have consistently shown reductions in cardiovascular events. So they don't just reduce the numbers they actually reduce the events.

DESPITE HIS FAMILY TREE, JEFF IS CHANGING HIS PERSONAL HISTORY BY TAKING A PREVENTATIVE PRESCRIPTION.

ON THE HEELS OF THE E-P-A'S ANNOUNCEMENT THIS WEEK ABOUT REDUCING POLLUTION AT POWER PLANTS.

THEY'RE STILL ADDING TO THE GIANT IVANPAH SOLAR FACILITY IN THE MOJAVE DESERT OF CALIFORNIA.

.ALTHOUGH, IT'S ALREADY THE WORLD'S LARGEST. AND ALREADY KEEPING 400-THOUSAND TONS OF CARBON POLLUTION OUT OF THE ATMOSPHERE.

"So to put that in perspective for you: That's like taking 72,000 cars off of the road"

BUT COMING THE WEEK THE E-P-A ANNOUNCED A CRACKDOWN ON POLLUTION FROM COAL-FIRED POWER PLANTS.

A STUDY BY DELOITTE FINDS IT'S NOT JUST THE GOVERNMENT DEMANDING OTHER ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES LIKE SOLAR.

"What's really changed in the alternative energy sector is consumers' support for alternative energy"

MARLENE MOTYKA AT DELOITTE'S CENTER FOR ENERGY SOLUTIONS.

.SAYS THE STUDY SHOWS SUPPORT FOR SOLAR. AND WIND ENERGY GREW OUT OF THE GREAT RECESSION.

.WHEN CONSUMERS WERE ALSO LOOKING FOR CHEAPER WAYS TO GENERATE POWER. WHICH LED TO CONCEPTS LIKE DISTRIBUTED SOLAR.

"Distributed solar is single source, small project. so it's rooftop solar on a household or on a business"

SHE SAYS THOSE SMALL ROOFTOP PROJECTS, THOUGH, PROVE THERE'S MORE PEOPLE-POWER IN THE ENERGY INDUSTRY THAN EVER BEFORE.

"Consumers see solar as being financially and environmentally a good option in terms of their energy supply"

THE STUDY ALSO SHOWS MORE CONSUMERS ARE GOING GREEN. AND WANT EVERYBODY THEY DO BUSINESS WITH TO BE JUST AS GREEN.
