SHOCKING DETAILS TONIGHT REGARDING DISTURBING ALLEGATIONS THAT HELPLESS PATIENTS WERE DELIBERATELY NOT DELIVERED THE CARE THEY NEED - AND PAY FOR - TO STAY ALIVE.

"These patients at Life Care Center… they're residents there and they rely on the help from staff."

PUNTA GORDA DETECTIVES SAY SEVERAL PATIENTS WERE *NOT* RECEIVING THAT HELP.

ONLY NBC-2 HAS LEARNED A WELL-RESPECTED NURSE AT LIFE CARE CENTER IN PUNTA GORDA IS BEHIND BARS, ACCUSED OF A CRIME THAT VERY WELL COULD PROHIBIT HIM FROM EVER WORKING AS A NURSE AGAIN.

… AND IT ALL STARTED MAY 22ND WHEN POLICE PULLED HIM OVER IN DOWNTOWN PUNTA GORDA FOR A BROKEN BRAKE LIGHT.

SU Police say Van Vranken reached into his center console to grab his registration when they noticed prescription meds… and after searching his car, they found a lot more than that."

LIFE-SAVING MEDICATION AND INHALERS TRACED BACK TO NUMEROUS HOSPICE PATIENTS AT THIS FACILITY.

"My main concern was if this has been going on a while, how many patients have not been cared for."

WE WENT BY HIS HOME TODAY AND SPOKE WITH HIS WIFE OFF CAMERA WHO TELLS US WE DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.

AFTER DOING SOME DIGGING, NBC-2 DISCOVERED HIS WIFE, MICHELLE, WAS ARRESTED IN 2012 FOR POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION… SHE ALSO WORKED AS A NURSE, BUT IS NO LONGER EMPLOYED.

HER HUSBAND, JAMES, HAD A CLEAN RECORD BEFORE THIS INCIDENT AT LIFE CARE CENTER.

"We complete a background check of each associate who is hired to make sure our residents receive the best care possible."

VAN VRANKEN IS BEING HELD AT THE CHARLOTTE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE FACES GRAND THEFT OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION.

WE'RE TOLD LIFE CARE CENTER IS LOOKING INTO TIGHTENING THEIR PRESCRIPTION DISTRIBUTION PROCEDURES.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

INCREASING RAIN CHANCES FOR THE WEEKEND

It was a warm and humid Friday across the region, with temps pushing into the low 90s. A few isolated showers may pop up inland this evening, but most areas should stay dry. Temps this evening will fall into the 70s. We'll see quiet conditions overnight, with lows in the low 70s.

Rain chances begin to increase heading towards the weekend. Expect a blend of sun & clouds on Saturday, with highs in the low 90s. Scattered showers and storms will likely develop in the afternoon, but most will be inland.

Sunday will also fature rain chances. Again, we'll see sun & clouds with scattered showers and storms developing the afternoon. Highs will again be in the low 90s.

The typical rainy season pattern really sets in for next week. We'll see daily chance for PM showers and storms, with coverage likely greater than the weekend. Highs early next week will be in the low 90s.

There is still some uncertainty as to how the end of next week will play out, but it still looks somewhat stormy with a good chance of at least PM showers and storms.

TROPICAL UPDATE

The National Hurricane Center is still keeping an eye on a disturbance in the Gulf. This system was much stronger Friday and the NHC is giving the area a 70% chance of developing over the next 48 hours. This could become the first tropical depression of the season later tonight or Saturday.

Elsewhere, no major activity is expected over the next 5 days. Return to index of stories...
