FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

Rain chances this evening

Showers and thunderstorms have been developing across areas east of Interstate 75 on Monday afternoon. Through this evening, the potential for a few showers or isolated thunderstorms to drift back toward the coastal communities of Southwest Florida will exist. However the overall coverage of rain along the US 41 corridor is expected to remain isolated.

Once again on Tuesday the chance for sea breeze induced showers and thunderstorms will exist, but again the risk will be greatest for areas east of the interstate. Temperatures look to top out in the low 90s, near 92 degrees at Fort Myers by mid-afternoon on Tuesday.

The overall pattern for the rest of the week will feature rain chances, but again the areas experiencing the most widespread coverage should remain for the inland regions of Collier, Lee and Charlotte Counties. That risk then would be more widespread across locations in Hendry, Glades and DeSoto Counties.

Afternoon temperatures this week look to rise into the low 90s most afternoon with lows in the low to mid 70s early of the next several nights.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

HE'S THE PRESIDENT OF CROSS CREEK COUNTRY CLUB IN FORT MYERS.

IT'S A PEACEFUL COMMUNITY - EXCEPT THE FEW TIMES WILD HOGS COME FROM SIX MILE CYPRESS SLOUGH TO CHECK THINGS OUT.

Frank Maranto, Cross Creek

17:38:31 I don't know what started it but all of a sudden we started getting invaded by these feral hogs and wild pigs from the slough.:38

AND THIS WAS THE RESULT, THE PIGS LEFT BEHIND TORN UP YARDS AND SHREDDED LANDSCHAPING.

Nats- Reinforced steel

THE COMMUNITY TOOK THE PROBLEMS SERIOUSLY, REINFORCING FENCES AND HIRING TRAPPERS TO GET RID OF THE PROBLEM.

NOW LEE COUNTY IS COMING UP WITH ITS OWN APPROACH TO A GROWING NUMBER OF HOGS.

Cathy Olson, Lee Co. Conservation Lands Manager

17:54:18 no way to estimate but it's a huge number.:21

COUNTY LEADERS ARE ASKING FROM PROPOSALS FROM HUNTERS TO TAKE GUNS ON COUNTY-OWNED LAND AND SHOOT THE FERAL PIGS.

THEY WANT TO REDUCE THE HOG POPULATION AND THE DAMAGE THEY DO.

Cathy Olson, Lee Co. Conservation Lands Manager

17:52:27 they eat ground nesting birds, they disrupt the soil which allows non native invasive plants species to root and they're a really destructive animal.:37

THE HUNTERS WILL FOCUS ON RURAL LAND IN EASTERN LEE COUNTY - NOT SIX MILE CYPRESS SLOUGH NEAR WHERE MARANTO LIVES - BUT HE'S STILL HOPEFUL IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Frank Maranto, Cross Creek

17:43:08 every little bit has got to help and anyway you can get them out of here is a benefit.:15
