FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

The radar is lighting up again this Tuesday afternoon, but the threat for severe weather will remain low for the balance of the day. The bigger, stronger storms will mostly affect our inland areas, especially across Glades and Hendry County.

A few isolated pockets of rain my try to work closer to the coast this evening, but the bulk of the rain will stay away from the beaches.

Like yesterday, we'll likely see an earlier end to the rain since the rain started forming earlier in the day. We'll be left with a mostly to partly cloudy sky through the overnight period with temperatures settling into the mid 70s.

The weather pattern changes a little over the next couple days as our wind flow comes in from the Gulf of Mexico. This onshore flow will open the door for some isolated morning rain along the coast, but the highest rain chances will quickly shift inland through the afternoon and evening time frame.

Temperature may be a touch lower over the next couple afternoons thanks to the winds off the Gulf, but it'll still be plenty warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s, and some of our inland sites could still max out in the low 90s.

Thursday will be the day we see the greatest coverage of scattered showers and storms as a disturbance swings in from the Gulf, providing the atmosphere with a little more energy to work with.

Expect Thursday to be a little cloudier, too, which will help keep our afternoon temperatures below 90 degrees.

From Friday into the upcoming weekend, we'll get back to seeing more sun and heat along with our daily dose of mainly afternoon showers and storms. Temperatures will top out in the low to mid 90s and cool off into the mid 70s overnight.

In the tropics, there are no areas of concern across the Atlantic Basin, and no tropical development is expected through the next five days. Return to index of stories...

STOCKS CONTINUE CHARGING HIGHER WITH THE DOW NOW 50 POINTS AWAY FROM A MILESTONE 17,000 POINTS AND THE S&P 500 CLOSING IN ON THE 2,000 POINT LEVEL.

AS MARKETS CONTINUE MOVING HIGHER, THE CHANCES THE MARKETS COULD PULLBACK ALSO INCREASES.

NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE TODAY TO EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAN GRADUALLY REDUCE THE VOLATILITY IN YOUR PORTFOLIO AS WE GET CLOSER TO A MARKET TOP.

NICK? Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-PLASMA CG (5)

· This is an important topic, particularly if you are getting ready to retire or recently retired in the last couple of years. With markets at all-time highs, it's likely that your investment accounts are also at all-time highs. This means you now have more to lose than you ever did in the past. And few investors really grasp the concept of portfolio volatility and how it can eat away at your returns.

· The relationship between losses and recovering from those losses is not linear. It much more difficult to recover from larger losses than it is smaller losses.

The easiest way I can explain it is if you grow your investments by 50% this year and next year you lose 50%, you haven't broken even. You've actually lost 25% of the value of your investments over that two year timeframe. It also means that your portfolio has to grow by 100% to breakeven again. So it's important not only to review the downside risk of your portfolio but also to begin thinking about reigning in some of that risk. Here are several strategies to consider to help you reduce the volatility of your portfolio as we get closer and closer to a market top

· So first, the easiest and most effective way to reduce the risk of your investments is by changing the asset allocation of the portfolio…that is the percentage of equities, fixed income, and cash that make up your portfolio. Generally speaking, the more equity in your portfolio, the higher your downside risk is. Therefore, as we get closer to a market top, consider reducing your equity exposure and increasing your fixed income holdings to reduce your downside risk. Additionally, you may want to consider adding to your cash reserves for investment opportunities in the event of a pullback.

· Second, consider incorporating low-correlating assets in your portfolio that will react differently at different stages of the stock market cycle. That is, you want to make sure that not all of your investments will move in the same direction when markets rise and fall. Assets whose values move in different directions or move at different rates of return will reduce the overall volatility of your portfolio.

· And third, review the volatility of your individual securities or the BETA of your stock positions. Basically BETA measures the volatility of a stock compared to the overall market. If a stock has a beta of 1 that means it will rise and fall at the same percentage of the market. A stock with a Beta of.75 will move 75% of the market and a stock with a BETA of 1.5 will move at 1.5 times the market. As market move higher, consider trimming back your stock positions with higher beta's which are usually growth stocks, with value or defensive stocks that typically have lower beta's. Lower beta stocks will fall less than the market when a pullback or correction occurs.

· Managing the volatility of your investments starts with a well-articulated investment policy statement that defines your investment objective, time horizon, and risk tolerance and outlines an investment plan and asset allocation that is appropriate for your investment profile. The bottom line is that risk, volatility, and uncertainty are going to be a part of the investment landscape. Make sure you have a plan in place and are working with an advisor that can help you navigate market risk and volatility. Return to index of stories...

PEOPLE WHO DO IT--- SWEAR BY IT.

"I sleep better at night. It's helped whiten my teeth."

FRESHER BREATH. CLEARER SKIN.

"Every day." "Yup."

CANDACE EBBINGHAUS. IS TALKING ABOUT OIL PULLING. SOMETHING SHE'S BEEN DOING WITH COCONUT OIL FOR 15 MINUTES A DAY. FOR A MONTH.

"I've had some good benefits from it."

"It's pretty simple. You take your oil. You scoop out a tablespoon, and start swishing."

THERE IS A LITERAL HARD PART. UNLESS YOU MELT THE COCONUT OIL AHEAD OF TIME, IT'S A SOLID AT ROOM TEMPERATURE.

"It's kind of gross but you just chew it and then it melts."

THEN YOU SWISH IT AROUND FOR 15 TO 20 MINUTES. AND SPIT IT OUT.

"It's supposed to pull the toxins out of your body."

COULD THE ANSWER TO BETTER DENTAL HEALTH REALLY LIE IN AISLE FOUR OF THE SUPERMARKET?

"I've been getting a lot of questions about this."

OIL PULLING IS A RELATIVELY NEW HOT TOPIC, BUT IT DATES BACK TO ANCIENT INDIAN CULTURE.

THE THEORY BEING--- THE OIL -- COCONUT, SUNFLOWER, SESAME--- AS YOU SWISH IT AROUND ---- GETS BACTERIA TO CLING TO IT.

WHEN YOU SPIT OUT THE OIL, YOU GET RID OF THE TOXINS AND WHITEN YOUR TEETH. WE ASKED DENTIST CHRISTINE TENAGLIA.

"There's no proof that says that it's gonna work. It's just by testimonial."

"Some people say, oh it works great. Well, I don't know. But the jury's still out and I would say give it a try. The oil pulling is certainly not going to hurt you."

FOR EBBINGHAUS, THE PROOF IS IN THE PULLING.

"The weekend that I started it, I did it on a Saturday morning and I did it on a Sunday - the next day - and I forgot to do it Monday. I just Tuesday, I was like, gosh, I didn't sleep as well last night. It was just really weird. So I did it again and I slept better." Return to index of stories...

HERE'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: DO YOU 'TELL ALL' WHEN YOU MEET WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER?

TOO OFTEN PATIENTS ARE EMBARRASSED TO MENTION CERTAIN SYMPTOMS OR JUST PLAIN FORGET.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS--

AMY OSHIER REMINDS YOU WHAT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR. Return to index of stories...

BEING A PARTNER IN HEALTHCARE MEANS HELPING YOUR DOCTOR HELP YOU. IT BEGINS WITH SPEAKING UP-SOUNDS SIMPLE? BUT MANY PEOPLE SKIP IMPORTANT DETAILS.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

6:06 A person doesn't think that they're very significant, but it can lead to something else.

SO HERE'S SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT- THINGS YOU SHOULD BE TELLING YOUR DOCTOR.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

1:00 Any unintentional or unplanned weight loss or weight gain because that could be a sign of something else going on. Skin lesions, anything new or old, non-healing wounds, pain, chest pain, or any prolonged joint swelling or pain or inflammation, vision changes or changes in a headache pattern.

CERTAINLY TOPICS YOU'D WANT TO SHARE. OTHERS MAY SLIP YOUR MIND.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

:28 Bring a list of your medications. Current medications which is not just prescription, but also over-the-counter. Often times people forget that over-the-counter medications certainly can interact and have a chemical, cause a chemical reaction. 2:12 Another problem that you might not even think is important. Any changes in vision.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Many people fall victim to what's called 'white coat anxiety'. They have a lot of things to tell their healthcare provider- but when they see that white coat, they forget everything. Best advice is to keep a running list and jot down any changes or symptoms as they happen.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

7:48 So that you can participate in the routine screenings and anything else that would help detect something early on.

ONE MORE THING: BEFORE YOU TAKE OFF ON A TRIP-PENCIL IN A VISIT WITH YOUR PROVIDER.

ARLENE WRIGHT/NURSE PRACTITIONER

RUNS:

1:36 If you're planning to travel, outside of the country where certain diseases might be prevalent, you might need immunizations.

SO AS YOU HOP UP ON THE EXAM TABLE- BE PREPARED TO SHARE IT ALL. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

TWINS DON'T SHARE A BIRTHDAY-TRX-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

THEY ARE TWINS- BUT THEY DON'T SHARE A BIRTHDAY-- IN FACT ALEXANDRE IS MORE THAN 3 WEEKS OLDER THAN HIS BROTHER RONALDO-- BUT BOTH BOYS ARE THRIVING- - AFTER A RARE AND RISKY DELAYED DELIVERY THAT HAS EXCEEDED EVERY EXPECTATION.

"This was unique in many ways-- including that both twins are doing well."

THE CHALLENGE BEGAN-- WHEN MOM LINDA DASILVA WENT INTO LABOR ONLY 24 WEEKS INTO HER PREGNANCY. DOCTORS AT TUFTS TRIED TO STOP THE CONTRACTIONS. BUT 4 DAYS LATER-- A VERY PREMATURE AL-EH-SHAWN-DRE WAS BORN.

"We were praying to hear his cry. And we did. And it was a relief. Because knew there was 50 percent chance of not surviving."

DOCTORS HERE PLACED BABY NUMBER ONE IN INTENSIVE CARE-- AND TOLD MOM AND DAD-- IT WAS TIME TO CONSIDER KEEPING BABY NUMBER TWO IN MOM'S WOMB-- A LITTLE LONGER.

I thought it was absurd! I said I don't think-- I didn't know this was possible."

BUT DOCTORS EXPLAINED-- A "DELAYED TWIN DELIVERY" COULD BE DONE -- AND LINDA WAS A PERFECT CANDIDATE.

"He's like leave him there- he is fine-- his heart is beating well-- so okay- then we start praying."

A HEALTHY RONANLDO WOULD BE BORN 24 DAYS LATER-- WEIGHING IN A FULL POUND MORE THAN HIS BIG BROTHER.

"Alexandre we try to tell moms be grateful for everyday you're still pregnant and we can get you as far along as we possibly can and this is just a perfect example." Return to index of stories...
