THE SECOND-HIGHEST RANKING MEMBER OF THE U-S HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND A MAN MANY SAW AS A POTENTIAL SPEAKER, HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER ERIC CANTOR HAS LOST HIS SEAT IN CONGRESS.

"Obviously, we came up short."

IT WAS A RACE MANY PUNDITS THOUGHT CANTOR COULDN'T LOSE, BUT HE DID.

IN A LOW-TURNOUT REPUBLICAN PRIMARY, TEA PARTY-FAVORITE DAVE BRAT BEAT CANTOR BY MORE THAN TEN POINTS.

"This is a miracle from God that just happened."

BRAT WON THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION DESPITE BEING OUTSPENT NEARLY TEN-TO-ONE.

"There is just one reason, and that's because dollars do not vote; you do."

A RELATIVE UNKNOWN, BRAT SAYS CANTOR'S CAMPAIGN ADS ACTUALLY HELPED RAISE HIS NAME RECOGNITION. BRAT ARGUED CANTOR HAD LOST TOUCH WITH HIS CONSTITUENTS, FOCUSING MORE ON G-O-P DONORS IN NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA.

EXECUTIVE POLITICAL EDITOR MARK PRESTON SAYS BRAT IS NOW THE SHOE-IN FOR THE CONGRESSIONAL SEAT.

"He is going to win in November. Democrats were hoping that Eric Cantor would run as a write-in candidate, would split the vote, then they could potentially pick up the seat. That's not going to happen. This is a very Republican seat."

BRAT'S NOMINATION PITS HIM AGAINST A COLLEAGUE: FELLOW RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE PROFESSOR JACK TRAMMELL, WHO ACCEPTED THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION EARLIER THIS YEAR.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

!!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SCATTERED DOWNPOURS START AROUND MIDDAY

Scattered storms are in the forecast today. We start the morning mainly clear and dry, but it won't take long to get the rain going today. Winds from the south will quickly turn southwesterly. That turn of the winds will happen early in the day, allowing a few downpours to pop up starting in the later morning to midday time frame. A few of these will be near our urban corridor, but once they pop up, they are headed toward the inland areas. Most of the activity will remain inland, but there will be a few downpours that come back toward the coastline in the evening as the sea breeze collapses. With plenty of moisture in place, there is the possibility of isolated rain totals reaching 2-3"; similar to what happened yesterday in eastern Lee County. Afternoon highs will again reach into the lower 90s.

We'll continue with scattered afternoon storms in the forecast through the week, most of which will be in the inland areas. Afternoon highs will stay in the near 90 degrees and lows will be in the low to mid 70s.

There are no areas of concern in the tropics at this time. Return to index of stories...

DRIVELESS CARS-ON CAM

YOU'VE SEEN THEM IN THE MOVIES. AND ON CLASSIC T.V. SHOWS LIKE "KNIGHT RIDER."

BUT DID YOU EVER IMAGINE, YOU COULD HAVE YOUR OWN. DRIVER-LESS CAR?

AS NBC'S CRAIG MELVIN REPORTS, THIS IS BECOMING A REALITY. Return to index of stories...

DRIVELESS CARS-PKG

NO STEERING WHEEL. NO GAS OR BRAKE PEDALS.

NO MORE DRIVING.

"it is going to be incredibly empowering and incredibly powerful."

GOOGLE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT'S BUILDING 100 OF THESE FRIENDLY-LOOKING SELF-DRIVING CARS TO TEST THIS SUMMER.

THEIR GOAL?

CORNERING THE MARKET ON DRIVERLESS CARS OF THE FUTURE.

JUST A FEW MILES AWAY IN SILICON VALLEY.

ONE OF THE WORLD'S OLDEST CAR MAKERS IS RACING TO BEAT THE TECH GIANT TO IT.AND THEY MAY HAVE A HEAD START.

now the car is engage here./ and it basically drives by itself. it brakes by itself. it steers by itself.

MERCEDES' NEW INTELLIGENT DRIVE IS ON THE ROAD NOW AND IT CAN DRIVE ITSELF.FOR UP TO 12 SECONDS.

let's say 65 miles an hour. We are following the car in front of us. /

CRAIG:

You're not driving it right now.

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

--and do you see that it's actually steering?

IT LASTS A BIT LONGER, DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC.KEEPING YOU IN YOUR LANE.

CRAIG:

So if you're stuck in rush hour traffic?

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

It actually is a big relief and a big enhancement and-- in terms of safety and in terms of convenience.

CRAIG:

How so?

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

humans make mistakes./When you see a certain situation, /until you actually take action-- basically about one second, you know, goes by.

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

Yeah. Computers /react within-- , milliseconds.

I TOOK the car ON THE ROAD MYSELF.

CRAIG:

"Look Mom.no hands!!!"

THOUGH ACCIDENT-FREE DRIVING MAY BE THE GOAL, SOME CRITICS WORRY ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY FAILING.

ANDREW DEL COLLE:

We've seen our electronics go down on us. /even if these cars are better than human drivers, we all have to acknowledge that the possibility of failure is very real.

WHAT NEXT? A DASHBOARD OF THE FUTURE, PROJECTED WITHIN YOUR WINDSHIELD.THAT'S INTERACTIVE USING GESTURE TECHNOLOGY.WHILE THE CAR DRIVES ITSELF.

CRAIG:

Oh, I can change my music here?

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

Yeah. Exactly. You can change your music.

CRAIG:

Wow!

CRAIG:

The-- to those who would say you are creating a host of distractions /. What would be your response to that?

JOHANN JUNGWIRTH:

we want, the car to really become so intelligent, to have a brain in itself basically and do all of this hard work for you.

THAT HARD WORK MAY PAY OFF IN OTHER WAYS. THOUGH IT'S STILL a work in progress, GOOGLE SAYS IF THEIR SELF DRIVING CAR GETS INTO AN ACCIDENT, WRITE THEM THE TICKET. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

PROTECTIVE SLEEVES FOR SCHOOL SHOOTING-ON CAM

SCHOOL SHOOTINGS -- LIKE THE ONE IN OREGON TUESDAY -- HAVE LED A FEW IOWA TEACHERS TO TAKE ACTION.

THEY HAVE INVENTED A DEVICE THEY SAY WILL SECURE THEIR CLASSROOMS AND HELP KEEP STUDENTS SAFE.

CAROLINE REINWALD REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

PROTECTIVE SLEEVES FOR SCHOOL SHOOTING-PKG

"That their parents have entrusted me with their safety."

IT'S SOMETHING THAT NO TEACHER WANTS TO THINK ABOUT.

"I'm going into a place that's become a target."

WHAT TO DO IF THERE'S A SHOOTER IN THE BUILDING.

"I have a wife who's a kindergarten teacher and I'm going, how can I protect my wife in a situation like that."

RECENT SHOOTINGS LIKE THE ONE IN OREGON ON TUESDAY HAVE RAISED AWARENESS.

BUT A FEW TEACHERS IN MUSCATINE WERE TIRED OF WAITING FOR A BETTER SOLUTION TO KEEP THEIR CLASSROOMS SAFE.

"When violence occurs in a school, teachers have seconds to make a potentially life saving decision."

IN HIS TRAINING, MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER -- DANIEL NITZEL -- WAS TAUGHT TO TIE A BELT AROUND THE DOOR'S CLOSER ARM.SOMETHING HE AND HIS COLLEAGUES QUICKLY REALIZED.WAS NOT A GREAT OPTION.

"All 5 rooms that the teachers were trained in, the doors were breached, the cords were ripped, and the police officer who was portraying the active shooter came in and killed all of us."

THAT'S WHEN HE WENT HOME AND DESIGNED "THE SLEEVE" -- A 12 GAUGE CARBON STEEL *CASE THAT GOES OVER THE DOOR'S CLOSER ARM, SECURING IT FROM THE INSIDE.

Reporter Standup: Once the sleeve is on the door, it takes an incredible amount of force for the door to be opened. Making it nearly impossible for the shooter to get inside the room.

"I think it's a great product."

"These shooters, what they're doing in.they're going to be pulling on the door. If they can't get in, they're going to move on."

NITZEL STRESSES THAT IT'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR A DOOR LOCK -- AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED IN AN EMERGENCY.

"We look at it as a cheap insurance policy. If you have someone out in the hallway, and you do not want to go out into the hallway and lock your door, we want to provide you with a way to disarm that door."

A SIMPLE AND YET EFFECTIVE WAY -- THAT COULD MEAN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH. Return to index of stories...

GIVEN THE BALLOONING RATE OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY, IT'S NO WONDER KIDS ARE GETTING SICK BEFORE THEIR TIME.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:17 It's so unfortunate but yes, we are seeing that children are getting conditions that were formally thought of as being adult conditions. Such as Type 2 diabetes, we're also seeing high blood pressure. We see heart disease, we see fatty liver disease. We see gallbladder disease.

NOT TO MENTION SLEEP APNEA, WORSENING ASTHMA, GASTRIC PROBLEMS AND JOINT DETERIORATION. EXPERTS BELIEVE IT'S TIME FOR ACTION.

DR. NANCY WITHAM/PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

6:15 Looking at the food choices, looking at the activity, screen time, bedtime, all of those things.

THE BIGGEST GAME-CHANGER: EXERCISE. ONE HOUR A DAY IS RECOMMENDED.

There are no style points for activity- it doesn't need to be anything formal. The simple act of moving is enough to keep kids on a healthy path.

ERIKA HOWELL/MOTHER
