S/ Richard Engel/ NBC News/ Landstuhl, Germany 1:13-1:33

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE FLED MOSUL AFTER ISLAMIST FIGHTERS TOOK CONTROL OF THE IRAQI CITY ON TUESDAY.

NBC'S RICHARD ENGEL HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE STORY FROM LANDSTUHL, GERMANY.

HE FILED THIS REPORT.

This is profoundly significant.

Islamic extremists from a group that is even more radical than al Qaeda have taken over the Iraqi city of Mosul.

This is not some small Iraqi town.

It's the second largest city in Iraq, the industrial capital of the north.

The extremists took over and the Iraqi security forces, U-S trained and U-S equipped, didn't stay and fight.

There was some fighting but they abandoned the city in the end.

The militants now have a big base in northern Iraq.

"The situation is certainly very grave on the ground. We are working with Iraqi leaders from across the country to support a coordinated response."

This all goes back to Syria.

Syria has been ignored for the last several years, it has been allowed to fester like a wound in the Middle East.

And extremists in Syria crossed the border, they joined up with other radicals in Iraq and together they have created this united front able to cross that border at will.

This united front is called the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

That is the group that has taken over Mosul and is taking over other parts of the country right now.

This has implications for Iraq, for the region, but also for the United States.

REPORTER CLOSE:

IT SHOWS HOW STRONG THIS AL QAEDA AFFILIATE HAS BECOME AND THIS IS A TRANSNATIONAL MOVEMENT, IT IS NOT JUST LIMITED TO CARRYING OUT ATTACKS IN THE REGION.

MANY OF ITS MEMBERS ALSO WANT TO CARRY OUT ATTACKS AGAINST EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES.

RICHARD ENGEL, NBC NEWS. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

Most of today's storms have moved well inland toward Southeast Florida, leaving Southwest Florida under a partly cloudy sky and temperatures in the upper 80s.

As we head into the evening and overnight period, we'll leave the door open for a couple of isolated downpours. Otherwise, expect a partly to mostly cloudy sky with lows settling into the mid 70s.

The winds continue coming in from the Gulf through the overnight into our Thursday morning, a setup that typically brings in some isolated downpours from the Gulf during the morning and midday time frame.

To make our forecast even more interesting, an upper-air disturbance dropping in from the Gulf will enhance the potential for showers and thunderstorms by the late morning and early afternoon, particularly closer to the coast and urban corridor.

A few of these storms could be strong, producing torrential rain, intense lightning and gusty winds.

As we progress through the afternoon, the storms will migrate deeper inland toward the Florida east coast. However, it's still possible to get some isolated thunderstorms closer to coast during the late afternoon and evening.

Friday we begin to transition back into more of a "typical" rainy season pattern, but with an onshore flow still in place, a few showers could still develop by the mid to late morning. The afternoon storms will tend to build deeper inland.

The weekend will be quite characteristic for mid June with a mix of sun and clouds along with our daily dose of scattered storms during the mid to late afternoon. Highs will reach the low to mid 90s, and overnight temperatures will cool into the mid 70s. Return to index of stories...

Could this 100 milliliter bottle of clear liquid hold the secret to the future of sunscreen.

Not to be applied liberally, but. Gulped down?

"I just do not personally feel that it would work."

Doctor Jay sha-REE Gamoth the chief medical director of A to Z Dermatology is pretty steadfast in her opinion about the magic water.

"So what they would say that you need to take 2 drops of water an hour before you go out and then re-take those drops every 90 minutes to every 3 hours when you're out in the sun."

The problem?

Well first off. It's not FDA approved. Or scientifically tested in any way.

Secondly there's SO MUCH fine print.

Like.don't eat a meal before taking it. And. Don't exercise or it may not work right.

This drinkable sunscreen is created by a company called "harmonized water. they sell different versions of their water to treat for all sorts of ailments.

Hormone imbalance?Joint health. Low testosterone.

And of course this product which claims to be UV protectant.

"Science has not proven for it to work. There is not a scientific method. So until FDA approves it until we have scientific data it's hard for me to say yes they cracked the code at this time with the info we have.probably not."

And just to be sure it's not the real deal. I'll play guinea pig.

SECONDARY DROWNING CONCERNS-VO

AND WHILE THE RISK OF DROWNING IN THE WATER IS A KNOWN HAZARD--

THERE IS ANOTHER RISK CALLED "SECONDARY DROWNING" THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT.

A SWIMMER IN THE POOL MIGHT ACCIDENTALLY INHALE WATER OR HAVE A CLOSE-TO-DROWNING INCIDENT.

BUT THEN THEY BRUSH IT OFF AND APPEAR TO BE FINE IMMEDIATELY AFTER.

THE WATER LEFT IN A SWIMMER'S LUNGS COULD CAUSE SWELLING.

THE LUNGS THEN HAVE A HARDER TIME EXCHANGING OXYGEN AND IT CAUSES THE HEART TO SLOW.

IT COULD APPEAR UP TO 24 HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL INCIDENT.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT AS WE HEAD TO THE POOLS AND BEACHES TO COOL OFF THIS SUMMER. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

QUARTER HOUR-ONCAM

IF YOU'RE A STEAK LOVER - YOU PROBABLY KNOW THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF DEBATE ON THE EFFECTS OF MEAT ON OUR HEALTH.

NOW A NEW STUDY FINDS THAT EATING A LOT OF RED MEAT EARLY IN LIFE CAN POSSIBLY RAISE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER IN WOMEN.

HERE'S HOLLY FIRFER WITH TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE. Return to index of stories...

QUARTER HOUR-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

ALTHOUGH MOST STUDIES HAVE SUGGESTED THAT THERE IS LITTLE OR NO ASSOCIATION BETWEEN BREAST CANCER AND RED MEAT, MUCH OF THE RESEARCH HAS BEEN DONE ON OLDER WOMEN. NOW NEW DATA, FOUND IN THE LATEST EDITION OF THE BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL, INDICATES THAT EATING A LOT OF RED MEAT IN A WOMAN'S YOUNGER YEARS, COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER IN EARLIER IN LIFE.

A GROUP OF HARVARD RESEARCHERS LOOKED AT DATA ON OVER 88-THOUSANDPREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN WHO TOOK PART IN THE FAMOUS NURSES' HEALTH STUDY II. ALL PARTICIPANTS HAD COMPLETED A QUESTIONNAIRE ON DIETIN 1991, WHEN THE WOMEN WERE 36 TO 45.

INVESTIGATORS FOUND THOSE WOMEN WHO ATE A LOT OF RED MEAT HAD A 22% INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER, WHILE THOSE WOMEN WHO AT MORE POULTRY, FISH, LEGUMES AND NUTS, ALONG WITH LESS RED MEAT HAD A 17% LOWER RISK OF BREAST CANCER OVERALL

THE STUDY AUTHORS BELIEVE THAT REPLACING RED MEAT WITH A COMBINATION OF OTHER, LESS FATTY PROTEINS MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER. AND ALTHOUGH THIS STUDY IS A GOOD BEGINNING, FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIET AT AN EARLY AGE AND IT'S RISK ON BREAST CANCER LATER IN LIFE.

FOR TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE, I'M HOLLY FIRFER. Return to index of stories...
