FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

INLAND RAIN THIS AFTERNOON

After a few showers and thunderstorms moved onshore from the Gulf of Mexico this morning, the best chance for rain and thunder developing this afternoon will be in areas mainly east of the I-75 corridor.

Temperatures this afternoon are expected to reach into the low 90s. With a southwesterly wind flow, we'll once again have a fair amount of humidity in the air making it feel rather sticky outside.

Later on tonight, we'll be keeping watch of any storms that are able to develop over the Gulf of Mexico. Given the weather pattern we are in, once again tonight we'll need to account for the chance for a few late evening showers or storms near the coastal communities of Southwest Florida.

Low temperatures tonight will return to the low to mid 70s.

This weekend looks to be a transition period with rain chances becoming greatest in the late afternoon and evening hours, and especially for spots along and east of I-75 compliments of the sea breeze interaction working in from the Gulf of Mexico. Return to index of stories...

BERGDAHL RETURNS-trxVOTOPS, OC

TWO WEEKS AFTER ARMY SGT. BOWE BERGDAHL GAINED HIS FREEDOM IN A TALIBAN PRISONER EXCHANGE, HE'S BACK IN AMERICA.

BERGDAHL ARRIVED IN SAN ANTONIO TEXAS EARLY THIS MORNING.

BUT HIS ARRIVAL IS OVERSHADOWED BY CONTINUING CONTROVERSY.

STEVE KASTENBAUM HAS THE DETAILS ON THIS SOLDIER'S RETURN.

THE PRISONER SWAP THAT GOT BERGDAHL HIS FREEDOM IGNITED A FIRESTORM OF CRITICISM.

Two weeks after he gained his freedom in a Taliban prisoner exchange, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is back on American soil.

Bergdahl has been transferred from a military treatment facility in Germany to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

An Army spokesman says Bergdahl "will continue the next phase of his reintegration process" at the Texas Army post. There's no timeline for the process.

The Idaho native is expected to be reunited with his family in San Antonio. He was captured in Afghanistan in June 2009 and released by the Taliban on May 31 in a deal struck by the Obama administration in which five senior Taliban officials were released from detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Officials also say the Army has not yet formally begun a new review into the circumstances of Bergdahl's capture and whether he walked away without leave or was deserting the Army when he was found and taken by insurgents. Return to index of stories...

BERGDAHL RETURNS-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

ARMY SERGEANT BOWE BERGDAHL RETURNS TO A POLITICAL CONTROVERSY AFTER NEARLY FIVE YEARS IN CAPTIVITY

THE 28-YEAR-OLD TOUCHED DOWN IN TEXAS EARLY FRIDAY and WAS TAKEN TO THE SAN ANTONIO MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER.

BERGDAHL WENT MISSING IN JUNE OF 2009 WHILE SERVING IN AFGHANISTAN. THE LONGEST-HELD AMERICAN SOLDIERS SINCE THE VIETNAM WAR.

A MILITARY SOURCE TELLS CNN AN INVESTIGATION DETERMINED BERGDAHL DELIBERATELY LEFT HIS BASE. BUT THE ARMY HAS NO DEFINITIVE FINDING THAT BERGDAHL DESERTED BECAUSE THEY DON'T YET KNOW HIS INTENT.

THE BACKLASH BEGAN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIVE-TO-ONE PRISONER SWAP WAS ANNOUNCED.

REPUBLICANS ACCUSED THE WHITE HOUSE OF OVERSTEPPING ITS AUTHORITY BY NOT CONSULTING CONGRESS.

"We could have done a better job, could have done a better job of keeping you informed. I know that trust has been broken."

OTHER CRITICS CALL RELEASING FIVE HARDENED taliban TERRORISTS A BAD MOVE.

"negotiating with terrorists, is a principle that we've not violated, and now we've violated, and we've put Americans at risk as a result. "

THE WHITE HOUSE CONTENDS THAT BERHDHL'S HEALTH WAS DETERIORATING AND THEY ACTED QUICKLY TO SAVE HIS LIFE. BERGDAHL NOW FACES MONTHS OF PHYSICAL REHABILITATION. HIS MENTAL REHABILITATION WILL LIKELY TAKE MUCH LONGER.

"He's gonna need some time to re-assmilate, to get control of his emotions, to get healthy again, and we're gonna give him all the time he needs to do that."

WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SPEAK HIM, OFFICIALS HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING WHY HE LEFT.

HIS RETURN TO THE U-S COMES AMID NEW INSIGHT INTO HIS DISAPPEARANCE.

THURSDAY THE DAILY BEAST PUBLISHED TWO LETTERS BERGDAHL REPORTEDLY WROTE TO HIS FAMILY FROM 2012 AND 2013.

HE WRITES ABOUT HIS LIFE IN CAPTIVITY. AND ALSO CRITICIZES U-S ARMY LEADERSHIP IN AFGHANISTAN.

IN ONE LETTER, BERGDAHL REFERS TO AN INVESTIGATION. PERHAPS THE ONE INTO HIS OWN DISAPPEARANCE.

HE WRITES:

"IF THIS LETTER MAKES IT TO THE U.S.A., TELL THOSE INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION THAT THERE ARE MORE SIDES TO THE. PLEASE TELL D-C TO WAIT FOR ALL TO COME IN."

NOW THAT HE'S HOME, THE KEY PIECE OF EVIDENCE MAY COME FROM BERGDAHL HIMSELF.

DEVELOPING THIS MORNING --

IRAQ IS FALLING APART - AGAIN - AND PRESIDENT OBAMA IS DECIDING WHETHER THE U-S SHOULD COME TO THEIR RESCUE.

IT'S MORE THAN JUST A CIVIL WAR.

THE CONCERN IS THAT OUTSIDERS TRYING TO TAKE OVER COULD BE LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR THE NEXT NINE-ELEVEN.

PRESIDENT OBAMA IS CONSIDERING U-S AIRSTRIKES.

-- U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria extremist group is a threat not just to Iraq but to the United States and the world -- and that is why President Barack Obama is urgently considering his next steps. "Every country that understands the importance of stability in the Middle East needs to be concerned about what is happening," Kerry said Friday, speaking at a summit in London. We are the chain gang, mighty mighty chain gang.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE CHAIN GANG AT THE COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, WHERE THESE INMATES WERE DOG WALKING.

IT'S JUST ONE OF THEIR MANY DUTIES ALONG WITH KENNEL CLEANUP AND TRASH COLLECTION ALONG COUNTY ROADS. THEY DO IT ALL IN CHAINS, BUT THEY VOLUNTEERED.

JOSEPH HOWELL TOLD ME IN HIS JAIL FOR TRAFFICKING AND STOLEN PROPERTY AND A VIOLATION OF PROBATION.

"Being around the dogs is fun, you know. You know, taking care of them. We walk them all the time, two days a week. And we clean the kennels one day a week."

BUT IT'S STILL A PUNISHMENT.

"People ride by and say well that's so and so. Hmm, wonder what he did."

IN THE YEAR SINCE SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY BROUGHT BACK THE STATE'S ONLY CHAIN GANG, 96 INMATES HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. 17 OF THOSE INMATES HAVE RETURNED AFTER THEY WERE RELEASED FROM JAIL.

"Last year they not only saved the citizens and the taxpayers of Brevard County about $175,000 in work that they did out on the side of the road, but they also brought crime prevention messages."

THAT RANGES FROM PASSERS BY EXPLAINING TO KIDS HOW THESE MEN ENDED UP IN CHAINS, TO INMATES PARTICIPATING IN PANEL DISCUSSIONS AND ANOTHER SHERIFF'S OFFICE PROGRAM. HOW TO BE A PARENT AGAIN.

"I can tell you, nowhere on my bucket list was being on a chain gang. I can tell you that right now and hopefully it's not on anyone else's either so we send that very strong message."

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

It's a world thing, everyone is into it, so it makes it more exciting.

THE GLOBAL SCOPE OF THE WORLD CUP MEANS THE BIG NAMES IN SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE TOOLS WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING IT EASY TO FOLLOW GAME PLAY, FROM ANYWHERE.

TWITTER USERS CAN SHOW THEIR TEAM SPIRIT WITH A HASHTAG IN FRONT OF A COUNTRY'S THREE-LETTER COUNTRY CODE, LIKE U-S-A, CREATES A HASHFLAG ICON, NO LIMIT TO HOW MANY CAN APPEAR WITHIN A TWEET.

I have a couple of teams Argentina, U-S is the second one. So if one doesn't win I'll root for the other one.

FACEBOOK HAS A PAGE TO KEEP TABS ON WHAT'S TRENDING, INCLUDING AN INTERACTIVE MAP SHOWING TOP ATHLETES AND WHO'S ROOTING THEM ON AROUND THE GLOBE.

The World Cup is fun to watch. You start to pull for teams that never thought you would pull for because you are not familiar with them.

EVER WONDER IF YOU HAVE CANCER IN YOUR GENES?

IT'S AN EMERGING ASPECT OF CANCER CARE - STUDYING AND IDENTIFYING GENETIC LINKS.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS, AMY OSHIER GIVES US THE LOW DOWN ON LYNCH SYNDROME. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

DOCTORS OFTEN REFER TO IT AS HEREDITARY NONPOLYPOSIS COLORECTAL CANCER OR HNPCC. BUT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD IT'S MORE COMMON NAME: LYNCH SYNDROME.

DR. VALERIE DYKE/COLORECTAL SURGEON:

RUNS:

:26 About 15% of colorectal cancer is genetically inheritable and a smaller sub-set of that what we call Lynch Syndrome or HNPCC.:56: And we'll see 50% of people by the time they're aged 50 start to have cancer in their polyps if they have that type of genetic variant.

THE LIFETIME RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER IS 80%. PEOPLE WITH LYNCH ALSO have an increased risk of cancers of the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, urinary tract, brain, and skin. Women with this disorder have a high risk of OVARIAN and endometrial CANCER. IT'S WHY DOCTORS ARE TAKING A PROACTIVE APPROACH.

DR. VALERIE DYKE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

4:43 We have a new program called reflex testing where every single colon tumor is going to be tested if it is removed in someone who is aged 60 or younger. 1:54 We'll test the tumor and see whether it has this genetic variant and if it does then there are blood tests they can run on other members of your family and they can also do extra testing on you to see if you would have any of the other cancers that go along with this syndrome.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

In general colorectal cancers have few early warning signs. But a red flag for Lynch Syndrome is age. The average age for colorectal cancer patients is 72 years old- compared with Lynch patients who are diagnosed on average by 45. Many cases strike much younger.

Families with one or more cancer cases diagnosed under age 50, may want genetic counseling. USUALLY NOT FOUND OUT OF RESEARCH OR ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTERS, TESTING IS AVAILABLE AT THE REGIONAL CANCER CENTER.

MARY ANN ORLANG/GENETIC COUNSELOR

RUNS:

3:36 It looks at actually genetic mismatches and specific chromosomes when they look at the blood. They look for abnormalities.

EARLY DETECTION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT BECAUSE LYNCH-LINKED COLORECTAL CANCERS ARE MORE AGGRESSIVE.

DR. VALERIE DYKE/COLORECTAL SURGEON

RUNS:

3:15: We think in average people it takes from 5-10 years to go from a polyp to a cancer. We think in people with HNPCC that they could go more rapidly, within a few years.

LEARNING THE LOW DOWN ON LYNCH MAY LEAD TO LOWERING YOUR CANCER RISK. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Dr. Valerie Dyke/Colorectal Surgeon
