GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE! THANKS FOR STARTING YOUR SATURDAY WITH NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M JIM SPIEWAK. IT'S THE WEEKEND AND WE BEGIN AT 6, WITH A CHECK OF OUR FORECAST.

METEROLOGIST JASON DUNNING STANDING BY TO LET US KNOW WHAT WE CAN EXPECT IN THE DAY AHEAD. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX WALL

It's going be a hot and humid Father's Day weekend across Southwest Florida, very characteristic weather for mid June.

After contending with some intense storms through the overnight period, we'll start off our Saturday morning with a mix of sun and clouds along with mostly dry weather.

As the heat and energy build in our atmosphere through the day, scattered storms will develop again today with the most widespread activity east of I-75 and over the interior. A few isolated downpours or a thunderstorm can't be ruled out along the coast, especially this evening through early tonight.

A few of today's storms could be strong with the primary threats being frequent lightning, torrential rain, and gusty winds.

Expect a partly sunny sky for most of the day, but some cloudy spells will be possible as the afternoon storms get going; our temperatures will top out close to 90 with the lowest readings expected along the coast.

For Father's Day, a touch of dry air will cut down on the coverage of afternoon storms, but some isolated downpours and storms will still form during the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures will once gain soar into the low to mid 90s.

As we head into the upcoming week, the steering flow will become more easterly. This, combined with ample moisture and daytime heating, will focus the main storm threat toward the west coast of Florida, so more of us will likely get in on some afternoon storms through the course of the week.

In the tropics, all is quiet, and no tropical development is expected through the next 5-7 days.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

LEE COUNTY IMPACT FEE-2SHOT

ONE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WATCHDOG GROUP SAYS LEE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE LOSING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR.

NBC 2'S BRITTANY WEINER EXPLAINS WHY COUNTY LEADERS SAYS IT'S NOT A LOSS - BUT A SAVINGS FOR TAXPAYERS. Return to index of stories...

LEE COUNTY IMPACT FEE-TRX-PKG

IMPACT FEES.

THEY HELP PAY FOR ROADS, SCHOOLS AND PARKS IN LEE COUNTY.

EVERY TIME A NEW BUILDING GOES UP, DEVELOPERS PAY A FEE.

LAST YEAR COMMISSIONERS VOTED TO REDUCE THOSE FEES BY 80 PERCENT THOROUGH MARCH OF 20-15.

Roger Desjarlais/County Manager/10:42:53 "In 2012 this county had a 37 million dollar deficit in its budget in 2013 it was balanced and in 2014 this upcoming budget cycle there's likely to be a surplus." 10:43:07

COMMISSIONER'S HOPE REDUCING THE FEE WOULD IN TURN HELP THE ECONOMY.

OPPONENTS SAY THAT SIMPLY HASN'T HAPPENED.

Don Eslick -- acting chairman of lee public voice/00:01:27 "Lee counties growth has been a lot slower than the city of Bonita Spings and Collier COunty neither of whom reduced there impact fees." 00:01:38

DON ESLICK RUNS A LOCAL WATCH DOG GROUP --LEE PUBLIC VOICE.

HE SAYS THESE CUTS ARE COSTING THE COUNTY MILLIONS.

Don Eslick -- acting chairman of lee public voice/00:02:20 "We estimate that for the full 24 months of the moritorium, 80 percent reduction that the total loss would be about 40 million dollars." 00:02:32

Roger Desjarlais/County Manager/10:42:18 " I don't know how to respond to the 40 million dollar number that's out there, because it's based on a set of assumptions that I think are just flawed." 10:42:25

COUNTY MANAGER ROGER DESJARLAIS SAYS IT'S NOT A LOSS.

IT'S MONEY THAT'S NOT NEEDED.

Roger Desjarlais/County Manager/10:40:39 "If we continued to collect fees without projects to spend them on we'd have to refund them at the end of 7 years anyway. So it just doesn't make sense." 10:40:48

ESLICK SAYS THERE IS PLENTY TO BE DONE, AND THEY ARE FIGHTING TO BRING THE FEE BACK TO 100 PERCENT.

Don Eslick -- acting chairman of lee public voice/00:03:31 " That's a lousy way to run a government. To say that you don't need new infrastructure as you continue to grow I can't imagine a worse fallacy in your planning." 00:03:50

THE FEE COULD GO BACK TO 100 PERCENT IN MARCH OF 2015.

COMMISSIONERS WILL VOTE BEFORE THEN IF THEY WANT TO KEEP IT REDUCED.

LANDMARK CONDO CASE-PLASMA

DEVELOPING THIS MORNING --

A FLORIDA JUDGE IN TAMPA WILL SOON HEAR A LANDMARK CASE THAT COULD COST CONDO OWNERS BIG MONEY.

AT ISSUE, A NEW LAW --

INVESTORS CAN TAKE OVER A CONDO COMPLEX AND FORCE OWNERS TO SELL IT AS A LOSS.

A RULING COULD SEND SHOCK WAVES THROUGH THE REAL ESTATE MARKET.

NCB2'S KELLIE BURNS HAS THE DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

LANDMARK CONDO CASE-trxPKG

stephanie krasowski, condo owner:10-:14

s/ jackie schafer, condo owner:50-:54

THESE FLORIDA CONDO OWNERS ARE CURRENT ON THEIR MORTGAGES, CURRENT ON THEIR CONDO FEES. BUT THEY COULD STILL LOSE THEIR HOMES.

"I never ever contemplated that someone could come in and just take it from me."

STEPHANIE KRASOWSKI BOUGHT HER CONDO AT JUST THE WRONG MOMENT, WHEN FLORIDA HOME PRICES WERE ABOUT TO COME CRASHING DOWN.

SHE PUT 20% DOWN ON A 163-THOUSAND DOLLAR UNIT. NOW SHE CLAIMS INVESTORS ARE FORCING HER TO SELL FOR JUST 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS AS THEY CONVERT THIS CONDO COMPLEX INTO RENTAL APARTMENTS.

"The termination process that's going on here is just for the financial gain of the bulk buyer."

THAT'S WHY JACKIE AND THE REMAINING OWNERS ARE SUING. MOST OF THEM BOUGHT AT THE HEIGHT OF THE BOOM, JUST BEFORE MANY HOMES IN FLORIDA LOST HALF THEIR VALUES. MANY OF THE OWNERS ARE UNDERWATER ON THEIR MORTGAGES.

"Yeah, I made a terrible financial decision to buy in at the time that I did, but I did it, and I'm a big girl and I've dealt with that. I've continued to pay my bills."

AT ISSUE IS A NEW FLORIDA LAW THAT SAYS IF 80% OF OWNERS AGREE TO TERMINATE THE CONDO, THE OTHERS CAN BE FORCED TO SELL. THE LAW ADDS THAT IF 10% OPPOSE, THEY CAN BLOCK THE SALE. BUT THE INVESTORS IN THIS CASE, WHO OWN 80% OF THE UNITS, SAY THE BYLAWS OF THE CONDO OVERRIDE THAT.

"They don't care. To them it's business, to us it's. it's everything." Return to index of stories...

GOOD MORNING-2SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING --

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

AND I'M JIM SPIEWAK.

WE SAW SOME STORMS OVERNIGHT --

LET'S CHECK IN WITH NBC2'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING --

HE'S TRACKING YOUR WEEKEND FORECAST.

LIFE ON THE WATER FOR KIM AND ED ROBINSON IS SIMPLE.

"It's lovely you make your own rules, you what you want when you want, if you get bored with the scenery, you take your house and you go somewhere else."

BUT NOT BEFORE DISPOSING OF ANY ONBOARD SEWAGE, ROBINSON SAYS THEY DON'T NEED THE EXTRA WEIGHT.

"Because you travel with your waste. We're trying to be eco friendly, we're trying to keep the waters of Charlotte County clean inhabitable and you do your best for the environment."

SOME PEOPLE IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY AREN'T AS MINDFUL.

AND THAT HAS THE MARINE ADVISORY COMMITTEE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO

IT'S ILLEGAL AND BOATERS ARE UPSET ABOUT IT.

"I'ts polluting yes, I'm an avid boater, fisherman, I swim out here in these waters so obviously I want them clean."

COMMITTEE MEMBERS SUGGESTED EXPANDING THE NUMBER OF STOPS THE COUNTY PUMP OUT BOAT MAKES, TO INCLUDE LEMON BAY AND CHADWICK COVE.

THE IDEA ALREADY HAS THE SUPPORT OF CHARLOTTE COUNTY COMMISSIONER STEPHEN R DEUTHSCH.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY ACQUIRED ITS FIRST PUMP OUT BOAT IN NOVEMBER IN RESPONSE TO A NEWLY INSTALLED MOORING STATION.

BOATERS LIKE ROBINSON SAY THE PUMP OUT BOAT PROVIDES A VITAL SERVICE NO ONE SHOULD TURN DOWN.

"Why say no? it's free to the citizens, it's free to the boaters, it's something that's becoming more and more needed as more people come to the area."

THE BOAT CAPACITY IS 420 GALLONS.

IT MAKES 2 TRIPS A WEEK THROUGHOUT CHARLOTTE COUNTY.

HEAXT SAYS IN FUEL AND LABOR THE EXTRA TRIPS SHOULD COST AROUND 100 DOLLARS EACH. IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY CG NBC2 Return to index of stories...

GATOR FEED REACTION-OC NATSVO OC

IT'S THE VIDEO EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT --

A SOUTH LOUISIANA TOUR GUIDE, FEEDING ALLIGATORS.

oooh!. laughing

LOUISIANA AUTHORITIES HAVE ORDERED ALL SWAMP BOAT TOUR OPERATORS TO STOP FEEDING GATORS.

IF YOU RECALL - 2 YEARS AGO - WE HAD OUR OWN GATOR FEEDING INCIDENT.

NBC2'S HEATHER TURCO TALKED WITH THE EXPERTS ABOUT WHY THIS HAS TO STOP. Return to index of stories...

GATOR FEED REACTION-PKG

THIS IS THE MOST RECENT VIDEO, THAT HAS SO MANY PEOPLE REACTING.

WHILE EXCITING TO WATCH - THIS STUNT IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS.

A LOUISIANA TOUR GUIDE IS CAUGHT ON CAMERA FEEDING CHICKEN TO 2 GATORS, THEN JUMPS IN THE WATER WITH THEM - AND PLACES MARSHMALLOWS IN HIS MOUTH - FOR THE GATORS TO GRAB.

A LOCAL NATURE EXPERT IS APPALLED.

TC

15:04-15:13

All it takes is for a child to be walking by with a bag of marshmallows and then these gators can approach in a dangerous way.

NOW THERE'S NO LAW IN LOUISIANA PROHIBITING LURING AND FEEDING OF ALLIGATORS, BUT IT'S AGAINST LOCAL LAW IN JEFFERSON PARISH - WHERE THESE IMAGES WERE CAPTURED.

AND IT *IS AGAINST THE LAW HERE IN FLORIDA -

BUT THAT DIDN'T STOP EVERGLADES AIRBOAT CAPTAIN, WALLACE WEATHER HOLT FROM ENTICING GATORS,.

TC

14:21-14:26

when gators are fed they become increasingly bold and they will approach humans.

REMEMBER THIS SCENE FROM 2 YEARS AGO?

THESE PICTURES WERE TAKEN BY A VISITOR.

CAPTAIN WALLY, AS HE IS KNOWN, EVENTUALLY LOST HIS HAND, WHEN THE GATOR CHOMPED DOWN.

TIM MARTELL, OWNER OF MANATEE GUIDES NATURE KAYAK TOURS -

TC

14:31-14:43

those gators are eventually going to get larger and they are still going to be interested in obtaining food that is easy to get and they will approach humans and that means a potential disaster.

SO WHILE IT LOOKS LIKE THE GATORS ARE TAME AND THE SITUATION IS UNDER CONTROL - TIM EXPLAINS, NOTHING CAN BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.
