FIRST WEATHER-WX CNTR

Rob Duns

Despite a cool start to the day with a fair amount of clouds, we'll be expecting another round of seabreeze induced showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Through mid-day on Monday, the region will stay quiet weather-wise. Temps will be approaching 90 degrees around lunchtime, and most of Southwest Florida will end up topping out in the low to mid 90s through the afternoon.

Isolated storms will start to pop by the mid afternoon, and these storms will keep building and expanding through the late afternoon and into the evening. Now that our winds have become more easterly, the sea breeze won't be able to work as far inland, which will keep the highest rain chances closer to the coast and along the urban corridor. The prime time for rain for most of us will be from 3-6 p.m.

After the rain fades close to sunset, expect partial clearing with lows dropping into the low to mid 70s through the overnight period.

We'll rinse and repeat this forecast Tuesday with the highest rain chances again staying along to the urban corridor. Return to index of stories...

MORE THAN 100-THOUSAND PEOPLE HERE HAVE SETTLED INTO A HARSHER REALITY… BECOMING ALMOST NUMB TO THEIR PRECARIOUS CONDITIONS.

//

IT'S A REALITY THAT PASTOR ANTONIO COSTA FINDS DIFFICULT TO ACCEPT.

FOR YEARS, HE'S BEEN FIGHTING FOR THEIR CAUSE.

RECENTLY, HIS CRIES HAVE GROWN LOUDER AS BRAZIL THROWS MORE MONEY TO HOSTING THE WORLD CUP.

EARLY THIS YEAR HE HAS TRAVELED TO ZURICH TO PROTEST AT THE GATES OF FIFA'S HEADQUARTERS DEMANDING BETTER CONDITIONS FOR THE PEOPLE OF JACAREZINHO.

"Seeing my country from this place, shocks me because we are the seventh economy in the world but at the same time we permit people to live in these conditions without switch systems, children without a good education, people dying in hospitals, a place where people are invisible. People don't have an identity. People cry and no one listens."

IT'S EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE PEOPLE OF JACAREZINHO FEEL SO HARD DONE BY AND WHY THEY ARE SO APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE WORLD CUP. MANY TELL ME THAT THE MONEY THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE WORLD CUP AND THE GAINS THAT MAY COME FROM IT, WON'T GO TO THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED IT: THE PEOPLE HERE IN ONE OF THE POOREST SLUMS IN LATIN AMERICA.

SHAWN KINMARTIN IS A PILOT FOR FLY FREE SKYDIVING IN FESTUS.

HE WAS ON HIS FOURTH SKYDIVING RUN OF THE DAY AT 11 THOUSAND 500 FEET WHEN THE TROUBLE BEGAN.

"The two skydivers jumped out they were the last two I had in my airplane. The last skydiver on his way out struck the elevator of the aircraft."

THAT'S THE PART OF THE TAIL THAT CONTROLS THE AIRCRAFT'S CLIMB AND DESCENT.

FOR THE NEXT TEN MINUTES KINMARTIN FOUGHT TO CONTROL THE CESSNA 182 AS HE HEADED BACK TO THE FESTUS AIRPORT.

WHEN HE REALIZED HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LAND THE PLANE, HE DECIDED TO BAIL AND HEADED BACK TO THE FARM FIELDS.

HE WAS ALREADY WEARING A PARACHUTE-- A COMPANY RULE.

"When I jumped out of the airplane, it was at 2,000 feet -- so I only had 1,500 feet to the ground. And when I jumped out, the plane spiraled and crashed into the field over there. The wind carried me and I landed on this soybean field over here."

HE'S ONLY 21 YEARS OLD, STILL LEARNING THE ROPES. AND COLLEAGUES GIVE HIM A THUMBS UP FOR KEEPING HIS COOL.

"I am a flight simulation student at SIU, and we practice different emergency situations."

BY THE WAY, THIS WAS KINMARTIN'S FIRST SKYDIVE AND HE'S JUST GLAD IT WASN'T HIS LAST.

"After I jumped out of the plane, I knew it was going to land in a field and not actually hit a building or hurt anyone else, and my chute finally did deploy. that point, I finally had the rush of skydiving."

BUT HE ADMITS THE ENTIRE ORDEAL IS STILL SINKING IN.

"Open up the sausages and put them in there."

KATHE & TOM RAY THOUGHT THEY WERE ALMOST DONE RAISING CHILDREN JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

"Eat and go back to sleep. That's what you said."

THEIR SIX CHILDREN RANGE IN AGE FROM 13 TO 31.

"You don't know when you are being called to do something."

THEY ARE HEADING TO UKRAINE THIS WEEK TO ADOPT THREE TEENAGERS.KRISTINA, ANNA AND YURI.

THEY'VE BEEN DOWN THIS VERY EXPENSIVE, MENTALLY DRAINING ROAD BEFORE WITH VLAD.

KATHE LEARNED OF HIS STORY THROUGH AN EMAIL.

THE TEENAGER CAME TO THE U.S. WITH AN ORPHAN SHORT TERM HOSTING PROGRAM BUT HIS HOST FAMILY COULD NO LONGER CARE FOR HIM.

HE NEEDED A NEW FAMILY.

"I kind of went nah and it kind of bugged me for a few days. So I mentioned it to my husband and he said sure why not we have a couple of teenagers."

ONCE THEY GOT PAST THE LANGUAGE BARRIER THE RAYS LEARNED WHAT SO MANY ORPHANS IN UKRAINE GO THROUGH AND ADOPTED VLAD LAST YEAR.

"Sometimes hard because it is not how America is, easy."

ONCE THEY TURN 16. THEY'RE LEFT TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES WITH LITTLE EDUCATION."

"When we came back from Ukraine the last time I had nightmares for months."

NOW THIS FAMILY IS OPENING UP THEIR HEARTS AND HOME TO THREE ORPHANS WHO ARE CLOSED TO AGING OUT OF THE SYSTEM IN UKRAINE.

"I'm mom. They're going to have a great life, a great future." Return to index of stories...

IT IS FAST,

IT IS FIERCE,

AND FULL OF TWISTS,

AND TURNS,

AND KICKS.

WORLD-CLASS SOCCER FOR THOSE ON FOUR WHEELS.

"This is my eleventh year in power soccer."

18-YEAR OLD LEXI HEER OF FISHERS IS AMONG HUNDREDS OF PLAYERS WHO ARE PART OF THE U-S POWER SOCCER ASSOCIATION.

IT'S A FOUR-ON-FOUR GAME WITH AN OVERSIZED BALL AND TWO 20-MINUTE HALVES.

PLAYERS SPIN KICK THE BALL AT UP TO 40 MILES AN HOUR.

"It's here for those with severe disabilities that find themselves in a power chair who have no other outlet for sporting."

"We're a close family. And I love the competitive aspect of it, too."

Reporter Standup: Just as traditional soccer is the world's game, 'Power Soccer' is also an international sport. It was first developed in France back in the 70's, brought here to the U.S. in the 80's, and organizers say its recently really kicked into high gear."

TODAY, 18 TEAMS, 140 ATHLETES, AND ALL OF THEIR FANS.

ARE IN INDIANAPOLIS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO COMPETE FOR THIS YEAR'S CHAMPIONSHIP CUP.

BUT HERE IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT SOCCER.

"It's more than a sport."

IT IS PROOF, THEY SAY, THAT A DISABILITY DOES NOT HAVE TO DISABLE YOU.

"When players come to us, they're full of a life of 'No Johnny' or 'No Suzie, you're not going to be able to do that. We're not going to be able to do that. And actually the parents come somewhat skeptical that it's like 'soccer, you know, what's this about? That's probably not gonna happen.'"

"All of sudden, they're totally independent out on the court and it's all about them making decisions totally on their own out on the court."

"It releases them. They become free and be able to really discover who they are."

"I don't think about the disabilities that people have. You know, you look at the abilities that they do have and being able to still play. You know that's what I see." Return to index of stories...

THIS HOME RUN HIT BY COLORADO ROCKIES PLAYER TROY TULOWITZKI WAS NOT GOOD FOR THE GIANTS, BUT IT WAS GREAT FOR THIS GIANTS FAN.

WITHOUT SKIPPING A BEAT, YOU CAN SEE HIM CALMLY REACH UP AND CATCH THE BALL WHILE HOLDING A BABY IN HIS ARMS.

LETS WATCH THAT AGAIN IN SLOW MOTION.

HE REACHES UP, CATCHES THE HIGH FLY BALL, THEN QUIETLY WALKS BACK TO HIS SEAT.

"I was waiting, talking to Gary the usher and saw the ball got hit that way, then stepped up, reached up, caught it and went back to my seat."

ROB WINNER IS A SAN RAFAEL FIRE CAPTAIN.

IN HIS LAP IS THOMAS -- HIS ONE-YEAR-OLD SON.

"Winner was away from his seat for just a couple minutes. He was changing his son's diaper. The catch happened so fast, his wife didn't even see it happen."

"Someone told me. I didn't believe him. He comes back and hands me the ball, and I was like, "Oh. You did catch that."

THIS SPECTACULAR ONE-HANDED CATCH WITH A KID IN TOW IS THE SECOND ONE THIS WEEKEND AT AT&T PARK.

DURING SATURDAY'S MATCH UP, ANOTHER GIANTS FAN CAUGHT A FOUL-BALL WHILE HOLDING A CHILD IN ONE ARM.

ROB IS A HARD CORE GIANTS FAN AND HE'S GOT THE SEASON TICKETS TO PROVE IT, SO HE'S NOT VERY HAPPY THAT THE ROCKIES SWEPT HIS TEAM, THIS WEEKEND.

BUT IT IS FATHERS DAY, AND IN THAT SPIRIT, HE WAS HAPPY TO HELP ANOTHER NEW FATHER OUT.

"Tulowitzki. It's his first Fathers Day, so he wanted the ball back, so I gave him the ball and he gave me an autographed ball for him."

THE SIGNED BALL WILL BE ADDED TO THE FAMILY COLLECTION OF BASEBALL MEMORABILIA.

"I got a ball signed by Lefty Gomez when I was five. My dad got me.introduced me to him and got a ball signed. It's one of my fondest memories, so I hope this will be great memory for Thomas."

SURE, THE ROCKIES WON THIS GAME, BUT THIS GIANTS FAN STOLE THEIR THUNDER. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

!!!NEED WX ANCHOR CG!!!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

2:16 Some of the devices really track a lot of different metrics. I think that's really helpful because people can see you know, am I staying on track? Do I occasionally fall off the wagon or do I fall off the wagon on most days? So I think they really are good.
